Geno Smith will start Thursday vs. Colts

Geno Smith will start on Thursday against the Colts in the Jets’ first preseason game.

Rex Ryan made the QB announcement on Monday after practice.

Michael Vick, as the depth chart indicated, will be the No. 2 quarterback.

Tajh Boyd and Matt Simms are battling for the No. 3 quarterback position, if the Jets choose to carry three QBs on the roster.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

The Jets have repeatedly said that they want to let the QB battle “play out” but this is what everyone expected all along.

The Jets are giving Geno every chance to earn the starting role for the team at the beginning of the season as they should. He’s grown leaps and bounds since this time last year and his future playing has more upside than Vick offers.

As we’ve maintained all along, it comes down to ball security for Geno; if he can protect the football while moving the chains, then that’s all this Jets defense will require.

This is news? I thought this was expected.

Why are you all going on about a punter. Is it avoidance behavior. The fact is the Jets don't have a QB worth a damn.

Anything less than 100% completion rate and a TD to Hill (h/t bradysucks) on every drive is unacceptable!

Ryan Quigley is a horrible punter. Why is he still the starter? There are much better free agent punters out there. He wouldnt know a coffin corner punt if it dug itself out of a tomb and kicked him in the a$$.

The fact Matt Simms wasn't even considered, tells you just how unfair this competition is.

@tsjc68 WE HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO PUNTERS NOW THAT ONE IS IN THE HOF!!

@Floyd Toucanet He shanked one in the scrimmage.  I reckon Schum is on his tail.

Look out, there's Schum in the water!

@Floyd Toucanet I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you're not very fond of Ryan Quigley...

@williamg1 Poor Matt Simms. He never got a break in his life. He works so hard but no one gives him a chance. His father being Phil Simms never opened doors that would be otherwise closed for him.

Poor Matt Simms.  Never gets a chance.

@t__k  Let them keep Vick fresh & healthy.  Let Geno get more experience.  Then, before regular season game one, let everyone know that Vick is the starter.  Thus, keeping the lid on the quarterback controversy during the pre-season and making the correct move to give us the best chance at making the playoffs.  I would love to see what Vick can do with these weapons.

I, for one, am shocked. Truly shocked. I have no words. Except for one: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

That was a pretty ridiculous speech Ray Guy made during his interview at the HOF game. Based on what he was saying, he is the Martin Luther King Jr. of punters.

I want to cut Quigley and keep Schum, just so that every time he punts we can stand up and fire our imaginary machine guns out of our imaginary chopper windows screaming

GET SCHUM!  GET SCHUM!

@harvlis Vick has had better weapons when playing with the Eagles. The Jets receivers are not going to bring some super life changing performance out of Mike Vick.

I didn't get that...I thought he was self-deprecating but others are pushing that mantle upon him.

Offered without comment:

Quigley, 2013: 72 punts, 45.5 avg, 38.9 net, 21 in the red zone, 3 touchback, 19 fair caught, avg return 11.2 yards

Kluwe, 2012: 72 punts, 45.0 avg, 39.7 net, 18 in the red zone, 2 touchback, 12 fair caught, avg return 8.3

I'm a Kluwe fan, but I'm not sure he's actually an upgrade over Ryan Quigley.  He's a solid punter, but he's not elite or anything.

@Floyd Toucanet @harvlis  He is a seasoned veteran, mobile in the pocket, and has a gun for an arm.  I think he should start, if we want to make the playoffs.  Rex and Company are gone, if this team does not make a good showing.  Vick gives us the best chance to win.  Geno would be an experiment.  Why would Rex experiment with his job, when he has a proven commodity to rely on.  Watch how much better Vick is than Geno, in the pre-season games.  I just hope they don't get him killed, behind a makeshift O-line.

To me, he was an old man who wouldn't shut up and he felt like he'd accomplished some amazing feat by being the first punter and he's now opened the door for bigger and better things.

@juunit @a57se @__fense

He was relating what a group of 18 punters had told him...he said he was fine with being that if that is what they thought.

I didn't get that it was his notion about himself.

Based on the way he kept talking, even when the reporter was trying to pull the mic back and get another question in, I got a real sense of self importance from the guy.

I think he was just happy to get his 15 minutes.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan

If we keep him, he'd better not ever shank an important punt or the Post will be ALL OVER HIM.

"Pond Schum".
