Jets select QB Tajh Boyd

With the No. 213 pick of the NFL Draft, the Jets selected Clemson QB Tajh Boyd.

Boyd, who is 6-foot-1 and 222 pounds, was the ACC Player of the Year in 2012 and was a finalist for the Unitas and Manning Awards in 2013 after posting his 283/413 (68.5%) for 3851 yards and 34 TDs to 11 INTs in 13 starts.  Boyd become the first quarterback in ACC history to throw for more than 30 touchdowns in three seasons and set a record with 107 career TDs.

The former Clemson QB ran a 40-yard dash time of 4.84 seconds at the Combine.

Scouts say that for a quarterback Boyd is short and stocky, but that he is a strong-armed quarterback suited for a vertical-power offense.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

A year ago, Boyd was talked about as a potential early round prospect.  It is mind-blowing that the Jets were able to get Boyd with the fourth of their sixth round draft picks.

Rex Ryan is very familiar with Boyd, as his son Seth was a freshman on the team in 2013 and Rex has followed Clemson football leading into that decision by his son.  Rex has often spoken glowingly about Boyd and so that Rex pushed for this doesn’t seem like that much of a surprise.

Read Pauline’s full report. (Draft Insider, April 21)

While Boyd is likely destined to be a backup for his NFL career, could the Jets find a way to use him?  He’s not as fast as Brad Smith was, but he was effective as a runner inside the five yard line.  The problem of course with setting up a package just for him is that it would throw off the gameday activation numbers.

Most likely, Boyd will battle with Matt Simms for the team’s third quarterback spot this season.  Since Boyd was just drafted, expect him to already have an inside shot.

Could someone possibly explain why Idzik didn't use a couple of picks bundled to get  a player more likely to make it, than to eventually cut a few before Game 1?

Boyd sucks.  FSU exposed him to how one dimensional he was last year at Death Valley.  He showed zero poise and zero ability to go through his progressions.  A reason why he dropped like a stone.

Very surprised only G Dozier selected. Idzik must know something about Schaunderlaff, Abashi, Campbell, and Ijalana that we don't.

I'm a little worried about penalties, with Colon and the new RT. Both were near league leaders in flags.

Back in January (I think it was January) I read a report that the Jets were really going to focus on character in this draft and that seems to be exactly what they have done. Just about every pick was a team Captain and had very clean backgrounds.

for the most part players that where needed where drafted, can't have everything you want in a draft, a top receiver on the other side of Decker would have been nice

assuming 5 of the 12 make the roster..where do we stash the other 7...hopefully we dont waste too roster spots on guys we never activate, ie Oday Abushi and Will Campbell

Trevor Reilly | OLB, UtahReilly is a bit old for a rookie (will be 26), but posseses impressive rush skills off the edge and good instincts. Injuries have slowed him in the past, but he has the natural ability to end up a real steal here for the Jets in the seventh.

I don't want our QB coming off the field inside the five, particularly with the weapons we added in the draft and FA.

Since Boyd was just drafted, expect him to already have the job....there I fixed that for ya Mr. Bassett!

should have traded up for a more NFL ready receiver that can be a go to guy for big plays, we'll have to wait for players to develop and see who can be that guy, Decker will get double team or the other teams best corner will blanket him

That may open things up for Hill......... we'll see.

Joey, anything past the 3rd round is a developmental project NOT question marks. This draft may be franchise changing.

@jake100  Hey Joey, shut up and go piss in your own cheerios for once.

@jake100  I'd say two draft picks are immediate starters, and another will be in the mix for a starting job. Hopefully one of the WRs shines and takes the starting WR job.

@jake100  Two potential starters and the rest major question marks? Show me how many teams on average are lucky enough to come away with more than 2 potential starters in the draft without having more than one pick in each of the first two or three rounds.

@jake100 this was a good draft...far from as pessimistic as you project

@DarrolRayFanClub

Thanks.  We presently have 87 on our roster where over the ensuing months, over 30% will be cut.  Why not secure someone of value to the team post-Labor Day were my thoughts?   Your reply helped me.

@candlejack @marcus81 even if Jets don't have a big playmaker if they get first downs and sustain drives it will help the defense a lot

@a57se

assuming they hit RB in round 8, what else were you hoping they would address that they didn't?

a57se

@jake100

Overall, it is a pretty good draft Joey......just didn't address some of the things we all thought it would.

NYCPEinGermany
NYCPEinGermany

@jake100 @NYCPEinGermany@MarshRandy

I'm pretty happy with it. We addressed every single need I hoped for (WR & CB each twice) - often more or less at the point that I hoped for.

I'm not an expert on every guy they drafted, but once you get to the mid rounds it's such a crap shoot anyway. You gotta trust the scouting department to know more than you, me, the draftniks or the beat writers.
