Jets training camp preview: Defensive line

We will be providing position-by-position breakdowns leading up to Jets training camp this Thursday.  For now, we focus on the defensive line.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

On the roster: DL Damon Harrison, DT Sheldon Richardson, DL Muhammad Wilkerson, DT Leger Douzable, DT Kenrick Ellis, DE IK Enemkpali, DE Tim Fugger, DE Anthony Grady, DE Kerry Hyder, DT TJ Barnes, DT Tevita Finau (editor’s note: for sake of ease we are using the Jets own roster to delineate LBs and DLs)

Muhammad Wilkerson2013 notes: The Jets moved from their defensive line simply being a group on the rise in 2012, to the Sons of Anarchy during the 2013 season.  The groups ability to stop the run much of the season was uncanny.  Wilkerson was his usual excellent self, Damon Harrison was dominant on the interior and rookie Sheldon Richardson played the run like a man shot out of a cannon and only looks to get better.  The group stopped runners better than any defensive line (not including linebackers) has for the Jets since Ryan took over stuffing 26% of running plays.

The defensive line was a force to be reckoned with, but also did need to get to the passer more quickly.  The group only sacked the quarterback on 6.2% of plays; only good enough for 24th in the league.

Overall outlook: With the same personnel back in 2014, there’s no reason to see why the young group can’t build on their 2013 successes.  While the team was able to provide pressure on quarterbacks, it didn’t necessarily translate to sacks for the front group.  Rex Ryan likes his linemen taking down the quarterback, he doesn’t value it over getting his defense off the field.  Even so, Richardson’s strength as a rookie was against the run, but look for his growth as a pass rusher and expect his development with the rest of the group to come together quickly when it comes to pressuring the quarterback.

Camp competition:  The Jets first team is set so look for Kenrick Ellis and Leger Douzable to make their claims to the first backup spots.  Beyond that group, the Jets will likely seek to secure a roster spot for rookie draft pick IK Enemkpali if possible, but he and and the rest of the group will be fighting for the final two spots.

Shouldn't it be "__ people reading" or "__ people idling?"

I want answers.

Right now both Brendan and a57se are listening (as per _ people listening).

Interesting that both Hank and 68 disappear from the Blog at the same time!

Here's the shorter version of the DL preview...

I just want to know Jalen Saunders current weight... what is the chance we find that out?

The Giants just brought back David Tyree to be their Director of Player Development. HAHAHA.  He only had 54 carreer catches in 5 years.  Even Steven Hill would say that's poor production.  What is he going to teach the young players, to be in the right place at the right time and make one good catch and parlay that into a entire carreer.

I think we've discussed every aspect of this team a zillion times this offseason. Feeling sort of talked-out. Ready for some football.

@a57se Hank (or Fonzie) has been lurking consistently since he (they) stopped posting. 68 is legitimately gone, which I would assume is work-related.

WOOOO WHEEE. You see that boys!? 'ol WILKERSHAKES thinks you guys are the tits (slaps Wilkershakes on the ass....hard). And not just mine that are inching closer to the floor with all this weight loss, ALL OF THEM. THEY SHOULD CALL THIS DL THE RACK EXCHANGE. Maybe that way the Godfather will stop sending out dik pics to every willing lady in the Tri-state. I'M TALKING TO YOU, GENO. I call him Godfather because he's got the personality of Michael Corleone and is named after a canoli chef. CANOLI'S. Damn, I'd tear my own stomach open bare-handed for a canoli right now. NOW WHERE WAS I!? Oh, right. DL. Men...oh, MEN. This is the type of DL to make 'ol Rexy's panties drop. You are marauders, forces of god damn nature, YOU EAT SLEEP AND FCK L.O.S. DOMINATION. WE WILL NOT REST UNTIL TOM BRADY IS BLOWING SNOT BUBBLES AT BELICHICK. It's time to make the MOTHER FCKING DONUTS, MEN. AND BY DONUTS I MEAN BLOODY QB'S SCREAMING FOR THEIR MOMMIES. Now bring it in here. GODFATHER! Go let Manish out of that dumpster, I forgot we locked him in there yesterday and posted an article with his phone. KILL ON THREE. ONE, TWO, THREE...

Everyone: KILL!

@Wilkershakes

I will do the rest of the groups.

O-Line - Slightly better.

RB's -  Scary, fun to watch.

WR's -  Greatly Improved, with huge upside(young).

TE's - Better than people think.

LB's - Will old their own.

CB's - Wild Card, with chance of being solid to great.

Safeties - On the rise, will create more TO's this year than in years past.

@UncleJoesJetFarm Yup...because a rough offseason means receiving poor QB rankings.  Hell, Josh Gordon's ranked up in the top 5 for WR.  "Helluva offseason there, my man!  Cleveland Browns SB bound!"

@williamg1

Well, I'm not settled on Vick's true role with the team.  He's a starting caliber veteran, in the late prime of his career.  Geno is a struggling neophyte who didn't belong on the field last year.  So why exactly are they trying to convince us that they brought in Vick to be a backup?  I'll put on a pot of coffee, and let's figure this out today.

@Ceifus Hornswoggle @williamg1

For what its worth:

“After I went through the throws of Geno Smith last year, I saw a guy who got better every single week. The last quarter of the season, I thought Geno Smith looked like a much more polished NFL quarterback. And the people I am now speaking to in the Jets camp say that Geno Smith is clearly ahead of Michael Vick."

@a57se You never noticed the "___ people listening" thing at the top of the commenting section?

Hank's avatar chills there all the time, even when he's "disappeared."

@a57se @UncleJoesJetFarm I thought it was, lol Lets face it, we are the bad boys along with Hank, but we keep the chains moving and that is what its all about baby!!!!!

@Wilkershakes Haha thanks. I figured it's been a while since we've seen one of these things, and your comment combined with Rex's chatter this week brought it out of me, I guess.

@williamg1 @Ceifus Hornswoggle It's difficult to say he "got better every week" when he was so up and down in the first half and his worst spell was in the middle of the year.

@Brendan @a57se

Far as I can tell specific names of who is "listening" only show up if that person has already commented. Everyone else is just an anonymous number.

@Brendan @a57se Just means he didn't log out but it doesn't mean he is lurking. I get lazy and leave my self logged on sometimes, but many times I am not at my computer, so it would appear that I was lurking in the shadows.

@Bent @williamg1 @Ceifus Hornswoggle  But in the middle of the year a rookie will still struggle. It was a breath of fresh air to see him coming on and  the bulb lighting up the last few games, and especially when he started getting his wrs back from injury. A rookie with no continuity of wrs is a receipe for disaster during the year, but geno never caved and actually looked much better down the stretch. Now, with another full training camp under his belt and the upgraded supporting cast, I see some nice things coming down the pike! The coaches are all high on him and see some real development. The players are also rallying around him arriba!

@juunit Nah, I've seen Hank on multiple threads listening in over the past week, but he hasn't posted in any of those threads.

@UncleJoesJetFarm

I don't do that too often when I am home because the Blog tends to cause some dopey plug-in to crash and all my audio goes away. I then have to reload anything i am listening to...

Brendan

@UncleJoesJetFarm If he wasn't on this specific page, it wouldn't show up, Joey. If you see it, they've at least opened the page and just left it open on their computer.

@a57se Well, now you have and you can coax your pal out of hiding when you see him hanging out, lurking in the shadows.

Hank must be special then, because I only ever see names show up when the person has left a comment already.

Maybe he's deleted posts? BY THE POWER OF JOHN LITHGOW!

I've noticed it too and he hasn't commented, even when there is obvious bait in the water.

Right now it says there are 30 people listening but they only show 4 peoples' avatars...there doesn't appear to be a way to see who ALL the listeners are.

You and your buddies throw enough bait in the water..

I would have thought you'd be happy he hasn't been posting.

I don't miss 68.

Brendan

@UncleJoesJetFarm Yes, but you still came here, that's the point. To be "listening" you have to first open the page.

Brendan
Brendan

@a57se That is correct. As far as I can tell, it's random. Or maybe it shows the most frequent visitors/posters first? No clue, to be honest.

@a57se When Hank is focused on football, he's fine. It's when he starts delving into more serious matters that I and others take issue.

And I know you don't miss 68, if someone proved me wrong as often as he proves you wrong, I wouldn't want them around, either.
