Jets could trade up for wide receiver

The Jets could trade up to get a wide receiver (Rapoport, May 6).

New York and the 49ers are two teams who have been talking to teams about moving up in the draft, according to the report.

The team has shown lots of interest in USC WR Marquise Lee, even having a private meeting with the player (TJB, March 13). A few mock drafts also have the Jets taking Lee with their pick (TJB, February 6 and April 24.)

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

We expect the Jets are performing their due-diligence on a contingency basis for now and would only pull the trigger on should certain players (like Odell Beckham or whomever) be available at that given pick. The Eagles are also said to be in the mix to move up for a receiver and with a run likely in the first half of the first round, making such a move could be costly.

In the end we think the Jets will stay put and let the draft come to them. They might not get one of the top six receivers because the players they covet at the No. 18 pick might all be gone by the time it’s their turn to pick, but there are also some very capable receivers that will be available well into the third round who could come in and start.

The difference of course is that at the top of the draft the Jets will be getting the cream of the crop. This draft in particular is filled with talented receivers and if they don’t end up with a “total package player” like Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans, they can get one of the very best of a given type of player … Beckham and Lee (standard body-type receiver with polished route-running and some home-run potential) and Cooks (smaller deep threat) represent the best of those role-receiver types.

I would be happy with Dennard and Amaro with the first 2 picks or Lee or Ebron and Verret, and if Jets can get Moncrief in third I would approve

This 2 week push -back on the draft is not only causing more suspense for fans, it has to be taking a toll on the NFLers-to-be, the GMs, coaches, etc.

I see no good coming from this by the draft in May.

We are over-ready.

My biggest fear is seeing the WRs drop off the board early, the Jets panic and get fleeced by a team to move up a few slots to take Lee or Beckham.

Sammy Watkins is a CAN'T MISS!  He's mix of Andre Johnson physically, Steve Smith competitively with Larry Fitzgerald's hands.

IMO a dream scenario is for the Jets to trade up to 2nd pick with Rams and get WATKINS!

Not positive of how the "trade value chart" works but I wouldn't mind giving the Rams

I would really like to see the plays Marty would come up with for Cooks.   I really hope they draft him.

Only receiver worth trading up for is Watkins. The cost to move into the top 3 is too steep

I wouldn't be shocked to see the Jets take Zack Martin at 18, if he's there. Burn him in at guard for a few years then you have your natural Brick replacement in house. That would certainly have the crowd jeering, but it's all about the trenches. Can take WR and CB in 2nd-4th rounds. Thoughts?

via Kristian Dyer:

“[We are open to] moving up in the draft, although it won’t be for a premium pick, like a top-5 pick,” a team source said. “But if there is a playmaker available and if we can move up [in] that first round to get someone on our draft board that might not be at No. 18, we will do that. But it won’t be a significant jump.”

So, they'd maybe try to jump the Ravens or the Steelers, but I'd be very surprised if they traded into the top 10.

I'll be more than satisfied if we hold pat and draft Marquis Lee with the 18 pick.

Out of all the receivers Marquis when healthy is the closest receiver to Sammy Watkins in the drafts.

Last time I recall a draft was loaded with receivers the Giants pic Nicks at 29th in the 1st and if I recall not such a bad pick. staying put.

I want the Jets to trade with SF. Approximate value between SFs #1+#2=NYJs #1

If this is such a deep draft, why not move back a few picks and add third or a fourth rounder.  I read that the Jets had done a great deal of homework this year.  If so, add picks and get us some quality depth.  I would be shocked, if Idzik moved up.

Stay put Idzik.....

I really don't think the situation at corner is as dire as some people think. We lost Cromartie, one of the worst corners in sports last year. We have a bunch of young coachable hungry guys waiting for their shot. Just because we didn't bring Cro back does not mean that corner is an immediate need. We lost games last year because we didn't have anybody, literally nobody, besides Kerley to take the pressure off Geno. Thats the only dire situation I see with this roster. We need some damn playmakers.

I don't see the value in moving up to pick a Beckham, who may be better than Cooks or Lee, but not significantly better.

The same for any of the DB's that are presumably under consideration.  The best move seems to be to sit at 18. Does anyone really hate the idea of winding up with Cooks, Lee, Dennard, Fuller, etc? In fact, I would consider trading down a little (22-24) picking up another pick and winding up with someone on the same menu as at 18.

Am I missing something, couldn't the Jets stay at 18 or move down to get Lee?

Who comes up with these topic's? I haven't seen any moc draft where Marqise Lee is gone before 18? Frankly, between Beckham,Cooks and Lee, one of them will be there if we even go WR. Unfortunately, as Izzy chose to ignore the glaring hole at corner, we will probably go corner if available anyway so it probably wont be until the 2nd round that we get the best WR left.

@Steven Windeler

I love that idea . The was rumars about a trade with Denver also.

@harvlis Every NFL team does a 'great deal of homework'. Despite all the hype about who puts more work in, I don't think anyone in the end really outworks anyone else. It's talent evaluation that's key. In about six months, we'll have answers about Idzik's skill in that regard. I just hope they keep the emotional side of Rex Ryan out of the draft room. John I, show the big fella who's boss.

@harvlis  I think the best GMs move both up and down depending on their board. We also have 3 #4's.

@Hoz  Don't speak in absolutes. If Oakland's willing to take 18 + our 6th for 5, you're gonna say no?

@buddyryan Move down to 30 and take the BPA. Then you can get Adams at 61 besides.

We can still use our own 2nd, and trade back up into the 2nd again with all our lower picks. Then we can take Roby, and Niklas, or whoever you'd want

No matter how you look at it the real value in this draft is in the 2nd round.

@Ron Alexander  I agree Ron it has to be a CB because of IzDICK's failure in free agency

boomer

@Ron Alexander  We have to CBs on the roster who were week 1 starters in 2013, Milliner and Patterson and a guy who PFF ranked as the top CB in the NFL during the 2013 pre-season, Walls.  Not exactly the black hole of Calcutta.

johnsec125

@Ron Alexander i think he means that if they go corner with #1, they will try and move up from their #2 to get lee before he is gone.

@a57se @Stanley Bostitch

That's OK well just keep all those good receivers sitting on the side lines wile the Jets eat up the clock.. Adding another Nick Mangold between the D-Brick and Mangold  its crunch time...

harvlis

@jenkins @harvlis Idzik has showed that he is a conservative GM.  I doubt, after the way he has handled free agency, that he would give up picks to move up in this draft.

@Brent J I think he said we don't need a corner. Seems you couldn't see that through all those tears.

@johnsec125 @Ron Alexander  if thats the case im not sure how i feel about it. we have a traded back into the first would likey cost us at least our second third and probably one of our 4ths. we have such a limited about of early round picks. it seems like a waste in whats regarded as a very deep draft. id rather stay in the second and try and get robinson from penn.

@a57se @bob

Ha ha  We still have more pics I just see a lot of needs being filled..Truthfully I'll be happy this draft seeng us getting needs filled and getting better. Of course you now I love line men...But I'll be cool and happy whoever we get.. thinking its all good.

Marcus Armstrong

@rkymtnjet @Marcus Armstrong @Hoz  I'm not saying it's going to be proposed, because obviously it's absurd. My point is that...

1. You would accept that trade

2. Therefore, trading up/down is a matter of value, not a matter of principle

3. As such, absolute statements on staying put, trading up, or trading down, are not valid.

rkymtnjet
rkymtnjet

@Marcus Armstrong @rkymtnjet @Hoz Your analogy is comical at best.

I'm not against trading up, but even suggesting the 18th pick and a 6th rounder for the 5th overall pick is a possibility, is absurd.

@Steven Windeler @Brent J  try again, Ron Alexander "... Unfortunately, as Izzy chose to ignore the glaring hole at corner, we will probably go corner if available anyway so it probably wont be until the 2nd round that we get the best WR left."
