Jets Readying to Free Up $27 Million in Cap Room

Under the weather this week … blech … sorry for the lack of updates, we’ll try and remedy that in the coming days ahead … but this flu just keeps hanging on …

Anway, looks like the Jets are ready to cut some dead weight in the coming weeks.

Sources told the Daily News Thursday that Gang Green’s plan is to cut the loquacious linebacker, along with Calvin Pace — another mainstay of the linebacking corps — and offensive tackle Jason Smith in the coming weeks before free agency begins March 12. The moves would save the Jets $27.7 million in cap space for next season.

I don’t think it’s anything that many of us didn’t already expect.  Bart Scott had said he’d be willing to take a paycut, but it sounds like the Jets are looking for a clean break from his current contract.  Whether Smith, or Scott or Pace returns, my guess is that the best they could garner would be a veteran minimum contract from the Jets.  From the article, it sounds as if the Jets are ready to let DeMario Davis assume a larger role in 2012.   Davis didn’t have any exceptional moments for the Jets in 2012, but the team drafted him to be ready for 2013 … with a full offseason program and a little added weight, he could be a good pairing with David Harris.
