Junk Drawer: Half-in and half-out on free agency

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

While negotations have begun, the official opening of free agency doesn’t begin until 4PM on Tuesday.  With that said, it is not as if nothing is happening.  Here’s a quick crash course.

Cro cut — It seems unlikely that the Jets will be bringing back Cromartie and multiple media outlets have tied the Jets to another defensive back that the team seems set on bringing in.  While we’ll miss Cro, the Jets always appreciated his play but have been prepared to pull the ripcord on him as soon as he started breaking down physically.  From what we hear, there were those in the Jets front office who didn’t think he’d have lasted at his level of play even this long.  Cimini wrote an interesting and very salient point on Cro, that he “relies on speed, not technique. If his speed is compromised, he’s not the same player.” We saw that last year and bringing him back would have only been a stopgap for a year at most.

Safety valve — Cutting $9.5 million off the salary cap in the form of Cromartie seems to have necessitated the Jets activity among defensive backs in free agency.  No sooner did I write this monstrosity than all this started getting into the public view.   Typical Bassett move.  We still think that the Jets are locked in on signing Verner and while they might be expressing interest in free agent safeties, their first priority would still be a guy like Alterraun Verner.  If they can sign a top safety to go with it? Then all the better.

Tracking the tracker — Bill Polian has forgotten more about football than I will ever remember, but his free agency tracker on ESPN is a tough sell for me.  While I like knowing where players are slated to go his ranking seems wildly out of whack.  In it he ranks players by their potential value in free agency.  It looks like his estimations will be pretty far off with the Jets.  As for other players, S Antoine Bethea lists among the top players on his board … bias much?

Guard play — The Jets have been tied to a few guards so far at the start of free agency.  Last year the Jets had a chance to pull the trigger on a player who is widely considered to be one of the top guards in this year’s class and they didn’t do it.  Now it’s a year later and while the Jets might have interest again in Geoff Schwartz, they aren’t going to be the only team. Apparently at the Combine there was quite a buzz about Schwartz.  While Schwartz shone for the Chiefs down the stretch, the man he replaced is no slouch either.  Jon Asamoah is coming into his own and is another player that the Jets might want to sign, but according to ESPN’s Adam Caplan one source told him it would be a “small upset” if Asamoah doesn’t land in Atlanta, even though the Jets are in the running.

Receiver radar — On the whole, the wide receiver market has been almost painfully quiet.  While there’s been a lot of activity among defensive linemen, defensive backs, offensive linemen the chatter on skill position players has been very light.  It is likely a sign of the talent at the spot, but expect the talk to pick up quickly on guys like Golden Tate, Emmanuel Sanders and others.

All quiet on Vick — Speaking of quiet … what about Mike Vick?  While there’s been a lot of speculation on Vick, there’s been very little concrete information.  Understandably, Vick is a polarizing figure and so we’re sure that many teams want as much radio silence on the veteran quarterback until his next destination starts to crystallize.

I'll take Doug Baldwin for a 2nd (RFA tender) or 3rd via trade. The second round hasn't been kind to us: Dorrian Booze, Alex Vandyke, Stephen Hill, Vlad Ducasse, etc. When he scored in the SB, he showed that he can step up BIG and that's something we just don't have on offence.

Asamoah is from Illinois. 1st round pic 2008 6'/4" 305lbs Athletic physical and lean. These guys are usually are your best guards, Asamouh heading to the top of that list I believe soon.

Schwartz out of L.A Drafted in the 7th round 2008. by the Panthers went to Minnesota and then to then Chiefs. Nfl .com discription of him as  naturally strong mountain of a man 6/4 340 injured 2011 out for the season.

I like Asamoah.

Im starting to think that Plan A is to resign howard and get one of the draft picks to play RG. But now im thinking plan B is to sign a RG and have a competition for RT. Just a though anyone else think this holds water?

Does anyone think that we are waiting to cut homles and sanchez to push the dead money to 2015. i think if we cut them the dead money is at 12.5 for this year

Like many, I suspect that the Jets will plug a few holes—at least in terms of depth—through free agency, which will give them greater flexibility in the draft.

So although it's great to throw a name like Verner's around, I suspect (given Idzik's general approach) to see a bunch of modest hold-the-fort signings with the real help and buidling coming via the draft, with the idea of saving the big bucks for taking care of their own eventual free agents (read Wilkerson) down the line.

@bob  Asomoah is receiving a huge push from the Falcons, right now they're the favorites to land him, per the Twitterverse.

@greggreen  I said yesterday that this is a possibility and then Jason tweeted the same thing.

However, neither of us expect them to actually do this.  I think it's more a case of you might as well keep that option open, but probably won't need to do it.

@greggreen  I think Sanchez could be a June 1st cut. which would save 11.5m this year and leave 3.6 for next year. Doing the June 1 with Holmes only gains an extra 1.25m, so I am not sure it is worth it.

I am not sure it is worth leaving either on at their current cap numbers at all.

@greggreen

I don't think that at all.....with this Free Agent market, we're not going to spend all our money.

@r_in_ct  I would be pissed if they don't bring in some really good free agents. I keep saying they are in a perfect storm (in a good way) to improve their team dramatically.

1. Really good available fa's that add to an already solid foundation like Verner, Asamoah, Schwartz, Tate, Nicks.

2. A deep draft that is perfectly set up for us to get lots of playmakers.

3. Our young guys are coming into peak form.

4. QB's in place and improving.

5. $$$ to spend.

@r_in_ct  To be fair we really have no idea what idzik is gonna do with capspace. we have gone through 1 offseason with him as the GM.

@r_in_ct  In most situations I agree with you, but Verner is 25, and won't be 26 until December. He's a guy who is a foundation-setter.

I like it smart. Very well said..

The Jets are very young and still in the rebuilding phase.

defensive line is fixed." I say I say" its time to make the offensive line as bad as the defensive line..

Zach Martin and David Yankee..

@r_in_ct  If they only go after hold-the-fort guys, and focus solely on the draft, it will take years before the Jets are contending. While I'm not for wasteful spending, I sure hope they go after some top guys in FA.

@Brendan @bob

I know that what their saying.

CB and Guard should be at the top of the Jets list I think at this juncture.

It really would take stress off this team heading into the draft.

@Bent Do you know when Holmes' bonus comes up? Mark's is the 25th, so they could hold him a while, but Holmes' comes up soon, doesn't it?

@a57se @greggreen  "with this Free Agent market, we're not going to spend all our money. "

I don't know if we are or not, but I definitely agree we probably shouldn't.

@a57se @greggreen  Not all, but a good amount. Why would we wait? I know we'll have to pay the sons but by then we'll be replacing aging and expensive vets, guys like Brick, Harris etc.

@Brendan @r_in_ct Its an underrated aspect of signing verner. This guy isnt even supposed to decline for another 5-6 years

@Brendan @bob  Verner is more suited for zone coverage than a man-to-man safety.  I think we should be going after someone who plays more man coverage.

@Brendan @bob

Asolutely Brendan I agree. I'm thinking Jets an Howard are close I don't think Howard is as popular outside the Jets circle I think he was rated 47th among tackles n the league. I'm hoping.

Brendan
Brendan

@bob I'd really like him back, too. He's started 32 games and is entering his prime. BUT, if he signs elsewhere, the team will have options.

I'm with you, though, I like the idea of building on the existing foundation the team has. If Howard wants too much and makes that impossible, though, the team's gotta be ready to move on.

bob

@Brendan @bob

Howard I'm hoping that he's here if he isn't

that will be really bad.. we need Howard he still I hope has an upside.

Brendan
Brendan

@bob I'd love if they could sign Verner, Asomoah/Schwartz and bring back Howard. That and maybe a couple cheap veteran signings is a nice pre-draft FA period imo.

@Brendan @Bent  Thursday.  He'd need to be cut on Wednesday to avoid it.

@greggreen @Brendan @Gavin Buck

It's more complicated than that.  Anyone you sign is going to increase your cap commitments in future years too.

Eating the money now while they have the space to do so is likely happening though, so that's a solid point.

greggreen
greggreen

@Brendan @Gavin Buck  I could be wrong about this but. We have so much cap space this year couldnt we just eat the 12.5 and get that off the books for 2015. In theory couldnt we spend all 47 million and be set to have 12.5 mill in cap space in 2015 by not doing anything?

Brendan
Brendan

@Gavin Buck That's what I recall hearing, too. Holmes will be cut this week, then, Mark could hang around for another couple.

Bytor
Bytor

@Brendan @Bytor  Just to be clear, I don't want us to turn into the Redskins. Sooooh:

Flashy signing=Verner

Solid O-line=Asamoah

Vet depth=Jones

Draft=out of our minds

This assumes we do sign Howard.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bytor Oh, I think they're going to spend, but maybe just one pretty piece with some other veteran depth signings and shoring up the OL. I don't think we'll see many "flashy" signings, things like $10 mil for Decker or stuff like that.

Bytor
Bytor

@a57se @Bytor @greggreen  Just think if we don't spend a bit. Are we going to draft another guard and cb and go through yet another season struggling to get it together. I'd be happy if we come out of free agency with Asamoah/Schwartz plus Verner.

If we're going into the draft having only picked up Sanders and a cut rate cb I'll be really pissed.

Brendan
Brendan

@Bytor You need to be open to spending most of your available cap space, but that shouldn't be the goal. If you walk away this offseason with $20 mil in cash on-hand, so be it.

I happen to think there are values at every position the Jets' need to upgrade, plus some elite talents. They have a chance to make a big move in terms of talent on the roster, so I hope they do it.

But the June 1st cuts won't impact that much, so I don't think the team will pursue it. I think they're holding these guys more to try and trade them, if possible.
