Goodson not at OTAs, court hearing rescheduled

Mike Goodson is not at Jets OTAs on Wednesday, and his next court hearing that was scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed (Walder, June 11).

Goodson hasn’t participated in OTAs yet this offseason.

“In this camp, it’s voluntary,” Rex Ryan said recently (TJB, June 4). “He hasn’t been here. He volunteered not to be here. And I’ll volunteer to not answer the question.”

He was previously offered a plea deal of a three-year prison sentence, which he would have to serve one year before being eligible for parole, the report said. Goodson rejected the offer.

Goodson and the driver of the car, Garant Evans, were indicted as co-defendants on second degree unlawful possession of a weapon — for the loaded gun locked in the glove compartment of the car — and fourth degree prohibited weapons and devices — for the hollow-point bullet (TJB, November 7).

He played in just two games for the Jets after serving a suspension under the league’s substance abuse policy, then tearing both his ACL and MCL in October.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

The Jets have added depth to the roster at the running back position as well as for special team return duties.  The team doesn’t appear to be waiting around with bated breath for the return of Mike Goodson this fall.

A source from the Jets admitted last week that the Jets are waiting out the justice process.

“[The Jets] will hold onto Goodson until things become clearer on the legal side,” a team source told Metro.  “There’s no reason to release him now. It’s really a wait and see at this juncture.”

We’re still waiting to see, but don’t expect Goodson on the roster come September.

This court case is a scam it all is being fabricated by the Jets front office.  The truth is the Jets took Goodson into the city and lost him.

Sorry for the errors in the original post, those of you who pointed it out are quite right - the loaded gun was not in Goodson's car and the suspension was not related to PEDs.  This has been corrected now.

Apparently McDougle was a Dennis Thurman sell. Rex apparently thought taking him was risky but Thurman loved the guy.

Well see how good Thurman is at judging CB's.

Why do you continue to get facts wrong about this? It wasn't his car, and it wasn't performance enhancing drugs. The gun was locked away in the center console of someone else's car, where he didn't have access to it, and it was less than 5 grams of weed. The guy's a Jet. The least TJB can do is not lie about what he's being accused of to make him look worse.

Goodson's decision making over the last year has shown football to be a pretty low priority to the guy.  Perhaps the Jets are waiting for the league to make a ruling on him so that they might release him for cause.  I don't know if it'd make much difference to the cap numbers.

Kinda seems like Goodson wants out or he should at least show up for the OTA's. Im sure he knows if he makes the team he wont be seeing the ball much anyway.

He was?  I see that stated in the Newsday piece, but I can't confirm anywhere else that Goodson's four-game suspension was for "performance enhancing" drugs.  He was suspended for four games under the NFL's drug policy, that much is clear, but that could be under the substance abuse drug policy and not the performance enhancing drug policy.

This article on the NFLPA's AP site from last October says that he served "a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy."

Was the suspension for PEDs as opposed to controlled substances ever explicitly stated by the league, the team, the NFLPA, or Goodson?  I can't find it anywhere.

Awe No! Heavy heavy hangs over Goodsons head..

One spot on the 90 man roster isn't that critical but if this situation is still dragging out through training camp, Idzik's hand will probably be forced once cutdowns start.

@Bent Gracias.  If I could make one more small suggestion:

I'd change the fifth paragraph to read as follows:

Goodson and the driver of the car, Garant Evans, were indicted as co-defendants on second degree unlawful possession of a weapon — for the loaded gun locked in the glove compartment of the car — and fourth degree prohibited weapons and devices — for the hollow-point bullet.

It's important to note that BOTH of them were indicted for MUTUAL possession of the gun/bullets (as opposed to just Goodson alone being charged with possession), that the gun/bullets were locked in the glovebox, and that Goodson was not the driver of the vehicle.

It seems pedantic to continually list all that information, but all these stories end up getting indexed by Google's spiders and if information in them is incomplete or in any way misleading, it creates a digital history trail that can lead some future reader down an incorrect path.

Also, there were five bullets loaded in the gun, but only one of them was a hollow-point round.

@a57se Thats interesting that Idzik would value Thurmans opinion that high even over Rex and pull the trigger especially in the 3rd round.

Goodson and his knucklehead friend were passed out in the center lane of a highway.  Goodson was so wasted he had to go to the hospital before they could arrest him.  His friend wasn't in much better shape.

Goodson is a 27 year old man, not some high school kid who made a mistake and overindulged without knowing the consequences.  The guy threw away his career and most likely his freedom, for at least three years.  No way he does less time than the plea agreement offered.  These two idiots could've killed innocents with their behavior.  Don't act like Goodson deserves a slap on the wrist.

@Ceifus Hornswoggle I'm thinking they can't cut him until a verdict in the case. Goodson may understand that and decided its hopeless.

Maybe he and the team came to an agreement about OTA's.....who knows?

@Hanknaples Hey, remember that time you defending the Dolphins yanking health care and later an actual job from a guy who had worked from home for the team for 17 years so he could care for his wife who has cystic fibrosis?

And THIS is a disgrace?

Bytor

@Hanknaples I find it fascinating that you rush to defend guys like Donald Sterling and Ritchie Incognito but Goodson is a disgrace and disgusting.

So, is he a criminal or a wannabe?

@Hanknaples

Sincerely,

The guy who just defended the Dolphins for switching their health care plan to exclude cystic fibrosis medications from their coverage even though they had a scout who had worked for the team for 17 years with a wife who had cystic fibrosis, changing his out-of-pocket costs for her medication from $10 per pill to $3,000 per pill, and then a month later fired him outright.

@a57se Not really, they can just put him on a suspension list that won't count towards the roster limit.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@a57se Yeah, the team probably needs to know what his situation will be by the mid-camp cutdown to 75, I'd say.  So, that's like August 16th-ish.

@tsjc68

Wasn't the car Goodson and Evans in a rental?

tsjc68
tsjc68

@Ceifus Hornswoggle @__fense You're building a powerful and compelling case for his recklessness and public endangerment.  You're right, this guy is an ignorant, selfish, loser and we should get him off the street at once.

Garant Evans, that is.

Mike Goodson?  He seems to be guilty of nothing more than getting really drunk and really high.  He didn't tote any guns or operate a motor vehicle under the influence.

Getting really drunk and really high while not possessing any lethal instruments or engaging in any reckless behavior is not something that should make you a pariah.

You want to put Garant Evans in jail?  Be my guest.  Mike Goodson?  No.

@Ceifus Hornswoggle   __fense didnt defend him he said he would appreciate the facts being stated  in the article instead of the BS.

@tsjc68

It is pretty obvious he was suspended for the marijuana found on him at the scene in this incident. Not PED's.

a57se
a57se

@Hanknaples @a57se

What is wrong with keeping the guy on the 90 man roster until the team knows what the outcome of the court case is?

The Dolphins didn't just release Incognito and Martin when that whole mess surfaced last year.

they waited patiently for things to play out before making any final cuts.

Idzik is doing the same with Goodson. There is no hurry right now for the Jets to make a decision on him and it isn't costing them a dime.

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se @Bent They could put him on a did not report list having told him not to report or alternatively could keep him out of practice and PUP him on the basis of his injury.  I believe they would also be able to levy a team-imposed suspension as well.

a57se
a57se

@tsjc68 @a57se

So then this is basically a he said/he said type of deal where the gun in question could (please notice I said COULD not WAS) of been put in the glove compartment by Goodson or Evans or someone else for all we know.

I would think if no one comes forward and takes responsibility for the gun, Goodson is screwed.

a57se
a57se

@__fense @a57se

Well I guess someone could make an argument that any kind of drug could be considered performance enhancing but when talking about the NFL and its' suspensions, I would defer to their terminology.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@a57se But when the Dolphins did that, they were right to do that, because they're the Dolphins.

And the Jets are wrong to do what they're doing, because they're the Jets.

Sincerely,

Hankzie

@Bent @a57se

All of which would require Idzik to do something which he doesn't have to do right now, which is the only point I was making.

tsjc68
tsjc68

@a57se @tsjc68

The fact that Evans claimed the gun was his at the scene (even though he later recanted) AND he was the driver of the vehicle (and thus, had the keys to the glovebox in his possession) AND that Evans has prior weapons violations probably means that if it goes to court and Goodson and Evans both point the finger at each other and let a jury decide, the jury probably convicts Evans and lets Goodson walk.

Bytor
Bytor

@Hanknaples Interesting take, can you share with us why Jonathan Martin is on an NFL roster and Richie Incognito is a free agent?

tsjc68
tsjc68

@Hanknaples Except, as has been stated here numerous times, the best way to avoid having to pay Goodson any money is to wait for him to be convicted (or cop a plea) and then claw back his bonus money as his felony charge violates the CBA.

If they cut a non-felony-convicted Goodson now, he gets to keep the money.  If they cut him after he's officially a felon, he has to give it back (and we're not obligated to give him any more.)

So, if the crux of your argument is "It's disgusting to have to pay this felon scumbag his salary" then the proper course of action is to wait patiently for him to actually be a felon so that you don't have to pay him.

@tsjc68 @a57se

that is pure speculation on your part........and wishful thinking from my perspective.

@tsjc68 @Hanknaples Why ruin a perfectly good, crazy, emotional. and self-serving tirade with facts? I oughta....

It's not "pure speculation", it's an educated guess based on years of jury behavioral research.
