Their Previous Meeting: The last time these two teams met, Rex Ryan had believed the Jets had been “mathematically eliminated” from playoff contention in what was view upon as a must-win game. The Jets hosted the Falcons in one of their final home games at Giants Stadium; both teams boasted nearly identical records. Mark Sanchez was a week removed from sitting out with a sprained PCL against the Buccaneers and returned sporting braces on both knees that were quite a hinderence from the get-go. It was a low scoring affair with both teams struggling to score. The Falcons put their first points on the board with a 24 yard field goal in the first quarter however, the Jets responded as Sanchez connected with Braylon Edwards on a 65 yard touchdown pass to end the quarter. The Jets had plenty of chances to increase their lead however, a 19 yard Jay Feely field goal was aborted when holder Kellen Clemens botched the snap. A 38 yard attempt by Feely was wide as the teams headed into halftime and the Jets had another field goal attempt blocked with a little over 10 minutes left in the fourth. Neither team was able to score until Matt Ryan struck pay dirt, finding Tony Gonzalez for a 6 yard touchdown with 1:38 remaining in the game. Sanchez tried to put the team in position to score but he was picked off by Brent Grimes and Matt Ryan trotted out to kneel the ball twice; the Jets were downed 7-10.
