Jets receiver Pro Day tour continues; Mornhinweg ‘all over’ Brandin Cooks

Jets OC Marty Mornhinweg attended the Oregon State Pro Day on Friday to take a long look at potential first round receiver Brandin Cooks.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Cooks ranks 23rd in the Scouts, Inc. top 32 which would put him in the mix for the Jets with that 18th pick as player valuations tend to slide between now and the draft.  The Jets have been very intently looking at many of the top receivers so far, attending Pro Days all over the country.  Just this week the team had a private meeting with Marquise Lee and in the past few weeks they had their braintrust attend Sammy Watkins pro day among others.

The Jets are looking very hard at adding a receiver with their first or second round pick and that is the right move.  While they are serious about adding talent via free agency, they need a cornerstone receiver to build this skill group around for the next 5-10 years and there’s no time like the present to find such a player as it often takes at least two years to get them fully productive.

"While they are serious about adding talent via free agency, ...."

What evidence do you have to support that introductory clause? They've replaced free agents with free agents but I see no evidence to support the contention that they are serious about adding talent.

They can be "all over" whoever they want...if Mr "Slow-play, No play" John Idzik doesn't get some veterans in here to upgrade or stabilize one of our many holes on BOTH sides of the ball, we are going to be a mistake prone team waiting for a bunch of young guys to develop...

I think Id be in a straight jacket if I were Rex Ryan right now...Id want answers from somebody

Wondering what's up with Thurmond... Why haven't we shown any interest with him? With him oposite Dee plus drafting somebody early - We r set and panic button can go to rest.

I wonder what Rex is thinking? He might be saying to himself, "OMABs!"

Brendan is going to have a major project in damage control tomorrow, lol  I am sure he will be up to the task, OMABs

God I hope woody gives Rex a pass if Idzik doesn't pick this up

It could be worse, we are doing stugotz but at least they are not destroying the team. Look at poor Cam Newton, they wiped out his entire wr core!!!!          http://tinyurl.com/nxv64gc

While Idzik had a pass last season, if he doesn't at least get 9 wins this season, he will take some heat. He could use Rex as the scapegoat, but Idzik will still be under attack. NY has a very low tolerance.

Don't know if this is true, my son just told me the Giants are really making a play for DRC.

We will get our marble bags kicked in by the Broncos and Pats. They are both having a killer off season Even the Billdos and phins are having a good off season.

@Jeff E. Guy  It is more likely they wann'a add more FA than what u r suggesting. Suggesting they r not serious about adding talent is just propostrous

@Ed D  I went outside for a sec after this post of yours... Wow! The sky were not falling. It's only 5 days of FA. Relax dude...

@tal8  because he signed with the Giants who had roughly 25% of the cap space we had!

@jake100 Kid WORKS for the Jets, even if they dont pay him. If the kid rips Tanny, Sparano or any assortment of ex-Jet personnel now, just remember at one point he was defending them religiously when they were here...according to him the Jets philosophy is infallible or can be attributed to a factor which was out of their control or could happen to anyone (i.e Mark Sanchez sucking)

It appears Idzik's plan is to build through the draft and be highly selective with the free agents he brings in.

Add Jarred Allen & James Jones

@mustang66  So you think we are the worst team in the league? R u kidding me right now?!

Ron Alexander

@tal8 @Jeff E. Guy  Why would you say that? What has this guy with his mystical plan done to impress anyone so far? Not spend money? Hey, as a life long Met and Jet fan I'm beginning to wonder if Idzik thinks he's working for Fred & Jeff Wilpon? Lets face it, Idzik  must have gone to the Sandy Alderson school of inactivity.Last night the Giants who have 25% of the cap space we do signed the corner who replaced Browner in Seattle (Thurmond) and a pretty good safety from K.C. Demps while we sit by and count our money.Sorry dude but between his mediocre draft last spring and his "preposterous" performance so far in F/A I am not a fan of this clown!

Ed D
Ed D

Other contending teams went out and felt a need to get some of the players on the market....Seattle spent big last year...so did Denver....Denver and new England are in a cold war right now...idzik was either unprepared for how fast the market would move, is just incompetent, or its woody who is purring the kabash on our level of activities... any or all the aforementioned is completely unacceptable

Guy has been inactive with a ton of cap room..

@jake100 @Kyle Ely If he gets Chris Clemons, Corey Wotton, DRC and drafts Cook, and Niklas with the first 2 picks we should be ok but he needs to get going

tal8

@bradysucks  I think for him it is all up to value vs. cost. If the cost does represent the value he is evaluating... He won't make the deal. That is why DRC has not signed. He probably wanted to much money or too many years. But I agree with u completely. He would like to ideally build through the draft.

Ron Alexander
Ron Alexander

@Ed D @Ron Alexander @tal8  Ed, I've been arguing with guys here forever. A lot of the guys think  what ever team management dictates is fine. Kind of like when Rex blurted out what a great draft we just had because we got 5 starters out of it. Yeah right,  Brian Winters should have been on somebody's practice squad, and Oday Oboushi and Will Campbell should have never been drafted much less kept on the active roster all season. And don't get me started about that fullback we drafted in the 7th round who is so slow he can't block on running plays because the running back beats him to the hole.Geez, the guy runs a 4.9 at last years combine so we draft him?O-linemen today post better 40 times than he did.

Ed D
Ed D

@Ron Alexander @Ed D@tal8Ron, I was refering to tal on that one

John Idzik strikes me as the kind of guy who says "you cant lose what you dont put in the middle of the table"...problem is  you can't win it either

Relying on getting lucky in the draft late and with bargain based free agents is not a strategy, its just hope

We stay inactive and the team stinks this year and goes backwards, Woody should fire Idzik and not Rex

What he has done to this point with the money we have available, not to mention what wed have if Sanchez gets the boot, is unimpressive and unacceptable to me...even if the top tier guys want to go to Denver or New England, the second tier depth are falling and we can CLEARLY afford them

Im just not impressed with this guy

Ron Alexander
Ron Alexander

@Ed D @tal8  Dude, i agree 100% with everything you said! You didn't ruin my day, you made my day! personally, about the only thing he's done so far that I do agree with is letting Cro and Austin Howard walk! neither of them are winning players as Howard was ranked near the bottom of RT's and Cro's play has been disappointing due to his reliance on his physical talents rather them employing proper technique. There is no way anybody's gonna convince me we would not be a better team with Byrd and Allen at safety and Milliner and  A.Verner at the corners plus G.Schwarta at one of the guard spots. This mystical "Idzik plan is a lot of nonsense as you are right that at this point he has done absolutely nothing to inspire all the "zen" like confidence I read here! (unless your impressed with his so-called great draft last year that produced one stud(Richardson),4 dud's(Winters,Oboushie,Campbell & Bohannon) and two maybe's(Geno-Milliner)?

Ed D
Ed D

@tal8 @Ed DMay I remind you we were 8-8 last season with a head coach who has a "win now" contract. Our two biggest rivals were actively adding veteran talent from day one. So We cant GO BACKWARDS bro. San Diego got the 6th spot ONE GAME better than us. I'm not implying we are Super Bowl contenders, you inferred that yourself. But Miami, the Giants, the Vikings, the Bucs are all teams who were busy as hell. The point was that teams who have won, who will win in the future are spending with LESS CAP SPACE than us. So the "Idzik has plan" is great, but he's not all knowing, all powerful and one can not help but question when this guy is going to get going? Idzik has done NOTHING in this league to this point to warrant unabashed support

BTW  and at NO POINT did I say we had to add Ware, Peppers or anyone over 30...Im talking about the litany of reasonably priced players off the board that could help our team. We let our best corner go and our secondary was putrid at times: like 20 DBs have been signed in the first 48 hours and you mean to tell me Mr Idzik couldn't have reached down and found an upgrade there, cause a bunch of other well run winning organizations did. Please save citing a guy like Talibs injuries or Byrd's price tag, pointing out one weakness in a guy is not a reason not to sign him

Sorry if I ruined your day because Im not happy with the Jets activity since the league year opened

@Ed D  Thank you Ed, finally a voice of reason among'st the unrelenting overly zealous diehard loyalist's. One of the things I like about the people who post here is that like me they love their Jets.Thats great, we have that in common! The problem is anytime some one says anything to rock the boat like you just did, they get jumped on by the "loyalist's! Why ?, A great many of us are long time season ticket holders (not to mention PSL owners.) As such we have significant investment both emotionally and financially so if  you or i have a beef about how or why the team chooses to do business should we not have the opportunity to voice our frustration in an open forum like this?

tal8
tal8

@Ed D  May I remind u we're not a contending team. We are not few pieces away from winning the AFC East or going to the play-offs. We have huge holes to fill still. So throwing money at people who are old (Peppers, Ware or Smith) or greedy (Revis, DRC and many more)... Will get us only to where we got with Tanny. 6-10 and no money in the bank. There're months of FA left and lots of talent still o/b. Relax.........

Pat d

So DRC didn't 't sign with the Giants or something

tal8

@Pat d  I don't think Lee is a 1st rd talent... Hasn't been like that since 2012 combine & pro day included.

Pat d
Pat d

People may like Cooks or ODB but Lee is superior. Lee had an injury so you won 't take him even if a superior talent.

Pat d
Pat d

If Watkins, Evans or Lee is there at 18 they would be BPA. Cooks at 18, I don 't think do. Maybe move back and get him later in first round. But if the Jets can get Evans or Lee they have to get them. Definitely before Cooks.

Kirk Michael
Kirk Michael

@Pat d Lee's injury and speed I prefer to avoid him , I like ODB AT 18. Then  wth all our pics trade a couple to move up for amaro after that. can mix it up more then ebron n more mass to him, TTech guys pass catchers usually produce in the league.

Pat d
Pat d

Watkins, Evans and Lee are by far the best WRs in this draft. Cooks in round 2 is fine but not at 18.

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@Pat d  The draft is huge but we need a few key vets to be competitive THIS season, OG, two more weapons on offense and a solid #2 CB.

The 3 main areas that concern me, oline, secondary and lack of fire power on offense.

Kyle Ely

@Pat d No I am on Cook's bandwagon get the speeder in here
