Justin Gilbert to visit Jets

Justin Gilbert, a cornerback coming out of Oklahoma State, will visit the Jets this week, he tweeted on Monday.

https://twitter.com/JGil_4/status/458086613050851328

He will also visit the Broncos, Lions and Falcons.

Gilbert is listed at six feet and 202 lbs. He is projected to go in the top 15 picks.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Gilbert and Darqueze Dennard are the two interchangeable names that keep coming up as the two cornerbacks most likely to be drafted before the 20th pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

Gilbert is said to have more upside due to his athleticism, size and speed.  But in terms of pure technique, Dennard seems to be the choice as evidenced by Mike Mayock ranking Gilbert as his third best corner on his board.

If there is a run on receivers before the Jets get to pick, they might be choosing Dennard or Gilbert (or both) among a group of players at other positions (tight end, offensive line, etc.).  If the choice is between Gilbert and Dennard?  It might come down to personal preference.  Dennard seems more ready to come in and play solid football from day one, while Gilbert has the athletic upside but might need patience to allow his technique to catch up.

I've seen Dennard slipping to late 1st, and even out of the 1st, in a couple of recent mocks.

Wow sure would be nice if both these guys where at 18 have to make a choice I would love to hear that debate in the war room.

Gilbert and Dennard are "only" rookies so how much can we really expect from them in a first year. How much higher ceiling do they have compared to some of the other newcomers (Patrick, Dowling, Patterson) or our own Walls?

The problem is that any rookie CB is going to have a tough time starting immediately. We should look at a veteran CB becoming available during the upcoming cut downs, or a trade. Not grabbing one of the better FA CB and not getting Jon Asamoah are the two deficiencies I'm most unhappy about with Idzik's plan to date.

If he's there at #18, he's almost definitely the BPA.

Anyone know the procedure of these visits? Do players go through a full workout with drills, etc & then an interview?

I'm refusing to endorse drafting this guy until we get the team from "Who do you think you are?" to prove he's not related to Sean Gilbert.

@Stanley Bostitch  Will be gone top 10 I think. Steelers will either take Dennard or OBJ I think & then we will have to make a choice between whoever the Steelers didnt pick vs Cooks, Fuller, Roby.

@Gregers Jungersen  There is no comparison any of our holdovers, save Milliner,  have to either of the two guys mentioned here. The Roby from Ohio St. is also very talented but his mysterious down year last year should raise some serious red flags at pick #18! I would not go there, but as our new "bean counter" decided to sit back and watch as all the top free agent corners signed elsewhere I'm thinking corner could well be the way we are forced to go. (Unless a certain WR from Clemson somehow made it to our pick at 18?(yeah right, dream on!)

Not sure I understand the point.

@ramble914 Asamoah didn't start every game he could have last season, losing time to Geoff Schwartz, who started the first game of the season, then finished the season and was the starter in the playoffs.  He has never been All-Pro or in the Pro Bowl.  I'm not saying he isn't a good player, but he's an average RG and the Jets re-signed last year's RG, Colon, who played well and was a team leader.  Asamoah isn't much, if any, of an upgrade.

Now, if you're talking LG, then Schwartz might've been the better candidate, but Idzik invested a 3rd round pick in Winters and he started 12 games.  Like it or not, the team seemingly views Winters differently from us.  Besides changing Howard, the OL is 80% intact and Breno shouldn't have too much of a learning curve as he was in a "running" WCO with the Seahawks.

If Winters is a disaster in camp and the Jets need to pick up a LG, there should be vets cuts during training camp and the Jets have enough $$$ to sign somebody and that's if a draft pick, UDFA or existing OL, like Campbell or Schlauderoff doesn't beat him out.  OL just isn't in bad shape; in fact, it's a strength.

I think the point is, we can't rely on a rookie to start without expecting to be burned through the air regularly.

I just wonder if any of those other new guys could help us out so we can stay true to BPA @ 18

I agree with this...and a short term stop gap is preferable to a multi-year pick-up if your future starter is either already on the roster or you're about to draft him.

@ramble914 @williamg1  Numerous LSU fans/analysts have said Landry was better than ODB. Also, when you consider he only had 2 all purpose TDs in SEC play, I am really failing to see why people are so enamored with him. I think Cooks is the better player, and would prefer the Jets to pass on ODB.

Gregers Jungersen

I'm talking about the ceiling. Of course you take a CB in first round if they have potential to become difference makers with experience. Obviously DRC always had a high ceiling, but until last season he had never reached it. And if Jets had brought DRC in last year nobody would have expected him to deliver like he did for Broncos. Are there any of our new CBs that could break out under Rex and reach an unfulfilled potential? Or are they just mediocre players where the best we can hope for is a backup role?

MPTG_Frank
MPTG_Frank

But with that logic, you'd never select a CB in Rd 1 if your strategy is BPA.

@Gregers Jungersen  We're going against the Lions, Bears, Packers, Broncos next year.... We might need a corner.

And none of the new guys can play to the level Cro played last year?

@SackDance99 @Gregers Jungersen  I think the short term/long term trade-off debate could be relevant at any position, but cornerback is one where some people think the Jets can't survive without adding an immediate contributor.

@WW85 @ramble914I agree.  Cooks was a force and bore the brunt of being the focal point of the passing offense at Oregon State and still put up ridiculous numbers.  He's short, so that means he'll have a big negative on his scouting report.  If he were 6-0 or taller, he'd be in the conversation for best WR in the draft.  128 receptions for 1,730 yards...that's amazing production at the FBS level.

WW85

@ramble914  Watching all the film publicly available on OBJ vs Cooks, it seems to me that Cooks stands above OBJ.  But so many pro scouts love Beckham over Cooks & I don't really understand why. OBJ does have 2" longer reach, but Cooks is faster & stronger. Both run great routes. OBJ has bigger hands. Cooks just had a much more prolific college career & we need a guy who has seen a lot of throws.

@jetlife @ramble914 @williamg1

I disagree! Especially when you consider LSU's pro day where Landry couldn't catch a cold, and Beckham caught everything in sight. I'll stick with Beckham at 18 over Landry and Cooks.
