Jets to sign Jeff Cumberland to 3-year deal

The Jets will sign TE Jeff Cumberland to a three-year deal (Mehta, March 7).

The 26-year-old Cumberland had 26 receptions for 398 and four touchdowns in 2013.

Mehta reports that while the organization concedes the team needs as much help as it can find, the team is “bullish” on Cumberland’s ability to increase his productivity.  Additionally, Mehta reported that “team decision makers are high on Zach Sudfield’s potential” and that the team has had “internal discussions” on Brandon Pettigrew, Ed Dickson and Scott Chandler.

While there’s no word yet on the financial terms of the deal, retaining Cumberland is a sound move by the organization and we’re glad to see Cumby back in the mix for the foreseeable future.

As more and more teams move to “12” personnel packages on their offense,  the Jets now have Cumberland and Sudfield at a minimum for such groupings and if they dabble in free agency might get significantly better by adding one of the players mentioned above in the team’s internal discussions or through their rumored interest in Jermichael Finley.

As we mentioned earlier today, signing Cumberland doesn’t preclude more moves at this position.  Tight end is an easy position for which the Jets can stand on the talent they already know and like and upgrade quickly with a Pettigrew, Finley or even Chandler type without having to break the bank to do so.

not excited about our TE's, any 1st rounder would be an upgrade over what Jets have

This signing proves our offense will forever be regarded as a joke to the entire league...

Cumby has more upside than the rest of the FA tight ends. Good move to lock him up.

Maybe Finley was leverage to sign Cunmberland. We may not be looking at both.

Also still would love to get ASJ in the draft. I think he is flying under the radar.

I'm thinking the Jets are going to sign Finley.  So TE wont be addressed until mid draft.

After looking at those stats you wonder why the deal was ever in question.  Can't be that much $ annually.
well at least it shouldn't be..

Ebron or another TE in the first or second round would be a nice combo.  I like the move, but still need another TE.

After 5 years you 're still talking upside. If Finley stays healthy he is much better than Cumby.

Being Jets tested is not a good thing recently when talking offense. I'm not really opposed to the signing but don't act like it is a great signing. If Cumby was a FA I know most here would say pass.

Not so sure of that since Finley is a better TE. I don't want to hear upside after 5 years.

If Ebron is there at 18 he has to be considered unless Lee or Evans is still there.
