Aldridge never met with the Knicks. He didn't take the second meeting because he never took the first one.

Can someone please tell me who is scoring the ball other than Melo? I understand our defense improving but we had enough trouble scoring with Melo on the bench, let alone him not having a second scorer next to him on the starting squad either.

@bkyguy78  Galloway Afflalo and hopefully porzingis

when you look at porzingis he's very similar to how Garnett looked when he came into the NBA. luckily for porzingis theres a lot more small ball and not nearly as many bigs to deal with and he probably has a better jump shot than garnett had his rookie season.

I don't think its likely but I wouldn't be completely surprised if porzingis could score 14 a game for you

@bkyguy78 Melo - 25 + Afflalo - 15 + Lopez - 11 + Calderon - 11 + PF - 8 + KP - 9 + O'Quinn - 8 + Galloway \ Grant  \ Shved - 13.

That's 100 points without being delusional about potential. Play defense and it's workable. Not ideal but workable.

@jojo2218 Wow, the Warriors just got another tough-nosed defending dog.

bkyguy78

As one of the biggest Melo critics heading into free agency, I forced myself to step back and objectively say to myself, "you know what, not every team has a franchise superstar like Melo, of course at least one of those big names would sign up to play with him" Boy was I wrong. I have yet to see any reporter write an article about how Melo was the biggest deterrent. All anyone is talking about is Phil, who deserves lots of blame too (ex. not representing us at lottery).

bkyguy78
bkyguy78

You forgot the part where David West called rumors of him coming here "ridiculous". Just another example of what a joke we have become, if that was even possible after the worst losing record in franchise history.

John Munro
John Munro

@bkyguy78  I think that's on Phil Jackson. Like I said its on him to sell the knicks future. The East is weak if we had Jordan, Melo, and West on our team next year is it that ridiculous to say that team could have finished as a top 4 seed? I highly doubt Dallas will be a top 4 seed in the West. I know we won 17 games but it was on Jackson to sell the fact that Melo didn't play and we didn't have you here last year so obviously with you and melo we wont win 17 games.

bkyguy78
bkyguy78

@John Munro @bkyguy78 So Melo deserves zero blame? what happened to everybody wanting to play with him? The fact that David West can say something so hurtful and publicly make us look ridiculous says it all, because it seems like more players in the league feel the same way.

John Munro
John Munro

@bkyguy78 @John Munro  i'm not really sure who should get the blame a lot of it should go to Jackson for not being able to sell a vision and future to these players.

I cant understand how dallas is so much more appealing. I thik the Knicks with Jordan would have finished with a higher seed  than Dallas with Jordan and Dirk is 37 what is Jordan gonna be doing there in 2 years. I put that on Phil for not being able to sell that

At least the Knicks didn't draft Willie CAllie Stein or a player they thought could help them compete next year cause they thought they would sign Munroe and have a shot next year to compete cause that would have been awful.

At least we drafted porzingis and have a shot at the best player in this talented draft in the next couple years. Theres nothing wrong to say Porzingis and Grant are our future and a damn bright future at that, and we have Melo who will have some trade value next year it's not like the Knicks are the Knicks under Isiah completely capped out with no trade assets and no good young players. It is realistic to see the Knicks turn this around in the next 3 seasons and build a team that can compete for the next 10 seasons but it's not gonna happen next year. That's not negative that's optimistic.

But Melo isn't going to turn this around and Porzingis isn't going to do this next year, and Lopez and Afflalo aren't going to bring us to the playoffs. But that doesn't mean next year is nothing. If porzingis shows the NBA he has a future guys will want to play here and see that we do have a future.

Maurice Ndour is my sleeper pick (sight unseen) to make the team. I'll bet Phil is going to regret signing Quin or more likely Williams when he sees the choices he has in the minors this weekend.

hosket

Donnie Walsh is a gentleman who knows basketball.......Phil went into the negotiations knowing that Dolan is an ignorant screwball who only understands power and leverage.  Phil gets lambasted for getting overpaid at $12 mil per year.  He knew what he was doing.....Dolan has left Phil alone and kept his mouth shut...Dolan opened it once .....for Isiah [ dig for the imagery].  Dolan can't get rid of Phip without much pain and as a result has insulated Phil against himself.. genius.

rico

@hosket how exactly do you know how involved James Dolan is or isn't with Phil and the franchise?

Word has it that Dolan insisted on keeping Melo, Dolan also hired Isiah to run the women's team across the hall which was supposed to be part of Phils job.  Did Dolan ever ask Phil about it?  No he informed him of it.

Not really certain why you posted what you did in the first place but it seems off..

Let's be honest with ourselves here. It wont be until year 4 of Phil's 5 year deal that we even have a chance to get out of the first round of the playoffs let alone contend for a championship. We need to get out of the remaining bad deals we have in place ex: Calderon and Melo. Then we will have a more flexible future and have some young players with 3 years experience. The best way to build in any sport is through the draft. There are rare circumstances like Miami where 3 Superstars in their prime team up. SA built through the draft - Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, Leonard. Warriors - Curry, Thompson, Green. The Thunder before the Harden trade drafted Durant, Westbrook, and Harden. Taken even another sport. The Seahawks 10 best players they all got through the draft because no one wanted them. We need to stop trading picks and start to develop young talent. Then when you have good young talent you can attract veterans to play there because of a promising future. This is a tough rebuild for all of us to handle but the reality is its going to be another 3-4 before we are a serious contender for years to come.

petehasglu
petehasglu

@cstaylor23 Most rebuilds take this long. Hopefully by year three we will be competing high level.

NeedANewGMHCQB
NeedANewGMHCQB

You're right. The Spurs have done it the right way. I remember reading last year that Julius Peppers was the only player on the GB Packers that had played elsewhere. They draft smart and develop players. That's the blueprint for sustained success.

jojo2218
jojo2218

@cstaylor23 no t really the kids get  yr the new players are solid complimentary players and next yr we can get a stuc with money we get from bump in salary they key is to go 500 this yr and show players we have a decent team and just neeed someone to play w melo

John Munro
John Munro

@cstaylor23  i agree but we don't have any draft picks which kills us. that's why it's so important that we trade melo at the trade deadline for some good young pieces who are still on there rookie contracts. Outside of Phil working some miracle where not going to get the next Russel Westbrooke for Melo but we could probably get 2 potential borderline all stars maybe like Jennings, or iggougdala type players. Phil just has to make sure he doesn't mess up that melo trade, and end up getting an Iman Shumpert or Hardaway type player

petehasglu
petehasglu

The New Knicks are younger, bigger, better defensively, and can actually hit open shots. I'm not sure what the problem is with this off season. We improved on paper. Now lets see these guys gel on the court starting w/ the summer league!

@petehasglu

They want the sexy names. Then get upset they went after sexy names if it doesn't work out. isiah went and got the sexy names. they blame him for not rebuilding the right way. Yet they want Phil to do the same.

John Munro
John Munro

@petehasglu  it's not about getting sexy names. Andre Iggougdala isn't a sexy name but he's a borderline all star and a complete player. We don't even have 1 player on his level. When Walsh was here he signed Raymon Felton and people felt Felton could play at an all star level and he did his first season here. I don't see one player on this roster that could play at an all star level beside Melo.

Lopez and Afflalo are good role players but there not worth 27 million, and those 2 players wouldn't even be in the rotation if they where on the Spurs or the Cavs next season. So how good is this team when they don't have 1 player that could be a role player outside of melo?

Lopez and Afflalo where maybe the 5th and 6th best players on there team last year. And there our second and third best players. This isn't a deap team or a good team.

I agree they will be a better team than last year and im excited to see porzingis and Grant play and have high hopes for tmhe in the future but this team isn't doing anything next year.

John Munro
John Munro

@Thomas LaBella @uliar @petehasglu  so playing hard and winning over 17 games is now good enough?

and I disagree with the quick fix the east isn't strong if we where somehow able to sign Deandre Jordan and David West you don't think this team could have competed in the east?

John Munro
John Munro

@powermoves @John Munro @Thomas LaBella @uliar @petehasglu  I would have loved to seen the Knicks sign David West Deandre Jordan and Afflalo and I would have said damn we can do something next season and be excited. But we didn't. I'm still excited to see porzingis play and grant there is reason for hope. But it's not to compete next season it's to build a team arund porzingis so now i'm thinking trade Melo and start from scratch with porzingis and grant. That's not the worst thing

John Munro
John Munro

@Thomas LaBella @John Munro @uliar @petehasglu  ya I have a job and everything I have said has been the truth.

Knicks aren't winning with Melo in the next 3 sesons. The best move they could make is to trade Melo at the trade deadline for young pieces that way we build a team around Porzingis and Grant and have a lot of good young pieces and a lot of cap space. I don't see how any Knick fan could think it's smart to keep Melo and that we have a chance of being a contender in the next 2-3 years.

Phil also failed this summer theres no way around it. Was Dallas that much more appealing than the Knicks? Dirk is 37 and the west is a dog fight. 27 million on Lopez and afflalo was not what any one expected.

Having said that we can turn it around but this season isn't about getting to the playoffs its about seeing what we have in porzingis and continuing to build a team around porzingis the way the spurs did around Duncan. That's the only  way where gonna build a team that can compete for the next 10 years and have a shot at winning a ring.

petehasglu

Also this team will rebound the ball.

Thomas LaBella
Thomas LaBella

@John Munro @Thomas LaBella @uliar @petehasglu John Munro, you are a real clown. Where did I say winning more than 17 games was good enough? You are all over every article every day. Do you even have a job? Based on the lack of intelligence in your posts, I'm guessing not a real good one.

Thomas LaBella
Thomas LaBella

@uliar @petehasglu Agree on all of the above. I am tired of the negativity. We won 17 games last year. There were no quick fixes. I think this roster will play hard every night. When was the last time you could say that about a Knicks team?

Anthony Kunjbehari
Anthony Kunjbehari

Instead of the negative spin - how about a positive. To use a football parallel, this is the year we finally retrenched our lines. It's a necessary step and was overdue for this team. These building block basics are a good thing.

NeedANewGMHCQB

What free agents were "lured" to the Knicks in the past? I can't think of one.

NeedANewGMHCQB
NeedANewGMHCQB

I'll give u Houston, if I recall he got something like 5 years, $40M to come here in '96. Amare is ridiculous as he was given a contract he wouldn't have gotten anywhere else after it was clear Knicks whiffed on Lebron. So one player was lured here in 20 years.

uliar
uliar

@NeedANewGMHCQB

Amare was signed by Donnie Walsh in the hopes of luring Lebron. Lebron wanted Cavs to trade for Amare the season prior. When Lebron didn't sign, Melo was the fall back plan because he actually wanted to come to NY

Name the players we lost in the Melo trade.

NeedANewGMHCQB

Couldn't agree more. It's not as if Walsh needed to tread carefully; to be the "good employee" to ensure that he would get another job opportunity. If it wasn't what he wanted to do, he should have said no.

Anthony Kunjbehari
Anthony Kunjbehari

@nyoak34 It would have been nice if he could have done that...but standing up to a loose cannon like Dolan would have been herculean.

We have our guy who has both FU money / gravitas and his name is 2-time Knick World Champion Phil Jackson.

While I agree that Donnie should have been more adamant about not trading all those assets, he was in ill-health and building from within was still a foreign concept to the org and this city. Hell, it still IS judging by Twitter and many of these blog comments :).

uliar
uliar

@nyoak34

Donnie plan was to gut the team and go after Lebron 2 seasons later. 2nd, Galo, Chandler and Felton would need a new contract. 3rd, Chandler missed a season to China and injury. Galo got little nagging injuries until the season ending injury. Felton we got back and wish we didn't. Moz was the only player I didn't want traded.

NeedANewGMHCQB
NeedANewGMHCQB

The idea that NY fans won't have the patience for a rebuild is a myth conjured up by talk radio and ESPN. We have been patient and loyal through a 15 yr tragedy. I'll have no problem watching this Jax process play out for the next 2-3 years.

hosket
hosket

@nyoak34  The beauty of Phil asking and getting 12mil per year is that Dolan can't get rid of him....without much pain and embarrassment.  Donnie didn't have the "poison pill".....

No mention of Grant? He was one of the best PGs in college BB and probably the smartest who's uncle excelled in the triangle, scored 25 in a win against Duke, at least deserves mentioning with Lopez, and the others they picked, it's what they did in the draft and free agency that defines offseason success or failure.

NeedANewGMHCQB

I believe that everyone is vastly underestimating the impact that Grant will have on this team.
