Jets ink Nick Folk to multiyear deal

The Jets have announced they have signed Nick Folk to a multiyear deal (Jets, March 11).

Folk’s deal is worth $4.1 million guaranteed over four years. His 2014 cap hit is $3.6 million (Corry, March 11).

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Pardon us, but this seems an odd time to be worrying about Nick Folk. Amidst players flying off the shelves all around the league this seems like the last thing that they needed to address right now … couldn’t they backburner Folk for a few days?

Whatever. We are happy that the Jets did this deal even if it did come in the first hour of free agency with almost $40 million in cap space. Based on Folk’s kicks for the Jets over the last few years this was a deal he deserved and this year was the right time to do it. It’s just something that might have waited a day or two.

Eh, I doubt they were worried about getting this done now - it was just likely in the works and happened to get finalized now.

a y ear ago Howard was a bum. We traded our bum for St Louis bum. It happened to work out for us. I wouldn't pay Howard big money on a long term deal, he could just as easily slip back to bum

On Zach Strief by PFF:  " He might not be the flashiest of players but Zach Strief (+26.5) continues to deliver the goods at right tackle. A productive pass blocker, you might like to see a man of his size get more push in the run game but he’s a an extremely dependable tackle."

Sweet! Glad Folk will be with the team for a few more years!

Idzik knows what he is doing, he saw his former organization win a Superbowl and he knows what blueprint they used, iim sure he is trying to do the same thing with the Jets.

@bob  Revis may have to pay NYJ RB John Griffin for #24.

@a57se  Ugh. Last thing we need is to bring in Miles Austin as our marquee WR haul. He's a cheap flier at best, really cant be counted on.

@a57se  if he's cheap then sure, he could work out if he can stay healthy

The cowboys also released Demarcus Ware. Wouldn't mind signing Ware and Revis to add to this defense and then re-signing Ed Reed...

Won't happen but would be cool

I like Austin....but we should have signed him when we had the chance years ago. He is a step slower now... but still an upgrade for the Jets

@maynardfan @bob  Actually while Griffin was on IR, they gave #24 to Darius Reynaud.  Griffin is an ERFA but if he comes back, that number is certainly available.

@Brendan @greggreen  sounds like it could be a good move  if Howard decides to go sign with some other team

Brendan

@greggreen I know, which I admitted in my comment. The point was there probably is much drop-off, if any, between the two players. You can probably get Strief for cheaper than you could Howard right now, also.

@Brendan @mario3  he might grade out better then howard but that doesn't mean the line will play better with him

Brendan
Brendan

@mario3 He's been on the Saints, so obviously having Brees behind him benefits him quite a bit, but he's been a solid starter for a few years now. To put it in perspective, his PFF grade was +25.5 points higher than Howards. Like I said, Brees, so that has to be weighed into it, but it's obvious he could at least be a comparable starter to Howard, possibly an improvement.

@Brendan @greggreen  im aware but 31 in football is pretty old. add that to the fact that a new element will ultimately weaken the line. even if strief grades out  better then howard

@a57se I could go into detail if you'd like. But when factoring in everything (ability, skillset, scheme fit, etc.) I would much rather take Ware on than Peppers. They'll end up with neither, so it's moot.

@bob @phily kay  that may be true, on both ends, but rex is at best #3 decision maker on the jets, and apparently the #1 decision maker (thatd be woody) wants nothing to do with revis anymore, or so they say
