Is rookie Jalen Saunders the team’s next punt returner?

The Jets are hoping rookie Jalen Saunders becomes the team’s primary punt returner this season (Cimini, June 28).

Saunders averaged 15.4 yards per punt return and scored two return touchdowns for the Oklahoma Sooners last year.

New York selected Saunders in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

It's so hard to tell what is hype and what is reality at this stage--we haven't seen Jalen Saunders or any of the draft picks against real competition. No pads, no real contact--who knows haw good any of these guys are? but having said that, the real fun of pre-season is being able to dream big. Saunders looks good so far, and I hope that he will be both a great receiver and a great punt returner.  In his favor--speed and quickness and a lot of guts. But Jeremy Kerley has those qualities, too, and he has been a disappointment as a punt returner. So it remains to be seen if Saunders will be an improvement.

it's too early to say he will be the punt returner, best to try out all the guys that might be able to do the job first and then decide who's the best

Gonna be tough to beat out all the great returners we have. Didn't we have the best punt return average in the league last year?...or do we not have anyone else that can even catch a punt cleanly?

I'll go out on a limb, and say if he's not returning punts, that means he was hurt.

Cimini was asked which FAs he could see the Jets making a run at next year (with their large cap space) and he said: Kerley, Ellis and Powell. Way to go out on a limb, Rich.

Just heard Mike Vick get prank phone called on the radio. I wouldn't have been mad if he blew up, but he handled it really well.

Young players have to sometimes start out proving themselves on special teams.  I just hope Saunders stays healthy and gets a chance to prove himself as a receiver.  He reminds me of Santana Moss.

We better hope so, because I can't do another season of fair catches.

@williamg1

I think the Jets are going to go all out next year and sign Kevin Love and Rajon Rondo.

@tsjc68 I'm impressed with how he caught the ball with confidence backed up to the end zone and switching into elusive mode to quickly. Smooth and explosive. I approve.

@tsjc68 He should have been tackled immediately though. I dont know how those 3 guys missed him.

@tsjc68 @williamg1 Nephew Tommy pretended he was a NY radio host, and had a call-in show. Tommy played all the call-in characters and asked only the most uncomfortable questions you could ask Michael Vick: a caller asking if Vick was going to send a jersey to a guy in jail whom Vick had promised to send a jersey. A dude from the NOI asking if the white man was setting up a Geno vs Vick battle as black on black violence perpetuated by "the man." Another guy called in asking about advice for which "ring" he should get his poodle involved in.

A little from Column A, a little from Column B.

The ISU coverage unit took some poor angles... but Saunders also took some great angles.

@williamg1  Was it funny or stupid? Its hard to prank call nowadays because of caller ID. Back in my day it was easy and we did it a lot.

@williamg1 Trust issue if I remember right there was some fumbling issues.

@a57se  He must have "eye juked" em because 3 guys ran past him before he moved. (one was blocked)

@tsjc68 @williamg1 Nah, when it was over, he asked Tommy to return the favor by going on the show. It was setup by Jason Peters.

@levi @williamg1 I didn't find it funny. Actually pretty ignorant. I was just impressed with the way Vick handled it. You could tell he was a pissed/hurt at some points though.

@williamg1 @a57se @levi

Both, they actually they did not trust anyone to catch the punt in the bad weather.

@levi @a57se

They did have some help plus one guy actually got his hands on Saunders but couldn't stop him.

Fun Fact:

He learned the "eye juke" move from the move's originator, Damon Harrison.

@williamg1  Yeah thats what I figured. Now had the Jerky Boys pranked him Im sure it would have been damn funny.
