GEICO SportsNite: Jets’ “Green and White” Scrimmage

Defense dominated the day during the Jets’ annual “Green and White” scrimmage at training camp in Cortland. The team’s offense mustered just two field goals on the day thanks to a defense was strong in both coverage and communication, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

If Stephen Hill can stay healthy he will be a very productive receiver for us.  I commented last year that he's gotten a ton of criticism for a young player.  The perception that he drops passes is overblown and linked to one BIG drop in that game against the Patriots.  I'm at every home game and it was obvious that he was running on one leg last year. He may be the most important key to our season outside of Geno's development which may go hand in hand.  Decker, Hill and Kerley, along with Johnson out of the backfield, should provide Geno with a lot of quality options.  Can't wait for the first preseason game!

Two of the more interesting things Wischusen said during the broadcast of the scrimmage was that the coaches feel David Harris is having his best camp ever and they also feel that Jaiquawn Jarrett was outplaying every other safety in camp.

Had they said these things publicly before yesterday?

The intra squad scrimmage will now determine how we play on offense for the year? Reading Rich at this time of the year is crazy. If we played well on offense than defense is terrible. If we play great on defense well they didnt play the Broncos. Cant win for losing when you are the Jets.

Let's not cut Greg Salas, is one thing I brought away from last nights scrimmage. I know he had one dropped ball, but made a few good receptions, and still seems like a tough competitor. Five WRs on our 53 man roster is smart.

I didn't hear one comment on Zach Sudfeld last night, which is frustrating. Anyone have a clue as to how well he performed??

Still concerned about our O line... no mention of Winters last night, and there was a play where the left side of our line caved... I'm afraid there are still more questions in my mind than answers.

Can't wait for Thursdays game against the Colts, I will be glued to the screen.

The offense needs to get going  and they need  to hurry up and get that pass protection issues fixed and get on the same page in a hurry.. There gonna have to put up some points now. Early schedule for the Jets they have Greenbay,Chicago, Detroit, Denver,New England. these teams also have good defenses in addition to that these offenses are to bad either. Just saying. The good thing is the defense of the Jets can keep them in any game. Im Hoping they wont on the feild to long. All wew need is the offense to put it together and be ready come Sept.

These intra-squad scrimmages cannot make anyone happy.  One unit shines means the other is deficient.  We then shift our concerns to the latter.

The best assessment is a scrimmage with another team which is coming up.

@Bent Oh right on! Jaiquawn is a rising star apparently... FEELS GREAT!!!

levi

@Bent Does that mean Jarrett is playing better than Allen and Landry too or the back ups?

@Bent I didnt get to listen. I hope you guys have more articles about it today.

@harold  Cimini is a miserable reporter.  He harps on the negative at all times and then pretends to attribute his comments to the way that Jets fans feel.  I would take any other reporter over that guy.

@bob One thing to bear in mind about these scrimmages is that seven sacks might sound bad but all of those plays were blown dead when the rusher was in the QB's face.  In live action, Geno or Vick might be able to escape some of those or throw the ball away as they're being hit.

@UncleJoesJetFarm ...or Salas should have reigned that ball in lol!!

Kyle Wilson had two penalties... deja vu? (smh)

I took only positives. This is a Rex Ryan team, the defense should be tough for anyone. We need to know how good the offense is, which is hard against the D.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan I bet they'd love to trade some of these surplus depth guys so maybe talking them up is a ploy.

@kniff @Bent Seemed like Miles outplayed him in the scrimmage although Jarrett did make a play or two.

@levi @Bent I can't say because I didn't hear the quote but the way it was relayed, they said "nobody is having a better camp than Jarrett".

@levi @Bent

I know she's happy cause they went to Jarrett.

@levi @Bent I'm sure there will be plenty of reaction.  Here are some interesting things I got from what I've heard that haven't already been mentioned:

- Milliner had one pass breakup and one tackle per Marty Lyons.  I don't think he gave up a catch other than the Decker short grab for five which is in the above video and it looks like they were in zone anyway.

-  Dozier struggled to handle Kenrick Ellis which can be good and bad news.  He drove him back on consecutive plays.

- I don't know if the 3rd tackle is currently on the roster.  Zusevics seems to be behind Ijalana and Qvale.

- Jeremiah George, Brandon Dixon and IK+ are all stuck on the third unit.

- Reilly and Saunders seemed to be the only draft picks that did anything positive.

- Doesn't look like they changed anyone round on the OL when the left handed Vick was in the game

- Among guys surprisingly getting first team reps were Lankster and Miles.

- Jermaine Cunningham's ankle injury seems pretty serious.  A few other guys were dinged but nothing major.

- Four penalties on the secondary including two on Wilson.

Most of this is going by what they said on the radio, but some mined from twitter.

I think Winters is comming along. They say he's very strong and tallented however he needs to stop trying to play like he's in a street brawl out there and relying on his strength and talent so much to get it done and work  more on being a technicion. Winters still has a lot of work yet to do i guess.

@kniff @UncleJoesJetFarm Did you know that, having melted down in week three, Wilson had zero penalties in the last 13 games?

Well if Rich says....

I have always been a fan of Lankster. Hopefully he gets more PT this year

@Bent   Lankster getting some first team reps. Nice.

@Bent @bob

At the very least I credit Vick for being honest enough to come out and say it. That the  pass protection up front needs work and the running backs need to pass ptotect better.

@Bent @kniff @UncleJoesJetFarm These stricter regs are going to be very tough on CBs and I'm sure will be plentiful...I hope they don't detract from the game experience, but feel they will somehow.

I will consider Wilson redeemed, by I've got my eye on em' cuz I know his ways lol!!

Bent
Bent moderator

@harold He at least deserves a shot.  Leaving him on the bench all year last year would have at least made some sense if he'd ever been tried out there and failed, but he's always held his own.

Bent
Bent moderator

@levi @Bent Obviously I don't know if Lankster was in there as a second starter.  He might have been the 4th CB in a spread v dime set for all I know.

Bent
Bent moderator

@levi @Bent Of course the media angle will be "Patterson was supposed to be their big money solution and he's been benched already"!

@Bent @bob

You can see Winters is a good Athlete in that picture nice picture Bent.

@bob @Bent Vick was mostly working with the 2's though.  He only had one drive with the 1's.

levi

@kniff  I cant remember the exact numbers but the last time the league decided to do this the PI calls jumped way up. Im not to happy about it. The D deserves to be able to play too.

And Stephen Hill beat him, which means according to bradysucks, Patterson should be cut immediately.

levi
levi

@Bent  Thats also good news he's in with the ones because it means they are more comfortable with the special Teams this year.

bob
bob

@Bent @bob

He worked with the 1st team a little. Wasn't that 20 yard run with the 1st team

kniff

@levi @kniff Penalties kill the momentum of the game for me, but rules are rules so I accept them... candy a$$ penalties just dull me out, and as they add up in frequency, pizz me off big time!

Bent
Bent moderator

@levi @Bent If what they were saying last year about being afraid to risk him on defense was true, that must be correct, yes.

Bent
Bent moderator

@bob @Bent Yeah, that was his best drive, so most of his complaints presumably were about the backups.

bob
bob

@Bent @bob Bent? thats a matter of opinion he didnt say 2nd team?

Bent
Bent moderator

@bob @Bent Yeah, I'm just guessing because he struggled when he was with the first team and did well with the starters.  For all I know, he might also be talking about mistakes the starters made with Geno in there.

bob

@Bent @bob

Not that the offensive line isnt good I think he thinks they can be good enuogh  though they just need to work on getting better..

Bent

@bob @Bent I agree.  I'm more worried about the tight ends in the running game.  I think we might be sub-par there.

@Bent @bob Great point gonna need those T.E 's got to thinking on the gold line stan probably missing bid Vladimere down there a little.

@bob @Bent Yeah I miss Valdamere Ducacus too!
