Geno to start vs. Giants, still not named Week 1 starter

Geno Smith will start against the Giants in the Jets’ third preseason game of the year.

Geno has started each of the preseason games so far, but Rex Ryan still won’t officially name him the Week 1 starter.

“When we think it’s the right time, we’ll tell you,” Ryan said after practice on Tuesday.

Smith and the starters will play all of the first half and the first series of the third quarter, according to the head coach.

Jets just waived Evans...guess they're not too concerned about someone picking him up...

The kid is going to be good. He may not tear it up this year, but make no mistake he will eventually be a top 5 qb. He has crazy work ethic you can just tell. And he looks like a totally different qb out there.

He looks smart and now that he has a safety valve in cj to dumb off too, i have no doubt he will limit ints to under 15. Which is a major improvement.

He goes through his progressions and puts it on the money. He has missed 5 passes in 2 games. Thats pretty damn good if you ask me.

I predict he falls nicely into top 15. 3500 yds 15+ passing tis 3+ rushing 15-9ints  It wont be long until we have the best qb in our division thats how confident i am that this kid will be good.

Just comparing, but even in year 2 Sanchez was staring down receivers, throwing ducks, and had accuracy issues. You never heard sanchez speak so confident. You never heard sanchez say he expects to be top 5. All about hard work and confidence, and it seems like we have a confident work horse in Geno.

Im all in man, if Dee stays healthy once hes back and our DL plays ferocious damn can these Jets do some damage. Its a shame that some cant see how much talent is on this team. BTW Jace Amaro is going to be a STUD.

Don't blame Joey, don't blame the media and don't blame the refs. The Jets just won't be that good this year.

Geno will never be more than an average NFL QB. The Jets best chance to make the playoffs is to start Vick.

I would love to be wrong about Geno.

From one adult to another, you need to stop telling other men that you are "fully boned".

@Pat d Darn it, well there goes my hope now, who wants my season tickets selling them half price, let's just end the season now, lol, damn pat with fans like you who needs pundits or cimini and espn in particular? lol, I bet Rex finds a way to get 9 wins out of the talent we got now and make the playoffs, and if we make the playoffs watchout, the Jets aren't a team you would want to play in December because we got what it takes to go far, a bruising rushing attack and a relentless defense.

What is "not that good" in your definition? How many wins? And I do not believe most Jet fans are expecting a SB run this year. They started rebuilding last year, so 3 years would seem reasonable to most of us to get back to contender status. Personally I'm looking for Geno to take the next step, the D line to be even better than last year, hoping to see Hill start to make a good contribution, our young o lineman to step up, Demario Davis to be a leader on defense, and find out which of our draft picks could become solid contributors in the future. Should be a fun and very exciting season.

I have been a fan well over 25 years.  I still think we will win every game.

Time doesn't do that to you.

You do it to yourself.

@UncleJoesJetFarm Nobody cares about your evolution as a Jet fan and where your psyche is right now. We DO care that you pollute this blog with unnecessary tweets from that nimrod Cimini.

Want to give me some FACTS or statistic that would suggest his ceiling is only avg?

4 to 6 wins.

I don't think Geno is the answer and the offense will most likely struggle again. I see no reason to beleive that Hill will be improved. The defensive front 7 is the strength of the team but they still seem to lack an elite outside pass rusher. Which leaves the CBs vulnerable.

Management, coaches and the players.

In that order.

@harold

I still think we'll win every game we play as well...I actually had Sanchez (and a few other Jets) on my fantasy team for three years! Now that is drinking the Koolaid!

@JCuratola3 I don't understand how people can make such blanket statements after a guy has played 16 games.

Thanks. I find it somewhat irritating when someone like Pat d posts that "the Jets will not be good" as if the rest of us are blind and we don't have our own minds and our own reasons for following the team. He thinks they will win 4-6 games. Could happen. I personally think 7 is the lowest amount of wins and could go as high as 10. But in any case I am looking forward to the season and see the story lines develop and to see the team improve week to week. We will know at the end of the season if the Jets were any good. Right now I'm just looking forward to see what they can do against the Giants Friday night.

@Pat d I don't see just 4 wins.

Granted the Jets have a harder schedule and were -94 points against vs for, but they have some pluses:

1 - drafted Calvin Pryor

2 - Dee Milliner should be quite a lot better.   Consider how bad he was for most of last year and how much better he will be if he's just average.

3 - Geno Smith.  If he improves from terrible early on, to just mediocre, thats got to be a win or two over the course of the year.

4 - Eric Decker - he's way better than what they had last year, even if he's not great

5 - Vick is the backup.  If Geno bombs Vick can win games.

I predict the Jets will go 7-9, with 6-10 or 8-8 possible.

@Pat d The Jets had 8 wins last year (with a Geno being a rookie).

Even if you don't believe in Geno, are you saying he won't eclipse his play from last year? And you think they'll have less wins, even as the roster has seen some upgrades?

@a57se @harold Even Sanchez??  Would have killed my fantasy team when I played!!  My first Jet game was first Sunday in October 1967 against the "expansion" Miami Dolphins.  Namath (who?) went for 300 and 3 TDs and the hook has been in my gill ever since....I know what you mean about expecting to win every game..

@a57se @harold Now we know why you're so distrustful of Geno. You were scarred by Marky in a pay FF league...:) I try to avoid drafting Jets if I can help it.

@UncleJoesJetFarm And I watch Fox News sometimes. Doesn't mean that I believe a word. I like to hear what everyone is saying.

You seem to believe every bit of trash that RC spouts. C'mon, the dude can't grasp the salary cap and how our rookies will all fit. He's a flippin' football reporter!

And he wears mom jeans and white cross-trainers and is a middle-aged man that lives in his parent's basement.

@Pete 57 Good post.  Lets wait and see what the coaches come up with.  The roster is definitely improved compared to last year.  We have excellent DC and OC.  I trust them more than I do the hack reporters that cover this team.

@Bytor @a57se @harold

Actually I won two of those years in a NON-PAY (or FREE) fantasy league. I don't gamble...

i do the Fox, CBS and ESPN free fantasy leagues...1 team in each and I'll be drafting this weekend.

Not gonna be drafting many Jets this year.
