Geno Smith has left his agents at Select Sports, according to Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal.
Mullen notes that Smith must wait five days before hiring another agent.
Mike Garafolo of USA Today said that he has heard that Smith was unhappy with where he was taken in the draft.
And no, Smith will not be represented by newly-minted sports agent Jay-Z, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.comKnowing all the goings-on of agents is Liz Mullen’s area of expertise. After being told by everyone (as well as we can imagine, his own people) that he was the top overall quarterback, it’s not all that surprising that he would make a change. Smith hurt himself by not participating in the Senior Bowl and that might have been a decision that kept him from being a first-rounder in retrospect. Other than that it’s hard to imagine what his agents could have done differently … could they have been having backchannel conversations with teams about when he would be drafted to force a team to make a move in the first? Being considered by the Jets at 13 and then not getting drafted til the 39th pick has to have left the impression on Smith that he doesn’t want to continue on with the same representation.
