NFL: New York Jets at Miami Dolphins

Geno Smith surprises with offseason routine

Geno Smith spent his offseason like many football players do, preparing to come back better than before for the next one. Only Smith took it a step further, much to the surprise of his coaching staff, studying film to learn more about the people calling the plays against him (Daily News, August 14).

He began the study shortly after his lackluster rookie season ended, unbeknownst to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, quarterbacks coach David Lee or Rex Ryan.

“That’s smart as hell though,” Ryan said of Smith’s offseason tactics. “I never even knew about it.”

“He wants to be great,” Ryan said. “He just doesn’t want to be a guy that gets through. God touched the kid. He’s got so much ability. He can throw, he can run, he can do all that. But it’s that work ethic. As a quarterback, you almost have to be a gym rat. And he’s done it.”

For Smith, the extra work was just as enjoyable as it was helpful.

“I like watching film anyway,” Smith told The News. “It was one of those things where I didn’t have anything to do anyway, so I just wanted to kind of get ahead of stuff.”

He spent about three hours on each team, focusing on third downs, blitz packages and red-zone plays.

“On third-and-long, early in the game, does he like to blitz?” Smith said. “Does he like to lay off it? How does he do two-minute situations? So, I kind of got a feel for the game.”

Though Smith’s work is hardly over yet as he said he hasn’t completely finished the study yet – not until he’s actually faced the teams himself.

“I got to watch a lot of film based on what they do this year,” said Smith. “Yeah, I got those notes, but they’re useless at this point. But once you get a chance to play those teams in the regular season, I can go back to it and look at some of those tendencies I had written down.”

It is a great look at a quarterback who a year ago was slammed by some scathing reports – most notably by Nolan Nowrocki leading up to the 2013 NFL Draft.  It also aligns with Connor Orr’s piece last year shortly after Geno’s arrival.

Geno has been soaking the NFL game in for more than a year and has demonstrated not only a willingness to learn, but an aptitude.

While the focus right now is on the secondary, Geno’s ascension as a second year player could do a lot to quiet the concerns of many in New York.

Geno's development is, without doubt, the most important single factor that will decide the team's success this season. There are other matters that are very important--cornerback, especially--but if Geno can build on his late-season success from last year and actually become an upper-tier QB, then the team has a real shot at becoming something special. His work ethic and natural ability are very impressive--I'm rooting for him all the way.

I see some people on here view themselves a mathematicians. Geno watched 39 hours of film they say that is nothing. He watched the film and took notes. How much or how long he studied and then went out and practiced those things is exponentially more.

39 hours okay...

Geno is a real stand up guy.  He held his head high under the bright lights and pressure of Gotham.  His worst character moment was at the draft.  As a Jet he has been a real "mensch".

Sanchez spent his time doing camera shoots and dating hot chicks which I don't blame him about the hot chicks, but never really heard about him putting extra work till he was almost out the door

May 2013:

"[Geno's] biggest problem is that he doesn't know what he doesn't know," said a league executive, who spent extensive time assessing Smith before the draft. "I'm not sure he knows how to take instruction because he pretty much wouldn't listen or talk to our coaches … he's talented. He can sling it, he can fit it into tight spots, he can do a lot of things and I think he wants to be good. But you can't tell him anything right now. He's tuned out because he thinks he's got it all down."

@nyjets

Rookie WR Jalen Saunders was involved in a single-car accident this morning on the way to the Jets practice facility...Saunders was taken to the hospital & is being monitored as a precaution. He won't travel to CIN and is out for Saturday's game.

Boy oh boy I just wish we drafted that gym rat, film junkie that Cleveland stole this year. Why can't we have such dedicated football QB? All that sumbich #7 does is covort all over creation partying and carrying on. What a clown franchise we root for!

Is Geno a heck of a smart guy?  Absolutely. God has touched this man. Can he be better?  Definitely, no question.  Does Rex ask a heck of a lot of rhetorical questions, only to answer them with insanely definitive responses? There's no doubt.

Their no.2 WR will not play so we get a little bit of a break...the guy had a career game vs. us last season.

Ha...I knew there'd be a comment here from 57 criticizing Geno on a post about Geno doing voluntary study. You're so predictable.

@a57se @harold

Which I understand, but to act as though studying 39 hours means he only put forth 39 hours toward preparing for these opponents is lazy.

We criticize lazy writers.  I consider this lazy fandom.

He took notes and obviously he has used this in preparing for the upcoming season and will continue to use this information to ensure he prepares for these specific things once the season begins.

@UncleJoesJetFarm @marcus81  that was other professional people that said that, he might have been first in and last out during training but Sanchez was not known as spending the off season preparing except till the end

That is a factual comment about how many hours Geno spent doing this study.

Your interpretation of my posting a fact is just your interpretation...

"3 hours on each of the teams we play this season?" - by inserting the question mark it now becomes your opinion of something open to our interpretation. To me it sounds like you're marginalizing his initiative.

"That comes out to 39 hours..." - restatement of fact. Thanks for the math.

@a57se @Bytor @Disgruntled Jets Fan Considering the intelligent conversations most people have here, I think it's a good bet we have the capacity to do simple math. We may not remember diffy q's but we got addition.

You trash Geno all the time. So when you post something like the above, how should we take it, "Oh gee, there's 57 with another helpful fact. It's a good thing because I don't have my f'in calculator handy."

You can ask the intent of anything you want.

It would help if you indicated who you are asking...

@UncleJoesJetFarm

Sneaky, sneaky !! You should.ve been a politician or at least the HC of the Jets !!

LESS OBFUSCATING MORE EXPLICATING !!

The short answer, I feel, miss the playoffs and he MUST be fired...no arrows please, unless he decides to turn around and walk back...then he should catch a few !!!

He must win no less than 10, or eleven games in which case I don't see him missing the playoffs.....anything else is a failure !!
