Jets 30 Non-Local Visits

Jake Steinberg, TheJetsBlog.com

While I’ll be back with the next installment of the Jets Player Interest List tomorrow, I’d thought it would be cool to take a step back today and look at the 30 prospects that Jets brought in for pre-draft visits. (Note: This does not mean workout. Teams are not allowed to do any football related activities while visiting a team. It’s all meetings, physicals, class room work, etc.)

Quarterback: Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois), Logan Thomas (Virginia Tech), Tom Savage (Pittsburgh).

Running Back: Dri Archer (Kent State)

Wide receiver: Odell Beckham Jr. (LSU), Kelvin Benjamin (Florida State), John Brown (Pittsburg State), Brandin Cooks (Oregon State), Mike Evans (Texas A&M), Jarvis Landry (LSU), Marqise Lee (USC), Walt Powell (Murray State), Paul Richardson (Colorado).

Tight end: Jace Amaro (Texas Tech), Eric Ebron (North Carolina), C.J. Fiedorowicz (Iowa), Troy Niklas (Notre Dame), Austin Seferian-Jenkins (Washington).

Linebacker: Kevin Pierre-Louis (Boston College).

Cornerback: Darqueze Dennard (Michigan State), Kyle Fuller (Virginia Tech), Justin Gilbert (Oklahoma State), Dexter Mcdougle (Maryland), Keith McGill (Utah), Bradley Roby (Ohio State), Jason Verrett (TCU).

Outside linebacker/defensive end: Demarcus Lawrence (Boise State).

Safety: Deone Bucannon (Washington State), Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (Alabama), Calvin Pryor (Louisville).

By the shear numbers of prospects brought in at certain positions you can tell where the areas are the jets think they'll need to address in the draft.

Diversity breakdown (per Institute for Diversity & Ethics in Sport): 76% of players in NBA are African American. 66% in NFL. 8% in MLB

Does anyone think Ryan Shazier could convert to SS? He ran a ridiculous 40 at his pro day (4.36) and is smaller than Kam Chancellor...

trade down in the 1st (add a 3rd rd pick)

take WR Lee

in 2nd take TE Jenkins

(use two 3rd rd picks to trade into early 2nd rd to take CB Roby)

4th rd: ILB Skov  OLB Hubbard OG/T Brandon Thomas

5th rd: RB/WR/KR De'Anthony Thomas

6th rd: QB Boyd (best player available with other picks)

7th rd: Best player available

would be very happy with this draft

esp. if we can land Lee Jenkins Roby

i keep going back in forth who is a better fit for us Lee or Cooks

Kiper has ODB going 10th to the Lions. Is he worth a top ten pick? It's crazy to  think how different the draft is going to look just because of these extra two weeks.

Doc Rivers is pretty awesome.

Goodell pushed back the draft with the sole purpose of punishing us. This is brutal.

Any way we could see the visit breakdown from last year? Just to see how much of indication it gave for our actual picks

How do people feel about Antonio Allen having to compete for a starting spot. Just keeping true to our motto?  motivation for Bush and Jarrett? Allen not that good?

I'm happy Jarvis Landry visited the Jets.....I hope they draft him in round 2 or 3 . He's the possesion receiver this team needs on 3rd down. I obviously want another WR in round 1 as well.......The dream scenario is drafting both Landry and Beckham and getting BOTH guys from LSU....

We can get a TE in round 3 or 4 and still walk away with a good player....

Or they could grab a CB in round 1 and Landry in round 2 and add a TE in round 3

If there are any takers for a trade down to pick up a 3rd, this is a must.  Whenever I look at the top ~80 players, it amazes me at the quality of player that we could be looking at in the 3rd.  Almost all of the guys projected there could come in and contribute from day 1.  Getting an extra guy could be huge!  I'd love to make this type of deal and then have 2 pass catchers and two stud defenders locked up heading into our 3 4th round picks where we can really take BPA

@Tequila Joe

 one of the best parts of watching the draft is seeing KIper get every pick wrong... it's comedy

OBJ is good, but I doubt he goes anywhere near 10.

@Marvel  Whoever drafts Lee will not have any complaints, this kid is going to be a solid NFL player.

@Marvel

Yeah, Lee's the kind of guy you love to root for. Overcame a lot of s***. Especially at WR, I think that's pretty big. Definitely not a diva.

@williamg1  I doubt they'd do it, but if the Jets trade out of the first round I'm going to have to be sedated.

@MarshRandy  Everyone except Bohanon was either an official visit or, in the case of Winters and Richardson, an on-site visit/workout.

Also, a few of the local visits (including Pantale and Spadola) were UDFAs.

Steven Windeler

@Marvel He's average at best, but improving. If Bush is in the mix then Rex may be thinking of playing a deep safety the way he did the end of last year with Reed. He really hadn't done much of that before, but we had success doing it. I guess it depends on how the corners work out.

williamg1

@Marvel  The "competition" motto is full of crap (see: last year).

I think they're just saying that to push Allen.

MarshRandy
MarshRandy

@Marvel  Well, Allen isn't that good. Not to say he doesn't have potential, but he isn't some proven vet who's locked up his spot

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks  Not saying I wouldn't take Landry (I like his style, kinda worry about separation at the next level), but Kerley is a great 3rd down guy when he's not being covered like the #1.

Tequila Joe

@Marvel @Tequila Joe  I thought it was a bit of a reach too. Especially to the Lions who just signed Tate. It's great to see Mel scramble. Really, it's priceless...I do like Kiper though he's a draft nut like the rest of us.

@Bent @MarshRandy I think he wants to know the amount of each position that visited. I know I would. I'll probably check myself though.

I think Allen miles & Hardin who we signed at the end of the season have upside. Allen had his first full yr to play safety was a Sam lb at South Carolina . Did a great job will get better.Hardin is my sleeper. at Oregon state at6'3 he was a corner moved to safety his senior yr. I wanna see where we're gonna use him.

Landry is open even when he's covered.....just like Anquan Boldin

Landry can do for the Jets what Cotchery used to do in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and this will free up Decker and Kerley from having to do the dirty work in traffic......

Should the Jets decide to draft Landry and also draft either Lee, Cooks, or Beckham they will be a very dangerous team on offense and one of the better WR groups in the NFL within 2 years

I'd be perfectly content to trade 18 for 33 and 65

Nikos Psara Konstantantakopoulos
Nikos Psara Konstantantakopoulos

Tripp was big recruit out of high school in Montana. He was 5'11 safety who grew 4 inches his freshman yr and was moved to olb. A lot of tackles fast strong but very high football iq. Urlacker/ brushi reminds me of. Stood out at senior bowl. I just have a good feeling about him.

@Nikos Psara Konstantantakopoulos

Bpa is very popular and probably the best way to go, where we differ is player ranking.

I like Cooks more than denard, I think Cooks will have Corners up at night praying for safety help, can't jam him because one cut and hes gone, can't play off him too much because he will create after the catch. I just think he's perfect for us. Wouldn't cry if we drafted dennard but I like guys like McGill and P.Gaines a little later.

Love Robinson and Buccannon. Amaro in the second would be great value.

AS for Tripp, I haven't looked into him, could you tell me what you like most about him.

Every receiver who plays in the NFL has a certain amount of toughness.

However guys like Braylon Edwards and Jericho Cotchery could beat press coverage and push around defenders....I wouldn't put Nelson on that level though he did show heart.

Cooks has been compared to Steve Smith. Cooks is young, fast, and cocky and isn't afraid of contact at all. Landry is a guy who is completely fearless and catches everything (often in spectacular fashion)

Marvel
Marvel

@bradysucks

one more thing, stop relegating Cooks to the slot please... and thanks.

Steven Windeler

@bradysucks I want Dennard, Landry, and Niklas. I don't care what order. Even if we have to move to the top of round 3. Too bad we don't have that pick from Tampa.

bradysucks

@williamg1 @bradysucks

Yes....Decker and Landry starting at WR on the same team is slightly different than starting Stephen Hill & Clyde Gates

The Jets haven't had ANY toughness at WR since Cotchery and Braylon in 2010

Decker brings toughness and so would Landry.....so would Cooks

williamg1
williamg1

@bradysucks  Sure, he has the size advantage, but they have the same sort of grit.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@williamg1 @Marvel @bradysucks

Decker is almost 6 foot 4. He's bigger and faster than Cotchery and he's a redzone threat.

I loved Cotchery but Decker is much more dangerous in my opinion

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Marvel @bradysucks

Landry reminds me of a Cotchery/Boldin hybrid.......I love receivers who fight for the ball and who make the tough catches.....That is Landry

Marvel
Marvel

@bradysucks

I'm trying to talk myself into Lee but it's difficult. I'm gonna look at more tape later.

Does Landry remind you of Cotchery at all? (the younger version )

Brendan

@WW85 It would not be insane to pass on Landry no matter what, c'mon guys. Reel it in.

WW85
WW85

@bradysucks If Landry is there rd 2, we'd be insane to pass...regardless of our 1st rd pick. Goodbye Stephen Hill

bradysucks
bradysucks

I love Cooks and Cooks is a dynamic weapon in the slot.

Landry is a guy who makes the tough catches on 3rd down who will take the punishment and always come down with the ball

As I said before I hope the Jets draft OBJ, Cooks, or Lee in round 1 and consider drafting Landry in round 2 or 3. My hunch is Landry is drafted somewhere in round 2. He'd be a steal anywhere in round 3 in my opinion

WW85
WW85

@Marvel Landry would be impossible to pass up in rd 2. even if we need a CB or TE more. The guy catches EVERYTHING

Marvel
Marvel

@bradysucks

Landry is rated very adequately imo, he's late 2nd to mid 3rd.. as he should be.

HE'S solid and I'm a fan.

As for OBJ he's solid too,and I would welcome him, but Cooks is better at pretty much everything, except being taller.

bradysucks
bradysucks

Landry is the most underrated WR in this draft class.

He doesn't wow you with great combine numbers but anybody who watches the game tape on this guy will see a receiver who fights for every ball and regularly makes spectacular catches when blanketed by defenders. Landry was the go to WR at LSU (not Beckham)
