Johnson sits for rest day, other camp updates

Chris Johnson did not participate in practice as part of a planned rest day, Rex Ryan said on Wednesday.

Johnson was on a “pitch count” and had the day off. He spent practice on or near the exercise bikes.

Jalen Saunders also did not practice.

He was mum on his medical incident from Friday, saying it was a “shock” but that’s he’s “happy and alive.”

Chris Ivory was limited in practice.

Dimitri Patterson and Jeff Cumberland both practiced fully.

Just keep Johnson and Ivory fresh.  Our running game could be fun to watch this year.  Hey, our offense should be fun to watch this year.  The O-line, showing some feistiness, in pre-season, is a positive sign.  I love all the options.  If Marty is as good as people think -- I might not have to throw anything at the TV this season.

"UCF and PSU season opener in Ireland may be in jeopardy because of a possible volcanic eruption."

Wait... UCF and PSU are playing their season opener in Ireland? Why?

Just got home from attending my first Jets practice. Pretty uneventful actually. Where I was standing I mostly got to see the receivers and the offense. Here are some observations. Clyde Gates looked surprisingly good. Fast. smooth, and very confident. I'd say he is definitely a darkhorse to snag a roster spot. Stephen Hill is big and an amazing athletic specimen but simply didn't look that into it. His body language was terrible. I don't know if or how that factors into anything but he didn't impress at all. Decker is exactly the opposite. He's really big and strong and everything about him says "professional athlete." He just moves with purpose and confidence.  You can definitely see why Sudfeld has impressed. The guy can really move. He came over near me to sign autographs after practice. When you really saw how big he is, his showing in practice was even more impressive. he's huge. Amaro also came over. Also huge. If these guys turn out to be players, they will create some match up nightmares. Kerley was even smaller than I though he was but the guy is a player. Flying all over the field and catching everything. It was obvious from this practice that the Jets are planning on Kerley having a big role. He probably saw more action than anyone.

The thing that really surprised me was how little the back up QBs do in practice. Simms and Boyd did virtually nothing. Simms got a couple of snaps but, other than that, the two of them did literally nothing. Not even throwing on the sidelines. Based on what I saw, it wouldn't surprise me at all if we only have two QBs on the final roster.

@juunit

Hmmm, I wonder if that volcanic activity will interfere with GOT filming...

"“Last time I saw him he was getting smoked by Clemson,” Ryan said, and paused for a reaction. “I will say that kid’s a good back, though. He is. I was like, ‘Is anybody going to tackle him?’ It’s great. I have a funny feeling he’s going to get some Riddells [helmets] on him, but we’ll see. I have a feeling he’s going to be pumped up and trust me, our guys are going to be pumped up, too.” "

WHAT A STORY!

@jvsvn What do you mean by body language was terrible? I was there too, and I didn't notice anything. What I did notice was at one point a coach had him off to the side and the coach would throw to him high and he would jump up and extend his arms and catch the ball in his hands over and over again. Pretty much exactly what we've all said he needs to work on.

@jvsvn Interesting stuff on Hill...thanks for the update.

@jvsvn I'll be genuinely upset if they carry more than 2 QB's on the roster. Put one on the PS if you want, but seriously...no more 3 QB's on the roster.

Nice recap, thanks.

@drjreefer Didn't he actually look good on that TD run the other day? I didn't know he had it in him.

I'd view this as a positive roster move, if it weren't for the fact that we're going to have to listen to Hank's mouth.

But now that I know it isn't just Goodell trying to promote this international expansion nonsense, it makes me worried for the entire human race.

Take it easy on Cimini's intern. He has to go back to school soon.

@__fense @jvsvn I can only recall Hill getting one target during all of the passing drills. A crossing route that he dropped. Brandon Dixon was getting a lot of time on coverage on the outside receivers. All of the outside guys, Decker, Nelson, Gates, were going at him hard and fully running out the go routes well down the field. All of those guys caught at least one long pass. When Hill wasn't targeted he'd ease up and sort of hang his head on the way back to line of scrimmage. He seemed frustrated by not getting the ball. At least that's the way it seemed to me. I want Hill to succeed.  I hope he puts it together. But today I saw a guy who is in his third year being pulled to the side to do remedial drills on how to catch with his hands. Decker looked really good, Kerley looked really good, Gates looked really good, Ford looked really good, Nelson looked really good. Hill didn't do anything today that would inspire much confidence. It's only one practice so it might be totally meaningless, I hope it is. But that's what I saw today.

@Bent @jvsvn First ever. period. I live in NYC and took the train from Penn Station and then walked back and forth from the train station. It was something of a pilgrimage.

I heard an interesting bit from Chris Carter on the radio that when he played with the Eagles, Buddy Ryan encouraged the rivalry between offense and defense (including fighting) in training camp, which ended up negatively impacting the season, especially because the defense was so much better (sound familiar?).

@williamg1 @drjreefer

He was pretty much untouched his whole way to the endzone. I'd say that was more well designed and executed than it was a showing of Gates' skill.

@Disgruntled Jets Fan Maybe this is one of the lessons Rex learned from his father's mistakes. Rex is pretty vocal about how guys need to compete but also  "need to take care of each other." It sounds like it might be a reaction to Buddy's approach.
