Jets select TE Jace Amaro

With the No. 49 pick in the NFL Draft, the Jets selected tight end Jace Amaro.

Amaro is listed at 6 foot 5 inches and 265 pounds.

“It’s the greatest day of my life,” Amaro said after being selected by the Jets. “That was the place where I wanted to play.”

He set the NCAA record for single-season total receiving yards by a tight end with 1,352 and yards per game with 104. He was a unanimous All-American. He had 138 career receptions for 1,818 yards and 13 touchdowns.

He “moves like an oversized receiver,” according to his draft profile on NFL.com.

He missed the last six games of last season with a lacerated spleen, fractured rib and internal bleeding. Amaro was arrested in March 2012 for credit card fraud. The charges were later dropped. He was also ejected from the Meineke Car Care Bowl against Minnesota for throwing a punch.

Jets GM John Idzik attended Amaro’s pro day.

“Only thing I can do is show them why I should have been there,” Amaro said of not being taken in the first round.

I love this pick. Sitting next to Tony Pauline in Radio City, Pauline’s thoughts on the selection, in a word was, “tremendous.”

Amaro joins a Jets team that badly needs more receiving threats this fall. While there’s still a potential opening at receiver for the Jets to fill, Amaro will immediately upgrade this team’s passing game. In Geno Smith’s rookie year the Jets didn’t have a single receiver with more than 50 catches.

At 6-feet-5, 265 pounds with impressive straight-line speed (4.74 seconds) that allows him to create seperation against linebackers. Amaro lined up mostly in the slot for the Red Raiders and caught over 100 balls with first year quarterbacks. Amaro is a big, fluid athlete who uses his thick frame to get proper positioning over smaller defensive backs in coverage and uses his large, hands to pluck the ball from the air.

Amaro is known as a solid route-runner and while not sudden, can use his balance to change direction easily. Amaro can be dangerous after the catch and is hard to bring down.

Amaro isn’t the most explosive or athletic receiver in this draft class, he’s a good receiver lining up in the slot or away from the line. For a while Amaro was talked about as a potential first rounder so for the Jets to get him there was good value.

Bent, TheJetsBlog.com

This seems to be a popular pick with the fanbase and it’s in a position where there should be opportunities to contribute as a rookie. While there are some questions surrounding him, he certainly was productive (106 catches last season). It might take some time for him to make the adjustment from the Texas Tech spread offense into Marty Mornhinweg’s offense, but he has size, strength and athleticism and could develop into just the type of player that Mornhinweg likes to use. In fact, his measurables aren’t too far off those of Brent Celek.

Anybody read NFL.COM's write up on Dexter McDougle?  Says he is projected as a 6th or 7th round draft pick....ouch!

Jets pick injured CB in third and patsies draft injured DL in first round.  Yeah.......I'm gonna take the CB.

Seattle drafted Golden Tate as a first rounder, I'm sure Idzik realizes that taking the best available WR could be a good thing

Somebody posted in here yesterday the Jets had a deal in place with the Raiders for Denarius Moore for a 4th round pick.....wonder if there is any truth to that?

i would think we have to trade our second 4th to get in to the third round

At least they drafted Amaro

It must have been unbelievably painful for those arses in Florham Park to help out their young QB

Houston gave up a 5 to move up 18 spots. How much would it take to move back in to take a WR?

@jenkins I liked the Jaguars picks, they have an offense in place ready to take over in the next year or two, I know they're still the Jaguars

@idothis2 with this pick you know Rex has too much input into the draft, you have have a balanced team on both sides of the ball

Isn't Brown a Ford clone?

@harold

Poor value??  Now how does a projected top 15 pick in 1st round, who gets picked at 18, be considered poor value??

marcus81

@harold Pryor with Allen should be great, and Amaro will help out a lot, no deep threat receiver drafted sucks though

jenkins

@harold  If they just took Moncrief at 80, I would have liked all 3.

Paul Samuels

@supert  Then why wouldn't they announce it like the Bills and Niners trade?

Maybe he makes it to our Tampa pick in the 4th.

Edit-damn the colts

@jroc if he catches 45 balls with a lot of first downs it would be a big plus

Tampa's 4 and our tradable 6th

@Paul Samuels @supert  Trades like that are usually dependent on the guy the Raiders want will being there or the guy the Jets want not being there. The bills and the Niners Both seemed to really want the trade to happen more than anything in the draft (Niners have a bunch of picks anyway and the Bills are looking for the cap relief from the trade more than the draft pick) so they didn't do it like that.

@jenkins @marcus81Bucs  will find out if Glennon is the real with those weapons

I suggested this earlier today, that I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't draft a wr today. Gotta be one of the 4ths. I would suggest a we/olb combo with our 4ths.

@idothis2 @Bytor there is still Abrederis and Herron, but at this  point don't even count on getting one of them, Idzik must hate WR's
