Jets ‘very interested’ in Michael Vick

The Jets are “very interested” in Michael Vick (Cimini, March 11).

Vick has told some Eagles teammates that he believes his most likely destination is with the Jets (Freeman, March 11).

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Rex Ryan was interested in adding Vick going back to his Bahamas trip after the 2012 season when it was leaked he would love to add a player like Mike Vick to the Jets to make the team more dynamic on offense. Ties to former OC Marty Mornhinweg and John Idzik’s refusal to ordain Geno Smith the 2014 starter all have combined to make what looks like a rather attractive opportunity for Vick, considering he wants to play and not backup first and foremost.

Just because the Jets would sign Vick doesn’t guarantee Geno will be on the bench at the start and/or at the end of the 2014 season. Still, Vick represents, by far, the best competition Smith could see this summer. The Jets have the money to afford paying Vick what he wants — rumored to be north of $5 million per year for a deal that is at least two years.

If the Jets are to add Vick it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are scrapping their plans to go to a more run-focused offense … they still might add more running plays as a way to protect Vick from injury … something that has been a big issue for him since he joined Philly and even prior during his days in Atlanta.

There are, of course, past federal legal troubles that we know will turn many Jets fans off on bringing him to the team. And justifiably so. While adding Vick might make the most sense on the field, many will have a visceral reaction to his past. Beyond this, there could also be serious concerns about bringing back what might be construed as a “circus” environment to the Jets after a painful 2012 season that many fans aren’t looking forward to seeing return any time soon.

Vick = circus? BS

Vick's past = horrible, but the man was punished and did his time. Get over it.

Please God no... But we all know a woods loves " big names" and the publicity that comes with it.

We waited to have all this cap space, let's not pull a Knicks and ruin it for the next few years with dumb signings.

Waste of $$$.

Take what ever he was going to make and put it towards Jarius Byrd.

Or a good corner back.

Maybe Revis wants to come back ;-)

Besides the fact this guy DROWNS DOGS THAT DONT FIGHT GOOD ENOUGH, he's also a washed up, injury prone, turnover machine. Please pass on this mess

Vick had the best success that he ever had as a starting QB when MM was his OC.  In 4 seasons with MM, 3 as a starter, Vick completed 60% of his passes, threw for over 8,700 yards, passed for 52 TDs to 30 INTs and ran for another 12 TDs.  Vick struggled in Philly when his OL became a dumpster fire.  He'd be the perfect vet to come in because he knows MM's system, can execute it properly and teach Geno (and Simms, etc., how to do the same) and he represents real competition and would be a competent back up.  He has baggage, is somewhat injury prone, and does get too many turnovers, on occasion, but he'd be the most competent QB on the Jets since Favre (before arm injury) and, unlike Favre, already has the rep of a good mentor.

Sanchez never had serious competition, he coasted, got to be entitled and regressed.  Vick represents a good measuring stick for Geno because, when Vick is on, he's a top tier NFL QB.

No, please no. It's years (and a lot hits) too late. They should've done it when he got out of the joint.

The Jets, where QBs go to die

Interesting - Blaine Gabbert to SF for a 6th; if Gabbert can fetch a 6th you'd have to think Sanchez could too, right?

Quit whining people, Vick would probably be the best QB we've had since first-half-of-the-year-Favre. Not that I think he should play over Geno

Brian, I don't mean to question your sources (since I don't have any), but this meme where we are going to run the ball more (run focused offense).....exactly where did this come from ? Did Idik, Marty, or Rex come out and say this?...or is this something that gets repeated so often it just gets to become the conventional wisdom.

Vick now gets hurt without even getting hit! The last two occasions that he missed games was due to muscle pulls! I am not even talking about all the controversy that he will bring and distractions, but he is done as a QB!  He turns the ball over more than Geno - a raw rookie in his first season. Vick wants to be a starter, so he will have an agenda! This will be a crazier move than Tebow, I pray Idzik has the intelligence that I feel has, to stay away from this bum!

And Vick helps Geno develop how?   I wouldn't mind if Vick started the game on the sidelines as THE backup, not to start as   the Jets future.

Top tier QB? You must have a lot of names on that tier

Fitting for Vick to wind up where QB's go to die.

@Pat d  could be worse, we could have traded for Blaine Gabbert

@Lloyd Jay Reife  Vick wants to start, he would not be helpful to the kid, he would have an agenda. Whoever trusts the integrity of this guy, good luck! Not to mention the circus will be back.  The guy pulls a muscle waking up in the morning, lol and is a turnover machine even as a Veteran QB. This would set the jets back from the new direction that we are all excited about. This guy would make Tebow look like a success with the jets! At least Tebow was a good guy!

Not really, that means Vick doesn't want to be a back up

But none of us are writing the checks. Revis isn't going to take a pay cut to come back to the Jets. More likely if Revis has to take a pay cut he could end up with the Pats.

@Bent @1969JAN12th  Yes, I saw this the other day on one of the threads on TJB. It's just that since Idzik has been here, the leaks have pretty much been cleaned up. Even today, we really don't know which FAs we are going after...just rumors and conjecture. So, when I read that a teams offensive philosophy is being put out there going forward, I question it. If we sign Golden Tate, or draft Ebron, or one of the top WRs (or all of the above) , and Geno becomes more accurate going forward, does that mean we are going to still be a run oriented offense ?

I guess what I'm saying is I'd like to know where Tony Pauline got this info.

Vick is a 34 year old inaccurate passer that can't rely on his legs any more. That's not great. And he doesn't want to be a locker room guy or he would have went to SF

@Pat d  so what, if he's better than Geno than he should play, and that makes the team win more games

I'd take him back in a heartbeat, but I think there's too much bad blood between him and Woody for it to ever happen.
