Jets will be ‘strategic’ in how they use Chris Johnson

The Jets know that Chris Johnson is no longer in the prime of his career, so they will be “strategic” in how they use him, running backs coach Anthony Lynn said (Cosentino, June 25).

“We’re going to have to be strategic in how we use him, and when we use him, to keep him fresh so that he can be the explosive guy that I know that he can be,” Lynn said.

Johnson is 29-years-old and is working back from a torn meniscus in his knee, which held him out of OTAs and minicamp until mid-June.

He will likely be paired with Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell in the backfield during the season.

“With [Johnson's] skill-set, combined with Ivory’s power-running game, and Powell’s more of a combination of both, it’s a really good quality to have in the room,” Lynn said.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

It makes perfect sense.  Unless the wheels come off both Ivory and Powell there’s no reason to use Chris Johnson as the team’s workhorse.  The plan was similar for LaDainian Tomlinson a few years ago when he came to the team, but with Shonn Greene’s lack of production Tomlinson was thrust into a larger role.

The value that Johnson brings to the team is the big play threat through either the catch or run, Ivory and Powell don’t have that same explosiveness, so when it comes down to the “three yards and a could of dust” work, it’s perfectly understandable why the Jets would want others to step up to allow Johnson to be used more effectively and efficiently as a big play weapon.

Wow - I had to scroll down to the bottom 5% of the comments to get anything related to the post, let alone related to (American) football at all. Must be a TJB record!

Congrats, Bent.  Marcus Smart seems like the kind of guy who will genuinely annoy me as a Celtic for the next ten years.

Damn you, Boston.

Joel Embiid looks absolutely thrilled to be a Sixer.  Thrilled.

boredom compelled me to Google "Kyle Wilson Highlights". pretty sad that no Jets highlights came up

We should take this guy:

http://deadspin.com/get-to-know-the-guy-who-might-be-the-steal-of-the-nba-d-1596574284

His name is Clint Capela. He's a 6-foot-11, 20-year-old power forward who plays in the French Pro A League, and he's projected to be selected somewhere in the 20s during tonight's draft. You should begin orienting yourself with Capela by checking out this article by Kevin Pelton, whose WARP projections have Capela as the second-most valuable player in the draft.

Pelton is high on Capela because the young forward has shown himself to be an elite rebounder (rebound rate: 26.4 percent), shot blocker (block percentage: 7.5), and finisher at the rim (field goal percentage: 63.8) against European competition. Those gaudy numbers are expected to translate into the kind of NBA stats that would put Capela on par with a 20-year-old Tyson Chandler or Andre Drummond.

You don't need to rely solely on stats to get excited about Capela, though. Spend a few minutes watching the highlight reel at the top of the page, and you'll come away convinced that he'd be a top-1o pick in a less-loaded draft.

Would you trade Iman Shumpert for that?  I would.

There you go, it is now Official.

The US will play Belgium.

@NYCPEinGermany We do our best.

I'm interested in what the word is over in Germany after the game yesterday. Germany seemingly could have won that game 15-0, but only capitalized on one opportunity. Some of that was Tim Howard going into beastmode, but they should have tallied at least a couple more goals.

@tsjc68

I guess. If it means we keep Larkin, then fine. We've got too many shooting guards anyway. Can't play 3 guys who all are borderline starters at the same position. Especially since Larkin makes it 3.5 shooting guards on the team.

@tsjc68 Interesting. Barnes has a team option for '15-'16 and is reasonably priced. Depending on who they got I could live with that.

To feed our own fantasies...NBADraft.net has Capela going 29th.

@tsjc68 Don't know this guy from Adam and I know the situation is totally different, but the thought of Steve Mills drafting his second Frenchman fills me with dread.

Brendan
Brendan

@tsjc68 Okay, wow. Know who he reminds me of on defense? Patrick Ewing at Georgetown.

And he does Bill Russell blocks (where he destroys someone's shot, but still directs it to a teammate to start a fast break).

@Bent

Yeah, I figured that wasn't a genuine nonplussed reaction.

Still, though, you can bet that there will be some "Joel Embiid reacts to _______" gifs and Vines popping up in the next few days.

@Brendan @tsjc68

Foolishly spinning this forward:

POTENTIAL DEPARTURES:

Tyson Chandler

Ray Felton

Iman Shumpert

POTENTIAL ADDITIONS:

Sam Dalembert

Jose Calderon

Shane Larkin

Wayne Ellington

Matt Barnes

Clint Capela

Cory Jefferson

Patric Young

That would be lovely, regardless of what happens with Melo.

@joemustgo @tsjc68

He's not French, he's Swiss.  (Black Swiss, at that.)

Just plays in France, that's all.

Hope that helps.

@Brendan @tsjc68

I mean, I know you love Shumpert (and I do too), but with Hardaway, JR Smith, Calderon, Larkin, Prigioni, Toure Murray, and Shannon Brown we can certainly afford to deal away Shump...

... and if you can deal him for a pick you can use to get "The next Greek Freak" who is coveted by the Raptors and the Spurs, man, that sounds like a pretty good idea.

Iman Shumpert - G/F - Knicks

The Knicks are not interested in dealing Iman Shumpert for draft picks, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Stein reported that the Knicks were indeed shopping Shumpert for a first-round pick on June 23rd, so perhaps the Knicks and Phil Jackson have had a change of heart. Shump's name has already come up in connection to multiple teams, most notably the Thunder and Clippers.Source: Mark Stein (twitter)

Brendan

@tsjc68 Well, ideally I'd trade Smith, but only the Knicks are dumb enough to give him that much money for that many years.

@joemustgo @tsjc68

There's only three Swiss-born NBA players in history, and none of them are bad players:

Thabo Sefolosha, Enes Kanter, and Nikola Vucevic.

(Sefolosha, like Capela, is Swiss-born from African immigrant parents, while Kanter and Vucevic are really Turkish and Montenegran, just born in Switzerland.  FWIW.)

@tsjc68 i've seen enough of JR to wish Woodson neither good nor bad. that guy is the knicks' version of Santonio. At least Santonio has a ring. his contract is asinine. Knicks should be getting ready to say peace out homie instead of being stuck with him because of Melo and Woodson

@idothis2 @tsjc68

I completely understand your frustration with JR Smith.  Completely.

That being said, I think you're jumping the gun with the whole "25-57" talk.

@tsjc68 without Melo and a rookie coach i can see it. dont want it, but i can see it. i see JR pouting if Melo leaves like a child and not following the new young leader

tsjc68
tsjc68

@idothis2 @tsjc68

I think you're also jumping the gun on the "without Melo" as well.

We may still get Melo back, and if we don't, we may get pieces back for him in a sign and trade if Melo wants to go play with LeBron someplace that can't just sign them both outright.

Let's find out.

idothis2
idothis2

@tsjc68 worst kept secret in the world is that Phil doesnt want Melo. i dont know if the Knicks will get anything above trash in return if Melo leaves. dont want him to go, but if he does, i hope phil can package is lil bro JR with him, i wouldnt mind if he went to houston or the clippers and the Knicks got Harden or Blake

tsjc68

@idothis2 @tsjc68

It can't be that poorly kept, because I haven't heard that.

James Harden would be a lovely consolation prize, though.

THEN WE SHOULD BE DRAFTING MY BOY CLINT CAPELA BABY

@tsjc68 i thought of him, but he doesn't have much of an offensive game. athletic as hell tho

Brendan
Brendan

@idothis2 If they're truly rebuilding, then it makes sense to take Capela. And if they're running some variation of the triangle, a guy who shot blocks and rebounds has a spot in the lineup, so he can play while the rest of his game develops.

idothis2
idothis2

@Brendan i missed a decade of my life while they just finished rebuilding a couple years ago. too soon to be rebuilding again, but i hated Phil for all the winning he did, so maybe i can grow to love now that he's running  the show.
