Jets release Ford, 5 others

The New York Jets released six players on Sunday morning to get the roster down to 75.

WRs Jacoby Ford and Michael Campbell were released as was corner Ras-I Dowling. The Jets also released TE Colin Anderson, FB Chad Young and DE Anthony Grady.

Ford was a free agent pickup from Oakland in March and Dowling is a former second round pick of the Patriots.

The Jets had to get down to 75 players by Tuesday. The next cutdown is the final 53-man roster on Saturday.

Ford is the biggest name here.  Brought in from the Raiders to compete for the team’s kick returner duties, Ford had an up and down camp.  While he shone without pads during the early part of the preseason, Ford tended to show concentration lapses and poor hands at times.  Both problems came back to Ford on Friday night against the Giants.  Ford muffed a punt and was also flagged for a rare offensive pass interference penalty.  Saalim Hakim seems the likely candidate to replace Ford as the team’s top returner, but Clyde Gates and Jalen Saunders might also lay claim to the role.  Also, don’t rule out the possibility that the Jets might not yet have the returner on their roster depending on who else gets cut in coming days.

Dowling shone during spring practices, but was unable to bring the same consistency to the Jets over the preseason.  With the state that the Jets secondary is in, that the Jets were willing to move on from Dowling shows how bad it might have gotten.

Young was raw, but was the roster’s only real “thumper” candidate as a blocking back.  Between the pass-first tight ends and fullback Tommy Bohannon, the Jets must feel confident in their line’s run blocking without much help from the FB/TE group.

Wow, Vick to start Thursday but "won't be in there long".

I got that one wrong.

Apparently, Patterson has gone AWOL. Hasn't returned any team messages as well as missing Friday's game.

@Paul Samuels How unlucky can he be eh? Schotty ruined his career I think and now he's getting reunited, I would laugh but I feel bad for the guy, he did some good things here, I mean if he was a total scrub I doubt we would have made it to 2 straight AFC Championships. I hope he manages somehow to get out of it, perhaps being a backup for Seatle to reunite with Pete Carrol, I wish all ex jets the best accept for Revis..lol

@levi A weird one this because yesterday they announced his ACL was not torn and now they've decided it is.

@levi Sanchez/Schotty reunion?

@drjreefer Yeah because the embarrassment about oversleeping lasts 48 hours...

Mildly surprised.   Probably a series or two w/starters before we see Simms and Boyd.

Maybe he discovered the cure for cancer and is busy testing the new medicine.

@Bent @levi

He is on the last year of his rookie contract, yes?

@Bent  Thats what I was thinking.

@a57se @Bent I think there's more of an argument for that here than there was with the Sanchez injury...but the "Rex has learned nothing from last time" comments will be unbearable.

Doubt Kelly would do that at this late stage.  He, like Rex, have one of the best back-up QB situations in the league.   Don't see him taking that kind of chance should Foles go down.

@levi @Bent

That would be an awfully quick end to Sanchez's resurgence.

@Bent @a57se

Chgip Kelly already said his n0. 1 and 2 were not playing in the game...I don't see any reason for Vick to be out there.

Same here, which is why I wasn't expecting Vick to see time, either.  Why risk it?  What's to be gained?   I would have thought would have learned his lesson year w/Sanchez.

@hazard2012 @levi @Bent He did discuss it hypothetically last week and said it would depend what he got offered.

Bent

@juunit @levi @Bent I'm sure he'd rather start and struggle than sit on the bench behind Foles all year.

@a57se @Bent Guess Rex feels he needs more reps to stay sharp since he basically only had one drive in game three.

Hopefully a series or two of low risk quick passes and then a quick hook.

Hadn't heard that.   Under circumstances, with Rams season on line, St.L might offer quite a lot.   Should be interesting.

Maybe Idzik should dangle Vick for starting CB?

Maybe Vick just plays 1 series so the fans can salute him or maybe just one play?

Bent

@hazard2012 @Bent @levi He'll get traded for a 2nd or something and Idzik will be blasted for cutting a potential asset.

Bent

@WW85 Won't he get booed?

Not sure Idzik would be criticized.   For fixing the most glaring weakness --- getting worse by the day --- on the team?

My concern is less losing Vick, but who do they have who could solve the CB problem?   Janoris Jenkins?   Rookie Roberson?

Depends.  Milliner, Patterson, Walls, Wilson, Walls, Allen, Lankster could all be healthy on opening day.  Even if you're missing a couple of those, that's still a deep enough group.

@hazard2012 @juunit @a57se @Bent @levi

Milliner definitely looked better. So as long as he's healthy, we should be golden. Whoever CB2 is won't have to do much to outplay Cro from last year. He was literally bottom 5 in the entire NFL.

Dee should---should---be better, hopefully picking up where he left off...providing he can stay on the field and avoid a sophomore slump.   Lots of ifs.  And it goes downhill fast from there, no matter what name you pencil in.
