Interesting storylines from the NFL Combine

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Other than the Harbaugh bombshell, Phibin’s general befuddlement and Sam’s poised demeanor, there’s been lots of other news from the Combine over the weekend, here’s some of it … more to come.

Jordan Matthews will rise — A lot of players put in good times, but one of the most intriguing to me is Jordan Matthews who posted a 4.46 40 yard dash time.  Matthews is a big receiver, a film room maven and was productive as a player in a program that struggles against their SEC brethren.  While he’s been pushed into second round talk, watch to see if his speed doesn’t start to push him back up.

NFL: CombineUp and Down — While it can’t all come down to 40 yard dash numbers, Kelvin Benjamin and Marquise Lee’s was unimpressive.  Lee’s run even made Pete Carroll say “wow” (but not in a good way). Brandin Cooks will rise (and he’ll take $10K home for his efforts) and Odell Beckham will solidify his prospects as a first rounder … look for Lee and Benjamin to start sliding …

Clowney’s 40 time — Jadaveon Clowney shocked the football world with a withering 40 yard dash time … teams in the top three are going to have some tough choices ahead.

Will Schiano end up in New England? — Is Belichick is turning New England into his little reclamation workshop?  Between Josh McDaniels, Mike Lombardi and his chumminess at the Combine with Greg Schiano, don’t be surprised if the former Rutgers and Tampa coach wind up with the Patriots.

Steve Smith and the Panthers parting ways? — Is it possible that Steve Smith might be out in Carolina?  Ron Rivera was evasive about his veteran receiver and what his role with the team might be going forward.  While most would assume he will be back in 2014, his entry into the free agent market would be one the Jets would be wise to follow closely.

if Watkins drops down to seven or eight, does anyone have an idea what it would take to move up to get him. I think he's the only no brainer.

First priority of off season is resigning Howard and then signing one of G Schwartz or Asamoah!!!! Resign Colon to back up G spot. Online needs immediate attention.

It hasn't been mentioned Bryan Thomas's 2002 workout was better than Clowney's.

At the same weight without starving himself to do so, the 266lb Thomas ran a 4.47.

Did 33 reps and ran a 4.00 shuttle. All accomplished on a bad wheel which didn't

permit him to conclude the workout

Every time I see Pettine's name involved with something dumb, I smile. Take that you bastard.

Have seen Gilbert projected to lions often. They need help there. We will see tomorrow, but Dennard may project higher...in state guy, too. Does other fall to 18 and become bpa? If Evans and Ebron are gone, I'm unsure on Lee and feel Matthews could be had lower, same for Cooks or even Allen Robinson. Moving up? Watkins unrealistic. If QBs and LTs go early and Mack slides, he would be worth moving up to 8-10 range. Otherwise, maybe we slide down with somebody I. Love with Jernigan, or Pitt dt, etc.

If I were the Jets I would address the secondary in FA first, their are some safeties out there in Byrd, Ward, Whitner I would pay for, and then go after a CB if we cut Cro like Thurmond or Shields.. After that sign a decent vet guard and LB.. Then draft all skill players in the early rounds on offense--- Ebron, Matthews, Cooks, Lee, Benjamin whoever... I think this is all feasible and this draft is a potential gold mine for skill players which is really rare, if we hit on one or preferably two of them it could really change the team, considering Geno progresses and can utilize the new weapons..

aren't we hoping to take Mathews in the 2nd round?

Schiano is one of the few people that likes BB, so it's not surprising he would bring him in

Shout out to the Jets TRAINERS!

"On their flight to Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, the Jets athletic training staff jumped in to help a female passenger in medical distress. Lead by head ATC John Melody, they administered potentially life saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

The Jets staff was not required by law to intervene, but true to their profession, they did not hesitate to lend a hand. Upon landing, ground medical personnel took over."

Where are the local reporters with this?

A guy I like and wouldn't mind seeing on the Jets docket is DeMarcus Lawrence from Boise St.

I could see him doing a time share this year and taking over on the outside in 2015...

I'm drooling looking at Khalil Mack.

Okay, screw it. I WANT HIM. GIVE ME THE EDGE RUSHER!

If Evans and Ebron are gone go with Lee. Dude can play.

@Peter G I think you hit it right on the head.  There is a lot of skill positions available.  RB, WR and if Idzik can get the right "combo" of players we could potentially find a 2 offensive starters in this draft.    We will have enough picks to move up in later rounds to grab guys if it is who we want.

That's what I've been saying all along......

@Peter G  I think we may all be surprised by the way the draft unfolds. How many saw the Richardson draft pick coming? I hope that Idzik sticks to what we've been told, and drafts best player available.

@jdb4  What a let down.  I thought he had been saying he could run it in sub-6.3.

That's still really good, although the top QB posted a 6.55 (albeit that he's realistically not going to play QB at the NFL level).

Brendan

@marcus81  He is probably a fringe-first rounder now, if not a solid first rounder.

Best defensive player in the draft. Id also b a happy camper with that pick Bredan..He's a good one.. No doubt.

Peter G

True, I have faith in Idzik especially if he follows the Seattle mold, their secondary is unreal, we could make major improvements their via FA amd the D would be elite..then address the O via draft, especially WR, because the FA options aren't amazing and will require top dollar..

@Bent @jdb4

Yeah, he had said he was going to break the record which is in the 6.2's.

Nonetheless it's a good indicator to be in the top 5 as it seems to translate.

Last year the top 5, Mingo, Bostic, Jordan, Collins, Ogletree

Before that, Irvin, Ingram, McClellin, Lewis, Bradham

and in 2011 Acho, Miller, Carter, Houston, Moch

Of those guys, 8 are starters or see the majority of snaps.  4 are depth guys or will likely take over as starters and one is out of football for criminal charges (lewis), one was on IR (carter) and one (bradham) is unknown

Leaving Watkins off because he will be gone. I will also change the order on this every time you ask, most likely.

@jdb4 Haven't watched any film on him since he's almost certainly a top-10 pick. I probably will, if for no other reason than to torture myself.

@SackDance99 Intrigued, but not sure he's worth a 2nd (which I think was his projected round the last I checked).

@Peter G

Agree that secondary problems are best addressed via FA, not the draft.   D'Backs need more experience and seasoning before they're effective...Milliner case in point.   Get at least one top S and one top CB in FA, then grab some weapons with first couple picks in draft.

Combine performance doesn't play as big a role as the interview and measureables, such as height etc, do.

lamjones
lamjones

@Brendan @Marcus Armstrong there were some reports questioning his ability to fight through DBs at the line of scrimmage, doubts about his physicality and deep speed (speed obviously addressed).  He will interview well and combined with the tape I think he will still go at the end of the 1st.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marcus Armstrong I'm not sure what you're referring to. Matthews was a "winner" of the Senior Bowl on most write-ups, I thought?

Omari Brown
Omari Brown

@a57se i mentioned him on one of the earlier threads. Watch some tape i think you will be impressed long arms usies moves and can bend. Knock on him might be conference he played in and was suspended early in the year

bklyndude
bklyndude

@Brendan @bklyndude  I think Evans fits the Jets nicely and allows the other Jet receivers to fit their roles more naturally.  Given our additional picks,  a 3rd is not too rich this year.

Brendan
Brendan

@bklyndude I'm at a point where I'd be willing to part with a 3rd to move up and get "my guy," but nothing beyond that. So, moving up a few spots (4, maybe 5), instead of jumping into the top-10.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@a57se @bklyndude @High$ocietyJet

If Evans was sitting there at 12,  I would be real tempted to move up for him,  but I agree there are good WR's in this draft not to get too crazy.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@High$ocietyJet

I think Clowney/Watkins/Mack/Evans are drafted top ten this year and not players the Jets should trade up for,  just too expensive.

11 thru 17 gets more tempting for one of those players,  but hard to justify getting another defensive player given the teams offensive hardships.  I would take Lee over Ebron at 18.  Hard to justify taking a TE at 18 that looks more like Dustin Keller than Vernon Davis.

High$ocietyJet
High$ocietyJet

@Brendan @High$ocietyJet  actually Watkins was available its a dream scenario.. but out of the players you listed I would probably go.                           Mack/Clowney/Evans/ with both Lee and Ebron far behind

D
D

@jaygo @jdb4Then sanchez can throw to Gordon and Watkins.....lmao

D
D

@jaygo @jdb4I think Watkins is headed to Cleveland too.  WHy wouldnt you pair him with Josh Gordon?  They have another first rounder too.   Manziel honestly might slip

Pat d
Pat d

Cleveland has a QB. They looked good until he got hurt

jdb4
jdb4

@jaygo @jdb4

Well the reason I see them going Watkins is I know they love Hoyer in Cleveland, so I think they will want to see if he comes back strong.  I believe they will get a veteran to compete like Sanchez, Vick or Freeman.

Then I think they will take a QB in the 2nd round of either Garoppolo, Carr or Mettenberger

a57se
a57se

@jdb4 @Brendan

That was ridiculous but Oakland was desperate....why can't the Jets get deals like that?

jdb4
jdb4

@Brendan @jdb4

Normally it would. It would cost two 2nd round picks, but if no one is knocking down St. Louis door to move up, I don't see Snead asking for the moon.

Similar to last year when Oak traded down from 3 for only a 2nd round pick.

Brendan
Brendan

@jdb4 If you're trying to mock trades, that's a fairly good one to mock, I think. Might need a little more to move up like that, but the logic is sound.

jdb4
jdb4

@Brendan @jdb4

I do.  Snead used to work with Dimitroff in Atl, and I don't see Snead playing hardball with him.  If someone doesn't blow his doors down with an offer I see Atl trading it's 2nd round pick and maybe it's 4th to move up.  Snead wants to move down a few spots and will likely get the LT he wants at 6.

Brendan
Brendan

@jdb4 You have ATL trading up? Or was that just a typo?

I can see it shaking out like that, fwiw.

jdb4
jdb4

@Brendan @jdb4

Yeah, I see him going #8 to Minnesota.

As of right now, before free agency this is how I see the top ten going

1 - Bortles - Hou

2 - Clowney - Atl

3 - Bridgewater - Jax

4 - Watkins - Cle

5 - Manziel - Oak

6 - Matthews - Stl

7 - Robinson - TB

8 - Mack - Min

9 - Barr - Buff

10 - Det - actually I have no idea where Det will go yet
