Jets to re-sign Matt Simms

The Jets will re-sign Matt Simms and Jermaine Cunningham (Steinberg).

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

OverTheCap.com has both Simms and Cunningham listed as on the team page for 2014.  Simms would be an exclusive player to the Jets since this is just his second year.

Cunningham would be an unrestricted free agent this year.  Drafted by the Patriots in 2010 in the second round, Cunningham didn’t become the player the Patriots hoped and he was cut by New England during 2013 cutdowns.  The Niners picked him up for the month of October before releasing him.

By signing him now, the Jets might try to hedge their bets at the OLB position as they head into free agency and the draft by making Cunningham the coaching staff’s reclamation project much as they have with Jarron Gilbert, Marcus Dixon, Aaron Maybin and Jaiquawn Jarrett in the last few years.

I feel like any decent ERFA is almost a no-brainer to tender, especially at QB. There's almost no commitment there. At worst, you've burned 500K.

i would like to see them grow simm's... let him come along as it used to be for QB's. we take rookies and expect them to win and take us into the playoffs. that is not how it used to be. Besides, I would love the irony of another Simms going to the super bowl.. for us!

Finally, a FO move that doesn't completely suck!

The fact that Simms re-signed is no big deal because as an exclusive rights free agent, he was 99% likely to return for the minimum in March anyway.  Re-signing Cunningham is more surprising because he wasn't even active towards the end of the year, so I was wondering if he'd not really impressed them.
