Jets cut Stephen Hill

The Jets cut 2012 second round pick Stephen Hill on Saturday.

Hill had 45 catches and 594 receiving in two years. The Georgia Tech product, who played in the triple-option in college, never harnessed his speed.

Roster cuts can be found here.

Update 12:10 p.m.: The Jets have also cut RB Alex Green, TE Chris Pantale and DE Zach Thompson.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

A month ago it seemed unlikely that the Jets would give up before the season on Stephen Hill but while the public comments from the coaches were positive, the whisper campaign started in earnest when it was learned that the Jets had tried to trade Hill earlier this offseason.  At this point the release of their former second rounder is a much softer blow.

In retrospect, Hill seemed to know that his time with the team was drawing short.  He seemed more agitated on the field during camp and in the preseason games in 2014.

It might be that Stephen Hill will go on and be successful elsewhere in an offense with a more established quarterback, but just like Mark Sanchez it wasn’t working with the Jets and time might not have fixed whatever ailed the situation when it came to the Jets.

When can teams go for players cut by other teams?

Patterson cut

@ConnieScouts: Hurt, not playing well, disappearing, and calling your bosses liars is not a recipe to make a team.

Hill got cut because he has poor hands and even worse instincts. That's the whole story.

Stevie Johnson getting cut. Would love to have him on the Jets when we play Revis and the Pats

Rex must have wanted a defensive player instead of drafting Hill. He never wanted him, and now is happy to cut him. Rex only thinks offensive players are necessary because the defense has to play against someone.

Patterson basically called Idjit a liar and he's still on the team. Chances of me doing the same to the CEO while still maintaining my position? Zero point zero.

Phillip Adams, Kelvin Hayden, Leon McFadden and Dominique Franks released.  None strike excitement as additions to the secondary.

Man, that's a shame they cut Pantale. He showed more in games than Sudfeld has.

Rumors out west saying stevie Johnson might get cut by 49ers......

Chargers released Vincent Brown, wonder if he's worth a look.

OLB Antwan Barnes, who is rehabbing from a torn ACL last season and currently does not count against the roster limit will be placed on the PUP list to start the season, according to a source

Wondering if saints will cut nick toon or Brandon Coleman. ....I wish hill had stuck but I'm sure the coaching staff saw enough to think it wasn't working.. tough break

@a57se I don't at all.  Regardless of who was at QB, all Hill needed to do was improve at being an NFL receiver, and do well with the lot he was given.  No one was asking him to be a ProBowler with the QB play they had.  But he didn't do a good enough job, period.  Hill (or his agent) has no one to blame but Hill.

gbrownn

He's just as delusional as his client. Hill sucked and his agent isn't doing him any favors by publicly bad mouthing his former team.

@a57se IMO, if you don't know how to catch the football in the NFL as a WR no one owes you a roster spot, and you should find another profession.

@a57se

and I agree with John Idzik and Rex (SHOCK)

Getting rid of Hill was the RIGHT MOVE

Agreed.  I do think they threw in the towel a year too early, given the circumstances he came into the league.  Not saying he should have made the roster for the whole season, but should have lasted at least 6 games.

@carlhungus wow, I was watching some of his highlights the guy has moves and is as tough as nails, someone Rex would like

I wish Hill didn't have boxing gloves for hands.

It is different when the other team's defensive backs are keying on you. Then you must be doing something right. Didn't you read my argument with juunit yesterday about Gholston? The other team knows you (Stephen Hill) are a consistent deep threat. Then it would behoove them to take you out of the plans. They don't want to get hurt by you so they put their best cornerback against you (Hill) so that you have no chance to get open and if you do like Hill did then they will toy with your quarterback unless your quarterback can man up and beat them head on. And if they don't have their best cornerback on you then they will have two defenders on each level of their defense to take the deep threat away. This is where the jets failed.

@gbrownn

 His agent has a point gbrownn. Who was the quarterback for the jets again?!!

 There lies the problem.

As an NFL receiver not only should you catch the football but you should be AWESOME at catching the football because that is literally your job description.

Many teams give jobs to guys who drop passes and that is a shame. Teams often fall in love with speed and size and ignore the most important part of a receivers job description which is CATCH THE BALL CONSISTENTLY

Not sure....might be salary related. ..they drafted Ellington and he has looked good in preseason...they drafted a young kid last year and Crabtree is finally healthy. ...

Hahaha

You just pissed off tsjc68 and Harold who both think Hill has good hands !!!

Lol

It's kind of like saying Mark Sanchez has good decision making skills and not admitting that turnovers happen when you make awful decisions

@carlhungus He was getting paid $4mil with no dead money, so maybe that was it. I'd be okay with signing him for less than that.

Phins just cut Sam Brenner...above avg Utility OL and only 24 yrs old.....absolutely the Jets should take a good look at him!!!

The phins, who pulled 5 guys off the street for an ol this year cut a 24 yr old old and you think we should pick him up eh? Um....let's see....NO......NEXT!

I am waiting for the Fins to sign Hill and then watch Stephen Hill burn Kyle Wilson for a deep TD against the Jets....

That would be humorous somehow.

Some people here would say it is proof the Jets blew it by releasing Hill and other people who are AWARE will realize that it's Kyle Wilson

Would be an interesting day on this blog if this scenario ever happens

Hill will still have a terrible season but he could still look okay against some of the Jets cb's in their current state

Hanknaples
Hanknaples

@carlhungus

There is soooo much wrong with your comment I will only tell you that if you at least casually saw the Phins you would see a Young O Lineman holding various positions the OL (ie hot mess) together last year,,,,his FIRST year !!!

Hanknaples

@bradysucks

" I am waiting for the Fins to sign Hill and then..."

There's a better chance of me being picked up by the Phins than Hill!1

Not for nothing but take a look at their WR Corps!!

It is ALWAYS good to have your friends close but your enemies closer !!

@bradysucks I'll never understand the pleasure you take in coming up with hypotheticals that would make the Jets look bad if they were true.

carlhungus

And they have hot garbage now and they still cut him.....guess he must not have been holding it together all that well.....

bradysucks
bradysucks

It would be ironic if Hill burned Kyle Wilson for a TD but releasing Hill won't make the Jets look bad because wherever he goes Hill still has to face guys like Verner, Revis, Cromartie, Peterson, Sherman etc....

Jets made the right move

@Lloyd Jay Reife @__fense @bradysucks But it's not schadenfreude, because that would imply that he's taking pleasure in the misfortune of someone else. He's a Jets fan, but he wants the Jets toose for some reason.
