Kotwica the new special teams coach in Washington

Ben Kotwica is the new special teams coach in Washington (Marvez).

It was reported that he was interviewing for that position on Tuesday.

UPDATE 3:29PM: The Redskins have confirmed this report, via WaPo.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

The blocked punt in the Panthers game which Kotwica’s poor scheming literally opened the door for didn’t do the first year coordinator any favors.

Kotwica was an assistant for Westhoff dating back to Mangini, so the fact that the Jets would allow the heir apparent on special teams to walk out the door after one year as the coordinator seems a bit odd.  It wasn’t as if the Jets gave Kotwica a ton of talent to work with either in his first year as coordinator.

Even so, for anyone who has attended a practice and listened to Kotwica, his coaching style is … shall we say … abrasive.  We’re not so sure many of his teamers will shed many tears should he leave.  Westhoff could get away with being a surly crank because he had earned it, Kotwica just seemed to steal from the Eric Mangini Big Book of Disingenuous Coach Impersonations and we can’t imagine it came off well.

Paging Dr. Westhoff … paging Dr. Michael Westhoff …

Bassett,

Actually it was Kevin O' Dea who was Mangini's hand picked Special Teams Coordinator in 2008 to replace Westhoff. It was Westhoff's selfishness that changed the picture with the jets team in 2008 because EVERYONE on the team respected Westhoff. Sometimes the moves that seem like they are a must do sometimes are not so clear. Westhoff always had angry old man persona about him and it leaked out during the Hard Knocks episodes in 2010. The jets definitely had their struggles when Westhoff took over the special teams duties and  it showed in 2009 when Rex Ryan was in his rookie season as a head coach. Go back to the 2009 miami dolphins game in new york.

Now that traffic has become slow, I would like to share with you a thought on a different topic. We all know the jets are in dire need of playmakers on offense, wrs/TE, and a 3rd down pass and catching RB, but let's not forget about the oline. It is not rocket science that in a pass heavy NFL, the offense goes as the oline goes.

Last season our offense has been up and down and wildly inconsistent. PFF was not too kind to the Jets oline ranking them at #25. We have serious issues in competent depth and both guard positions. I hope that the line is not forgotten this offseason, especially with Geno continuing his development, or all could be for naught.       http://thejetpress.com/2014/01/15/pff-offensive-line-rankings-new-york-jets-ranked-25th/

Cromartie on if he thinks Rex Ryan would have been back if Jets lost in Miami in Wk 17: "Honestly, I don’t know.... I don’t think so" #nyj       Yikes, if that is true, that is cutting it real close, not exactly a secure situation for Rex now.

Can I give it a go? Judging by the play by the STs units, no real STs knowledge is required.

Can't say that I'm sorry to see him go.  Plus, he wasn't really a Rex guy; he sort of inherited the job once Westhoff left.

Watching Westhoff on SNY (post game show) he looked like a "fish out of water"....could he be the special teams coach-Part Deux ?

jake100
jake100

I think with the lack of talent on STs and the fact that it was Kotwica's first season as STs coach, and with the jets finishing at least close to mid pack, that Kotwica did a decent job.

jake100
jake100

I guess he left for job security reasons. With Rex not given a multi extension, coaches feel insecure about their own long term security. If Rex gets whacked next season, the other coaches know they will be blown up too, so they might want a more stable situation.

Bassett,

Ted Ginn returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. Rex said before the game that he was going to take a couple of key  special teams players (players not necessarily standouts) out of the game before the game and  activate several linebackers to help with the front seven (to stop the wildcat) in miami's offense. This poorly calculated decision affected the game and also proved that Rex amongst a "jet great" in Westhoff could not stand up in management and coaching to Westhoff to make an important move that could change the game against the dolphins.

@jake100 I will be disappointed if OL is not addressed through both a FA signing AND using the 3rd or 4th pick.  1st and 2nd go to WR and TE.

Good I hope he gets he job and does well.

Rex's coaching tree will grow even more.

Wow, like Manish ever tells the truth. His goal is to generate stories so people click links to the Daily News. Don't you know that? He isn't a reporter, he is a yellow journalist.

@jake100 That's funny, considering IDZIK AND WOODY TOLD REX BEFORE THE MIAMI GAME THAT HE'D BE BACK.

@SackDance99

If he just inherited the job, the Jets did not do their homework. They had plenty of time to find a suitable replacement. Westy let the Jets know he was not coming back well in advance.

I guess some of the coaches might  feel if Rex gets dumped next season, they will too in the house cleaning.

Hanknaples

Bassett,

It also proved that neither Rex nor Westhoff knew what they were doing with the special teams and further drove the team down because later the jets had a difficulty of building a base and identity of the team with strong special teams. This was talked about by Westhoff at the end of this season when he said the jets lacked "talent on special teams".

@DrJonathanReefer From what I hear he's very much an outside bet for this job.  The top candidates are all still in the playoffs.

SackDance99

@jake100@SackDance99Their homework?  He was Westy's assistant forever.  But, you never know when the heir apparent ends up being a dud.  IMO, because he was Westy's guy and had been with the Jets organization for so long, out of a sense of loyalty, the Jets/Rex gave him a shot.  It didn't work out too well.  My point was that he wasn't a Rex guy.  Rex, whether by choice or because Tanny demanded it, kept Westhoff.  Westhoff already had Kotwicka as his assistant.

Rex was smart to keep Westhoff, but that doesn't change the fact that Westhoff and his staff weren't Rex's guys.

@jake100 Why did you reply to yourself saying the same exact thing?

Hanknaples

Bassett,

With all the top five rankings in special teams that Westhoff had with the jets in his career his presence did not solve the underlying problem (which was to build a winner and a winning culture) because he always got more credit than he deserved (by the jets fans).

Bassett,

So to bash Mangini when at the time he had to deal with Westhoff (another fan favorite) just like he had with FARVE is essentially hopping on the bandwagon with the rest of the clueless jets fans who to this day blame Mangini. When is it enough? Let's move on Bassett, it has been five years since Mangini left the team!

@Bent @DrJonathanReefer From what I hear, quality people are put off by a rebuilding organization that will fire a coach after one year.

Joe/Orlando
Joe/Orlando

@jake100 Do you have something that indicates Schottenheimer was fired by the Jets?  I've only ever seen it reported that he resigned.

jake100

@Brendan @jake100

Meaning that just saying things does not meant that it will be followed through if another circumstance takes place. In other words if the Jets would have lost that game to the phins even after, as you point out that they said before the game, Rex is in for 2014, that does not necessarily mean that would have happened. They can twist things any way they want if it is not in writing. I have seen that many times and Shotty was just one example that I cited.

Brendan
Brendan

@jake100 What does that have with the owner and GM telling Rex before the game that he was being retained for 2014?

jake100
jake100

Remember Shotty " he will be a jet unless he gets a HC position".....Rex    The next week he was an OC for the Rams!

The final game did not determine Rex's future. Fact. Deal with it, and move on.

The ironic part is, Rex might not even be the guy now! If he was, he would have a multi extension.
