Howard visiting Raiders, Jets interested in Strief

Austin Howard, unable to get a deal done with the Jets before free agency, will visit the Oakland Raiders (Costello, March 11).

Update – 12:26 a.m.: Howard will sign with the Raiders for five years and $30 million ($15 million guaranteed) (Schefter, March 12).

If Howard does leave, the Jets have already inquired on Zach Streif, formerly of the Saints (Cimini, March 11). The 30-year-old Stief is unlikely to stay in New Orleans (Hartstein, Feb. 2).

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

Strief, listed at 6’7″ and 320 pounds has started 45 games in his NFL career including 38 over the past three seasons and was rated as the top right tackle in the NFL by PFF in 2013. However, that should perhaps be taken with a pinch of salt to some extent because Strief had an elite right guard (Jahri Evans) on his left shoulder and also benefited from the fact that Drew Brees is so adept at moving around in the pocket. With the uncertainty over who will start at right guard for the Jets, coupled with Geno Smith’s comparative lack of pocket presence (assuming he starts), Strief could find his assignments have an added degree of difficulty if he becomes the Jets’ starter at right tackle.

Some of the contracts being paid out to offensive tackles so far during this free agent signing period have been much higher than expected, so Howard looks set to get an offer far in excess of what his perceived value was entering this process. With Strief being into his thirties, the Jets might be able to get him to agree to a shorter deal with less guaranteed money than what they would have had to pay Howard to retain him as he enters his prime.

Of course, Howard signing with Oakland is not yet a certainty, so it remains to be seen whether the Jets will make an offer to Strief (or someone similar) or keep lines of communication open with Howard.

Revis is the best corner in the game.. In life you not gonna like everyone....

As I've said before, most teams listed OL in their top 3 needs for 2014 so what we're seeing now was predictable. The teams that sign them now will then have greater flexibility on draft day(s). It'll be interesting to see what Idzik will do if Howard signs elsewhere.

According to PFF Strief had two of his best games when Jahri Evans was out. Strief's back up was absolutely horrible the week that he started..btw it's a grain of salt. I think Idzik wants to sign a whole lot of potential type guys, and let them compete for the spots. I think I may have heard that competition thing somewhere. Still hoping for Revis at 12mil per front loaded with a no hold out clause. Hell maybe we can trade him again next year.

Weird rumor going around that Rex convinced Idizk to kill a Verner deal to get Revis

@Trav Rivera In the NFL quantity is quality. Most of these big FA names were unheard of 2 years ago. Competition is Idzik's mantra. Who knows where the next great player is going to come from. Sign 12 FAs, and draft 12 players and let them fight it out in camp. That's what I'd do.

What's the rush. Most rushed decisions are bad decisions.

Jets biggest need is WR and no WR was signed.

@SackDance99  Pretty experienced and a scheme fit, but 32 and I wouldn't say any better than average at best.

@SackDance99  No idea.

That's the thing about FA: there are going to be a bunch of quality cuts coming up in the days to come.

Why would Revis take a pay cut to come to the Jets. Tanny might have over paid to bring back Revis. Thank God the Tanny days are history just like Revis.

More than likely is, Rex killed the Verner attempt because he's not a Rex corner. Again, speculation. But..... It certainly looks like cover 2 corners are not commanding the big dollars.

Jared Allen is on his way to Denver. Unlikely Denver signs both Ware and Jared Allen. The Jets should try hard to sign either Allen, Ware, or Peppers.

There are some elite pass rushers out there

@bradysucks  Good pet thought for the night bro, I'm loggin' off, talk to u guys manana....

@Bent @SackDance99 Why would he take a pay cut to be forced into a situation, when he can wait to be cut, and then choose his team. Pettine is no Rex Ryan, and Cleavland is not NY by a long shot either. Do you really think Revis wants to reward Tampa with a draft pick anyway?

SackDance99
SackDance99

He can't really expect much more than Verner or Davis money, though.

nickballs

@Pat d  because Revis bout to be cut....and he wont be gettin 16 mil from anyone...so give him 12 or 13 and lets roll

Steven Windeler

@MPTG_Frank Verner's game is playing off coverage, and diagnosing routes. His weakness is quick routes over the middle. The game plan against the Jets is short drops, and quick passes over the middle. Terrible fit. We need tight coverage, or press coverage. Revis, or Browner as a fall back I think is the way to go. Captian Morgan would be nice in the slot at the right price.

@SackDance99  Von only plays RDE on passing downs with Aryers kicking inside and a DT coming off. Ware & Miller would both be on the field almost 90-100% of the time (excluding subpackages)

Bent
Bent moderator

@SackDance99  They play 4-3 under with Miller as the SAM OLB.  So there are two DE spots and I guess Ware would play one of those, as would Allen if they got him.

SackDance99
SackDance99

Where does Ware play with Von Miller there?

Steven Windeler
Steven Windeler

@SackDance99 I'd guess he gets 12-13 mil per. I'd love it if we could give him his 16 mil this year on a front loaded 4 year 48mil deal with a no holdout poison pill. Maybe a 52 mil deal for him to brag about if the last year was like 20mil easily cuttable.

@SackDance99

I'm sure he expects it. But if he gets to FA, he won't actually get it.

@Pat d  we will see....if Shields got over 9 mil...then you can be damn sure Revis gettin over 10

No way are the Jets paying that much. I doubt if anyone else will either
