The Jets, desperately in need of a corner help, claimed CB Leon McFadden off waivers from the Cleveland Browns. (Steinberg, Aug. 31)
McFadden was a third round pick in the 2013 draft and played mostly towards the end of last season for the Browns.
The Jets, who cut Dimtri Patterson on Saturday, are thin at corner after several injuries.
Update, 6:30 p.m.: The Jets released cornerback LeQuan Lewis, who was signed as a free agent Aug. 12.
Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.comMcFadden is one of the higher rated young corners to have gotten cut loose in recent days, but any help he might offer is somewhat worrisome considering that Ryan’s old defensive coordinator Mike Pettine cut McFadden himself.
McFadden has the right fluidity and speed to play the position, but can be a bit lacking with his aggression and jamming at the line. It might be for that reason that Pettine was not interested in keeping him around in Cleveland. Having said that, Rex Ryan demonstrated willingness to use zone / Cover-2 schemes last fall when required.
McFadden doesn’t seem like a short-term answer for this team but more of a reclamation project … we’ll find out for sure next weekend.
