Jets sign CB Dimitri Patterson

UPDATE 6:39: Dimitri Patterson’s deal is worth one-year, $3 million (ProFootballtalk, April 1)

The Jets have signed cornerback Dimitri Patterson (Jets, April 1).

Patterson, who played for the Miami Dolphins the past two seasons, visited the Jets on Monday. He had 24 tackles and one sack in six starts with Miami. The 30-year-old also had four interceptions during the 2013 season — the most he has recorded since 2010 with the Eagles.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

If you haven’t already, pencil in Dee Milliner in as the team’s top cornerback for the 2014.  With Kyle Wilson, Darrin Walls, Ellis Lankster and now Dmitri Patterson the Jets have more than enough talent to handle the depth at corner from three to six.  The problem is that Milliner’s play was shaky until the last four weeks of the NFL season … are the Jets unfairly projecting his acceleration?  Regardless of Milliner, that second starting spot is still very much an unknown.  The Jets will likely look to the NFL draft to add another cornerback before the end of the fourth round, but there’s a still lot of questions around the secondary, long the strength of the Jets, as the team exits the free agent period.

If there’s a bright side to this, it is that the Jets pass rush will limit the time that cornerbacks are left in coverage as the group gets yet another year under the belt.  Remember that between the team’s four starters up front (Wilkerson, Coples, Harrison and Richardson) the team has just eight accrued years of NFL experience, this could be an explosive year in their development as a group.

Last year the Jets brought over Willy Colon prier to becoming a Jet. He had injuries the last 4 years before leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jets took a chance with Willy and he played great. Same thing holds true for Patterson. If he can stay healthy I'm sure he wont wow anyone however at the same time Jet fans wont be complaining at his play. I think he'll play good enough. Maybe a solid year at the CB position.

Stephen Hill. In the up coming movie draft day. with Kevin Costner. The movie shows Stephen Hill getting slam out of bonds by Troy Polamalu. I think after that Hill played hurt a little the rest of the season. Last year before the season started the knock on Hill was he couldn't catch. Well that change this year Hill did a great job on catching the ball and hanging on to it.

Hill this year needs to improve his route running as a receiver. He does that and we got our self a football player.

Guys I have sat here and read all these comments about the jets I have been a fan for many years and a football fan all my life and what this Gm have done this year is down right awful you add depth when you have starters and play makers decker is not a number 1 wr he is a number 2 at best these are bums he is adding and setting Rex up to fail he is cheap and way over his head last year the jets were suppose to be the worst team in the nfl he did nothing to improve the team when he could of his answer was wait until 2014 we will have cap space well 2014 is here and he is not doing nothing FIRE his ass now it's only gonna get worst

Paterson, Ford, maybe Coleman. These are depth players and potentially core special teamers. These are also the kind of players that set you up for the draft. Sign a bunch of depth players and take 12 choices into draft day. This gives you an incredible amount of flexibility. At some point you've got to get one or two explosive offensive threats. If you think Watkins or Evans is one of those guys, maybe you've put yourself in a position to go get one of them.

I'll admit, I've had some great finds at Marshall's...

Didn't John Idzik draft Dee Milliner with his first draft choice as GM of the Jets.  I think he has an idea good CB's are important.

Having some depth is also important.  We should have plenty of depth after this draft and some of these guys will hopefully push for playing time,  some rookies might even start.

No harm is signing Patterson. Having depth is never a bad thing. He's actually a pretty good player when healthy.

@bob  Speaking on Stephen Hill and Draft Day, he makes a random appearance in the green room in the movie!

@bob  From your mouth to god's ear. Otherwise, he and Sanjay Lal can commute together to their next jobs.

@j3tsfan29  Dennard, OBJ, Cooks, in that order. I'm not sure if Dennard will be there, but I REALLY want to get him.

@zeab  I agree, a very sub par free agency.   A platoon of journeyman for depth is ok, but where are the solid starters in key starting positions that we needed? If Idzik has a master plan, it obviously is for the future, but he still could have improved the present and failed to do so. I am very disappointed so far.

Brian Serviss

@zeab  you see what the Seahawks did over there in Seattle? What did they just accomplish last season? What was their approach again? Idzik is following the same approach

@jvsvn  That's what I think is happening, too. I hope it's Watkins, but think it's Evans

@jvsvn  Patterson started on a Dolphins teams that went and spent a ton of money last offseason. Doubt he's here just for depth

Keep talking Monty, you are  no more wrong then the people who are praising Idzik for signing nobodies.

@Monty  i do see your point man....cant say i dont.    but im takin the approach where we lived through Tanny's style and while it did get us to 2 AFC title games, we still never even got to a bowl.. then his style put us in a hole.  doling out deals to Sanchez, Holmes, terrible drafts, terrible depth, etc.........Now we trying a diff approach.  more measured, thought out, not overspending,  building thru draft.......im willing to let it play out...see what Idzik does in the draft and in the offseason.....

lets see if he can build something sustainable....oh yea, and he drafted Sheldon Richardson, so that alone makes me love the guy......

@Monty

I'll play.

>>>

Ford is a better kickoff returner than anyone currently on the roster.

As a receiver he's not better than any of the top three, but after that, he's in the mix.

>>>

Patterson is a better press coverage corner than anyone on the roster apart from Lankster.

He's a better slot corner than anyone on the roster apart from Wilson.

He's a better outside corner than anyone on the roster apart from Milliner.

You've already had the stats in terms of QB rating when targeted and PFF grades which are better than any defensive back on the Jets roster last year, including Cromartie and Reed.

>>>

And...because they were cheap, we still have that money to spend somewhere down the line.  Instead of blowing it all in one go and then that guy has a down year or gets hurt.

Tell me where I'm wrong.

Go!

The only thing I'm gonna tell you Monty is what a doucheTroll u seem to be. Over and over again. I think I speak for most Jets fans when I encourage you to find a new to team to "cheer" for

@NJ libertarian @j3tsfan29  i like cooks and obj also...im pretty big on jordan matthews but he might be a reach at 18 but i really dont think he will make it to us in the 2nd round if we pass on a receiver...best case scenairio for me tho would be somehow getting justin gilbert at 18 and jordan matthews in the 2nd but i think its close to impossible of happening

@nickballs @Monty  Parcells did the same thing. He got close, but once it went south it tooks years to clear out cap space.

@williamg1 @Brian Serviss @zeab

I agree totally.  I remember on Draft Day the camera panning in on Wilson still undrafted with his "Brady Quinn" face on.

Only through his hard work, determination, and skill did things work out great for him and Seattle.  No magic formula, no recipe. Some luck, hard work, and probably lightening made it happen.

@williamg1 @Brian Serviss @zeab

 1 He wasnt even the seahawks GM

2 the seahawks brought in three free agent pass rushers last year along with percy harvin. They had some other contributers as well that were trades and or free agents.. anyone ever heard of marshawn Lynch?

I liken us more to the ravens.. we have to strenthen our defense and hope geno can be our flacco ..The truth is no one knows how this will turn out...

we can only go on his results and letting cro get 3,5 and paying patterson 3 is bad results no matter how its sliced..

williamg1
williamg1

@Brian Serviss @zeab  Can we stop with this "he's using the same method as the Seahawks." That method included drafting stars in the later rounds. Are you saying Idzik's method will draft us the next Russell Wilson in round 3?

Brian Serviss
Brian Serviss

@zeab  I'm aware Idzik was not in control. But he is doing the same exact method as them. No where in my previous comment did I say "Idzik made that team what it is today"

@williamg1 @Brian Serviss@a57se@jvsvn

Let's also remember that Idzik proved he can find some diamonds in the rough of free agency.

Yes some got hurt but most of us will agree that Goodson, Barnes, Colon and Nelson played well.
