Jets expected to pick up fifth-year on Wilkerson

The Jets are expected to pick up Mo Wilkerson’s fifth-year option (Mehta).

As part of the collective bargaining agreement, all players signed in 2011 signed four-year deals with an option for a fifth year. Wilkerson is entering his fourth year in the league.

The team is also talking to Wilkerson about a long-term deal, but nothing has come of that yet.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

There’s a fine line between abiding by the league-set structures for teams to benefit from initial rookie contracts and appeasing super stars to avoid ugly contract standoffs as we have recently seen between the Jets and Darrelle Revis.

Re-doing Wilkerson’s deal early would be seen as a sign of good will between the team and the player, but with two years left under control the Jets might not be in a rush to get a deal done.

We’re sure given the choice, Wilkerson would rather make more than less, but seems reasonable enough to know that his massive payday is coming if he focuses on his day job first and foremost.

The Jets have never been a team that hoards cap space, so if the Jets are moving slowly on re-doing Wilkerson’s deal, then one would hope the money they might otherwise allocate there will be utilized wisely elsewhere in the myriad of holes and depth issues the team has as we enter the free agency.

Why dont we just get this deal done already, we know we're going to pay him so what are we waiting for? Could we be waiting until after free agency to pay him so that we're more aware of our spending for this year and the next couple of years? I don't understand exactly what we're waiting for, but Im excited to see this group (Wilk, Shell, Copl, Snacks, Douz & Ellis) back again after their breakout year last year. I think they're going to work extra hard to be the best with all the confidence they have and the talent. "Sons Of Anarchy" Season 2 ladies and gentleman.

If the team does extend Wilkerson, that probably means Sheldon Richardson's career is over as a Jet.

@Mike Milea  He's still under his rookie deal, so if you extend him now and pay him full whack then you're just throwing away a year of having him on a value deal.  It would basically be $10m down the toilet unnecessarily.

In practice, if a deal was to get done now, it would take into account the fact that the Jets effectively control his rights for another three years.  From Wilkerson's perspective, he could well be better off having another dominant season this year and ending the season with all the leverage.

For him it could be the difference between a  $10m deal and a $15m deal.  Not worth surrendering just so you can get a few million as a pay bump now.

That's Wilkerson's choice - a full-value deal next year or a more team friendly deal now.  For the team, there really is no choice.  As the article points out, they could still revisit talks, but don't expect anything until Watt is dealt with by Houston.

@jroc  Just this year, but then he will be a restricted free agent.
