NFL: New York Jets at Cincinnati Bengals

Gamethread: Jets at Bengals, 7 p.m.

Game: The Jets and Bengals play their second preseason in Cincy on Saturday night.

Time: The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and air on CBS. The game will re-air on SNY at 11 p.m.

Injuries: Saunders, Patterson, Milliner, Ivory, McDougle, Zusevics, Evans, Cumberland and Decker will all not dress.

What To Watch: Check the wide receivers and running back depth, as both positions are dealing with significant bang-ups and injuries.

Calvin Pryor will make his pro debut on Saturday after a concussion kept him out of the first preseason game. Antonio Allen will also see time at cornerback, with Dexter McDougle out for the year and Dee Milliner out with a high-ankle sprain.

Geno Smith is expected to play most — if not all — of the first half with the first team.

Was anyone else puzzled by MM NOT putting CJ in as his third down back?   He used him mostly on 1st and 2nd down, and took him out on most 3rd downs?   I expected the opposite because of CJ's ability as a receiver.

I think that rex finally realized that Lanskter is starting material. They have enough talent on ST that they can afford to start Lankster. Hopefully milliner comes back in time forthw start of the season. I wouldn't rush him back for week 1 since the raiders have a weak receiving core. Walls and Lankster should start against the giants this week.

My favorite play of the game was Big Snacks run stuff. Dude is just dominant.

Watching Pryor is fun. He reminds me of Polamalu with the way he flashes across your screen.

Big positive is that Pryor looks like the real deal.   First string D got torched early-on, and it wasn't just the secondary.  Think we've seen last of AA at CB.    The OL was out of control with the penalties, and no receiver or returner is really separating themselves from the pack from what I've seen.

Like the fact that the Jet second & third stringers are outplaying their counterparts on the opposition --- could translate to Rex being right about the depth of this team --- but that might not bode well for the quality of a lot of his starters---especially the secondary and receivers.

A couple of things I know for sure; Antonio Allen can't cover AJ Green, our secondary looks like a JV team, if we can't cover guys we won't sack QB's, our O-Line will be good, Chris Johnson has something left in the tank, I'm keeping Salas, David Harris is the slowest LB in the league...to be continued

Wow the Giants have 27 fourth quarter points and are now winning!

Wonder if "yeah, but their starters sucked" will also be the narrative for them.

The one and only positive I saw in this game was Calvin Pryor.

@hazard2012

I get the feeling the Jets don't want to show their best stuff in pre-season.

@williamg1 That was great. He basically said "ENOUGH ALREADY" and single-handedly blew that play up.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 And we got a great example of his pinpoint big hitting with that pass break up he had. Timed it perfectly, went low so he didn't draw any flag and just sent that receiver spiraling to the ground.

@williamg1

True.  He's all over the place, with bad intent.   This is clearly what Rex and Idzik saw in him.

@williamg1 I don't know why, but I feel like he had a seizure or something while driving.

No bent they are the giants. Carl Banks will go on the fan and say how big of a win this was and that they are a playoff team. He singlehandedly makes the midday show on the fan unbearable to listen to.

Not showing your whole hand is one thing, not having one is another.  Since it's not something they've done often or well to date a little real-game practice might not be a bad idea.

@Tequila Joe Suck is being kind. Eli is making Sanchez's 2012 play look like a work of art.

I'm guessing that if Ivory had played, CJ would probably see less 1st and 2nd down snaps, and more 3rd down snaps.

@rstysanchz @hazard2012 @williamg1 First NFL action and he hit a guy so hard he broke up a pass, knocked a runner down in the backfield and shook him up and deflected a pass.

He is a playmaking safety and that is a rare thing.

Haha I hope he plays like Sanchez did in 2012. Nothing makes me feel better than the giants sucking.

@Brendan @Tequila Joe

Coughlin should have been canned but I'd be sur[rised if he survives another year.

Changing the offense so radically may end up costing them big time.

Brendan
Brendan

@Tequila Joe They were still doing a good job run blocking against the first unit.

And let's keep in mind that the Bengals were one of the best run defenses in the league last year. So in a real game that'd be the type of game where you chip away at them in hopes that the dam eventually breaks.

Brendan
Brendan

@Kyle Suta Well, he was basically there last year, it looks like he's going for the gold this season.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se You know it's bad when Giants fans are talking nostalgic about the Kevin Gilbride offense.

Brendan
Brendan

@Tequila Joe Fair point, but I think it was early enough where the Jets, in a real game situation, would've stayed true to the gameplan in hopes the defense sorted it out. But you're right, it's very possible they'd have just abandoned it if the game kept going the way it was going.

Brendan
Brendan

@Tequila Joe Eh, Kyle Wilson looked horrible. AA looked solid, Lankster looked good and the safeties were okay.

Hopefully Dee and Patterson coming back healthy will be what the unit needs to stabilize.

@Brendan @Tequila Joe

So when your projected starting CB's and first backup CB go down with injuries,  that's bad right.

On the other hand,  all of the second string (including AA) CB's got some valuable playing time which has got to help during the season.

williamg1
williamg1

I think the whole defensive backfield (except Lankster) looked bad.

Brendan
Brendan

@bklyndude Agreed. It wasn't even the replacement CB's that were the issue tonight.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 I assume you're just talking first unit? AA definitely didn't look bad. Landry was okay, Jarrett looked like he screwed up some coverages and Wilson was just....yikes.

williamg1
williamg1

@Brendan @williamg1 AA sure got burnt on that target.

Rex said the TD Wilson gave up was a blown coverage by Landry.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@williamg1

I watched that play again.  Landry was looking to help  AA along the sideline as well as Kyle Wilson in the slot with deep coverage.  I think he was keeping an eye on AA's guy more than Wilson's guy resulting in getting over late.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 Did he, though? He was step-for-step with AJ and AJ snuck in a little push-off, a move AA probably hasn't seen much of. That's one of the things that makes AJ special, so he basically saw an elite receivers trick. If he's a good player, he commits it to memory and learns from it.

But it wasn't like Wilson's TD, which was truly getting burnt.

At this point, I'd rather AA be the slot corner than Wilson.

Brendan
Brendan

@bklyndude That'd make sense, it did seem like there was a canyon in the deep middle 1/3.

williamg1
williamg1

@Brendan @williamg1 Rex said the Wilson TD was supposed to be a double team with Landry. If that's the case, I'm not putting that on Wilson.

Brendan
Brendan

@williamg1 He still got torched off the line, but if he was expecting help over the top maybe he would've got a better jam on at the line. But still, it was like a track meet sprint for Sanu.
