Jets release suspended CB Dimitri Patterson

The Jets have announced that they have cut veteran cornerback Dimitri Patterson on Saturday ahead of the 4PM deadline to cut the roster down to53. (PFT, Aug. 30)

Patterson was suspended by the Jets after going AWOL before last week’s third preseason game.  Patterson talked with the team on Sunday after two days unexcused absence and the team suspended Patterson until September 1st.  Patterson obviously didn’t make it that far, being cut two days before his suspension was lifted.

Patterson saw action in just one preseason game and looked outclassed by Colts QB Andrew Luck and TY Hilton before being injured during the game.  Patterson never saw the preseason field since.

Patterson had signed signed a one-year deal worth $3 million with the Jets back in March that included a $1 million signing bonus.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

If the Jets had any doubt about cutting Patterson, it was likely removed Thursday when the cornerback released his ludicrous statement to ESPN’s Josina Anderson calling the team liars, obviously around the Jets normal protocol for players interacting with the media.

Beyond his not showing up for work and his bad judgement in making public statements, Patterson looked bad on the field — he was burned multiple times during the first half against the Colts but it wasn’t anything that wasn’t already taking place routinely on the Jets practice field during training camp.

I fully expect players like Darrin Walls, Ellis Lankster and others to be able to step into the gap while Dee Milliner heals up for the season.  It might not be pretty, but I do think the Jets can get the job done thanks to good depth at safety.  It is fair to be concerned about the players the Jets have left on the roster, but we expect the Jets to be active on the waiver / free agent market between now and Tuesday when practices begin in earnest for their matchup next weekend against the Raiders.

I heard David Carr the rookie is starting for the Radiers which will help us out a little.

Idzik hire RON ALEXANDER right now as a scout. He knows what draft picks will work out and which will not based on watching about 100 snaps.

Anybody the Jets get at CB on the waiver will be far better than that punk Patterson... I hope they get the million back too!

Hopefully Miles makes the PS, I was pulling for him myself.

So I been wanting the jets to cut josh bush since the moment they drafted him. Rontez miles is a better deep safety, better takler, better hitter, better special teams player, and is actually entertaining to watch. Y are they keeping this guy around

Looks like Idzik has made the Jets a very young team. I like  52 out of 53, just want another CB.

Reilly is just like McIntyre! But with way more versatility and younger

Jets keep 10 of 12 draft picks. How many will be redshirts and be inactive all year like Aboushi and Campbell last year? #nyj

Idzik doesn't like admitting mistakes. No regrets.

Glad they made this cut, hopefully cutting him also cut the drama in the locker room. Looking forward to see if they pickup a CB. I'd take Champ Bailey even if its for only a year. With our defense a good CB would help us make the playoffs.

Idzik has had 18 draft picks since he's been here, and only cut 3 of them.

I guess he's nailed the draft.

@bradysucks I think champ makes a lot of sense

@williamg1

 not fair at all. Patterson is gone, Goodson, we have Geno insurance

Nothing wrong with giving a rook more than ONE CAMP to get it.

Yeah why not bring in another saavy veteran to hold down the fort. He may even thrive in Rex's defense

@ron jones definitely felt like miles needs to be on the active roster and josh bush should be a active free agent

His first step and smart play makes up for that

@Marvel_ @williamg1 There is if they were over dfafted in the first place! And they stink! Hows the human penalty machine Aboushi and Will Campbell looking so far?

williamg1

@Marvel_ @williamg1 Both he held on to, way too long. Goodson only got cut when he refused to show up to practice, just like Patterson.

I agree he's no stranger to being on an island

@dante kaalund

Disagreed. He won't play many snaps outside of STs this year because he gets pushed around too much.

@Ron Alexander

Campbell is cut and Aboushi is looking pretty good actually. You aren't suggesting every picks works out right? the draft is a total crap shoot. Even in the 1st rd. those guys were late rd picks.

Aboshi looks good and will Campbell well let's say needs improvement

Due process baby
!

dante kaalund
dante kaalund

@williamg1 I think he can set the edge but as pointed out he can get pushed around at the point of attack, however he takes proper angles enough to push the play back inside

dante kaalund
dante kaalund

Valid point! But even tho he gets pushed around, he can play inside, outside, and hands in dirt, and a much better cover guy. #versility

@juunit

Also they signed Babin and Barnes is coming back. With them plus Coples and Pace no one else is getting a lot of reps

@BDarc23 i know Rex says Aboushi has looked good but my eyes and the fact that he has committed more penalty's than anybody else on the roster(with the possible exception of Winters)tells me he has looked awful!

Ron Alexander
Ron Alexander

@dante kaalund Aboushi looks good? Are you kidding? You think a guy who commits as many penalty's as guys he actually blocks looks good? Are you a Patriots fan? Oh, and Campbell was cut!

@Marvel_

Due process relates to a court of law. If that was applicable, teams would only be able to discipline guys only after they are found guilty by a court (see: Ray Rice).

williamg1
williamg1

@dante kaalund Look at the OLBers in Rex's defense. They've always been massive guys who are stout. Reilly's angles won't matter much, when a 330 OT is pushing him out of the frame.

dante kaalund
dante kaalund

Versitiliy he can play inside to but special teams will be his main thing

dante kaalund
dante kaalund

@williamg1 McIntyre wasn't much bigger! And Reilly can get bigger and stronger. I guess it would kinda sorta be a redshirt year but you have to figure with the tools he has he can possibly fill the job description
