Jets release Hayden Smith

The Jets have released Hayden Smith, the team announced.

Smith signed with the Jets in April 2012 and was waived in August of that year. He signed with the practice squad the next day, and was promoted to the active roster in late October.

Smith made one NFL reception for 16 yards in 2012.

A former Rugby Union player, Hayden Smith was one of the underdog stories for this team and his athleticism and smarts seemed like a potential fit to translate to the NFL game.  The Jets might consider bringing him back for the practice squad, as he is eligible, but cutting him now might be a move to allow him some time to find another team before the next flood of players comes.

Smith was the beneficiary of some opportunities in 2012 with the Jets and looked like a potential player to make the team this year after a solid spring, but the addition of Kellen Winslow Jr. seemed to put him on the bubble and Konrad Reuland’s familiarity with the game as well as his getting a full offseason with the team made it hard for Smith to distinguish himself.  We wish Smith the best as he looks for a spot with a new team.
