Unfortunately, it looks as if Dustin Keller won’t be playing against the Jaguars come Sunday, according to the Star-Ledger.
Dustin Keller is listed as doubtful to play in Jacksonville Sunday, but in Rex Ryan’s terminology that “means he’s not going.” The Jets’ tight end did not practice today due to the ankle injury he suffered last weekend against Arizona.
He has not practiced all week.
A lot was supposed to ride on this season for Dustin Keller. Keller has expressed desire to stay in New York with the Jets after this season and with the last year of a contract on the line — the team was notably silent about extending him going into next year. With little cap space already for next year it’s going to be worth paying close attention to how that particular storyline plays out.
Last year, Dustin Keller had 65 receptions and five touchdowns. This year Keller has only played in eight games due to a series of injuries in a downgraded version of the offense. Still, his catch rate in an abysmal offense is an astromical 77.7%. Cumberland on the other hand is still above the average completion percentage for Sanchez, but has been a culprit of some bad routes and tipped passes. Cumby has caught the ball at 60% and while he’s playing at close to replacement level, he’s got a long way to go before he’ll be as effective as Keller.
Keller has to be frustrated that he’s having this kind of a year at this point in his career. For the Jets though, even if they want to extend Keller, I would guess that his health this year will be a big factor in any negotiations going forward.
