Game recap: Giants 35 — Jets 24

Result: Boring first half, high-scoring second half as backup Ryan Nassib throws three touchdown passes to lead Giants.

Need to Know: Geno Smith was officially named the Week 1 starting QB by Rex Ryan after a solid first-half performance. He was 9 of 14 for 137 yards with 1 TD as the Jets took a 10-7 halftime lead. He also ran three times for 17 yards. . .Mike Vick had a short, eventful night on the Jets’ first two second-half series. He fumbled on the first to set up a Giants touchdown; on the second he led an 11-play, 76-yard touchdown drive, finishing with a 3-yard TD pass to Eric Decker. He was 4-for-5 for 35 yards with 1 TD. Third-stringer Matt Simms was 9-for-14 for 106 yards and a touchdown. . . The Jets kept most of their starters in to start the second half; the Giants did not. . .Cornerback Antonio Allen sustained a concussion and left the game. Allen left after a helmet-to-helmet collision with Jets linebacker Demario Davis while making a tackle. Backup linebacker Troy Davis also left with a leg injury. . .The Jets had 393 yards of total offense. . . The seven TDs were most scored by Jets, Giants combined in their 46 preseason games dating to 1969.

Game Balls: Running backs Chris Johnson (9 carries, 42 yards; 2 receptions, 35 yards) and Chris Ivory (6-50 rushing, 1-23 receiving).

What’s Next: The Jets wrap up their preseason schedule next Thursday at Philadelphia (7 p.m.). Ten days later, they open the regular season against Oakland at MetLife Stadium Sunday Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Hats off to Marty Mornhinweg for drawing up a great gameplan which allowed Geno to use many of the pieces of the Jets offense effectively during the game.  The running game looked in midseason form and Geno Smith looked calm and effective in the pocket with accurate passes.

Granted, the Giants first team defense looks like it could struggle this season, but Smith finished the preseason 23-of-33 for 268 yards (8.12 YPA), one touchdown and one interception with another touchdown on the ground.  Expect the Jets to use Geno’s solid play from the Friday night game against the Giants as the pretense to naming him a starter.

I don't care what PFF stats and other stat-friendly sites say, my eyes continue to tell me that Kyle Wilson is terrible.

I hope once the regular season arrives and we have Milliner back, it'll be him and Walls as starters, with Lankster or Patterson handling the slot and Wilson nowhere near the field on 3rd downs.

Rex will be glued to the cuts looking for a potential CB?!

Ironically, this game was the exact opposite of the first two.

Our 1st team O and D outplayed the other teams 1st team O and D but our scrubs got beat bad...

Glad we lost, don't want to go 4-0....not a good track record the last few years for teams undefeated in the preseason though I wish we would have beaten the Giants...

Geno was solid, which is a huge improvement over last year at this time...

Johnson made a few plays as well as Amaro...

Decker dropped a couple but that happens to the best WR's now and then...

None of the secondary WR's distinguished themselves, no clue what the team will do there...

Hakim made some nice ST plays and Reilly flashed again...

Hope Allen and Davis are not hurt too bad...

What happened with the officiating in the second half? In the beginning of the game, they were very fair, but once half time hit every single call started going against the Jets. Did they replace the refs with backups too, or what?

I am getting tired of the qualifying of everything the Jets do good. Geno played well against the first team giants defense but Bassett has put in that the Giants defense does not look good, I thought the Giants were suppose to have a great secondary with the signing of DRC. So stop being so critical of everything.

@r_in_ct I hate Wilson. It's like every play he's involved in at CB is a Def PI flag. He plays much much better as a only nickel, but with were the injuries are now, he's forced into the CB role and it sucks. Just like it did when Cromartie went down and he played there for a few weeks @_@ He's terrible at man-to-man coverage but is above average at nickel.

I've been beating this drum for awhile now. I think he's our weakest link on D. He may be passable because if how tough that position is to play but if I'm an O-coordinator, I go after him on every play.

@a57se Spot on as usual. The one's did look pretty good and Geno has had a really good pre-season appears to be on his way to becoming a productive NFL QB. The o-line in spite of mike Westhoff's comments,is still a concern because Brian winters continues to struggle and I would not be surprised if at some point this season he is replaced by Dakota Dozier who has looked a lot better at a comparative stage in his development than Winters ever did. The corner position continues to be a problem and i have to agree with e in ct & baytor that Wilson is awful period!

@__fense I noticed that too but I'm sure the Giants fans were thinking the same thing in the first half. Unfortunately, with Brian Winters in the game it was only a matter of time before the penalty flags would fly against us as he continues to suck!

@a57se Why are you still such a miserable pr1k .. Geno looked good, our O looked really good as a whole. Our front 7 played lights out. Our secondary is going to improve. IDGI. SHUT UP AND BE HAPPY Are you not a fan?

@JCuratola3 @a57se Our front 7 played great? really? did you not see #23 run through us like swiss cheese? Yes we stopped him cold on several plays but the giants ran well against our front 7 over all and if that continues we might be in trouble!

@JCuratola3 @a57se No, he just likes to fashion himself the super smart, and sophisticated fan, so he always has to find something to be salty about. He's the biggest loser who comments on this blog.

@jaym

he was being sarcastic about people saying we dominated the first half. It was full of snark and ill will.

@cunny @JCuratola3 @a57se So any body who doesn't think every thing the jets do is great is a loser or a miserable prick? Get real dude!

Like it or not he makes a lot of great points and brings a different perspective to this blog. It's guys like you who choose to drink the kool-aid and jump on the band wagon when things go well. but then boo the team when they don't that drive me crazy!
