LB Edds signed; CB Lankster cut

The Jets continued making roster moves into Labor Day night, signing linebacker A.J. Edds and releasing  cornerback Ellis Lankster (Jets,  Sept. 1).

Earlier Monday, the Jets signed cornerback Phillip Adams,  who had been released by Seattle.

Edds (6 foot 4, 256 pounds) was released by the Jets Saturday after leading the team in tackles (25) in the preseason.  He was drafted by the Dolphins in 2010 out of Iowa, but has only played 11 NFL games  (both in 2011) after sustaining  ACL injuries in 2010 and 2012.

Last year, the Patriots cut Edds in camp. Edds played two games with New England and nine with Indianapolis in 2011.

Lankster, a fifth-round pick by Buffalo in 2009 from West Virginia, played the past three seasons with the Jets.

People act like Idzik can force a player to sign with the Jets. A player decides what team he is going to play on when a free agent. Every free agent is not dying to join the New York Jets. Some guys prefer to take a little less money and stay put rather than moving their families. Some choose teams they feel have a better shot at being Super Bowl contenders.

WTF? Im guessing Lankster asked to be released.

You ask them to do something about the secondary..........they do....then you complain

.....What do you want?

Can someone please explain to me why Josh bush is still on this roster???

Ellis Lankster is the best gunner we had on our roster and Josh Bush does squat yet we cut Lankster and keep Bush???????????????????????

I am baffled.

We addressed our CB situation this offseason by getting rid of Cro and Lankster, and replacing them with a safety and training camp cuts just week before the season starts.

But, hey, why be concerned?

Mind boggling, out all the players cut around the league couldn't we find value to pick up? What about RB Henry Josey, that's someone we can pick up and develop and who might be an impact player as a back, a gadget player or special teamer.

i think Lankster will be back

they ll cut ethier Hakiim or Powell

no way do we keep 7 WR

It would be cool to resign him, just so those that are arguing that it is worth cutting ties with Lankster, can go back to arguing how vital Lankster is.

Yeah,  our CB situation is less than ideal at the moment.  Idzik signed Dimitri Patterson,  who is a mediocre type CB but capable of starting in this league. People can say he was injury prone but who knew he was a flake and would wind up basically cutting himself from the team.

The Jets have not cut one player that is an impact player.  Most players at the bottom of NFL rosters are pretty interchangeable.  Guys like Lankster and Edds don't make or break teams.  Fans fall in love with their players but don't realize there are a ton of mediocre type players out there.  Fortunately we have difference makers throughout our starting lineup.  When Milliner returns,  our secondary will look much better.  Injuries suck and happen to every team.

I really hope this is something more procedural than anything else and he is back on the roster before Sunday..Does he have to clear waivers or is he a vested vet and can sign anywhere now? I cant believe he would clear waivers with pettine and sutton around.... I hope they know what they are doing...

OT: A Hunt's Point man parked his Honda CRV at the side of the road. He got out and secured a chain to a pole; he wrapped the other end around his neck. He got back in his vehicle and hit the gas. The result was his own decapitation. That's pretty creative.

Did the Panthers sign Hill, I heard he worked out for them today

Every team has issues, but this corner situation seems like one our brain trust brought on themselves. I'm going to let go and let Rex. He's always put a good defense on the field, until he doesn't I'll give him the benefit of the doubt

i will reserve going over the deep end until the minutes after the rookie carr goes off for 300+ yds and 3tds resulting in a raiders W. until then woosah....

It might have to do that we are set at RB...

@Frank Monastra They just picked up Powell...it'd be rather strange for them to just drop him again.  Hakim is pretty much set for special teams, he's not getting cut.

@bklyndude I think the main concern here is that it seems doubtful that either Adams or McFadden is better than Lankster, so it's hard to figure this out.

He's the 2nd corner we've cut that was a starter at some point this preseason. Thats probably not how they planned it

Carr May throw for 300 yards, but he may also get sacked 5 times and have 3 turnovers. Jets 27-17

I'm actually glad the rookie is playing.

Nothing this GM does surprises me."

Yeah, me either. Last season this piece of crap GM got us to 8-8 with a rookie 2nd round pick QB with no weapons. And this off-season, he signed Decker and CJ and Vick (Idzik wouldn't know talent if he tripped over it.)

He is on the hot seat....if we get to 9-7 or 10-6 and get to the playoffs....he is a goner !

(Oh, and by the way, Idzik stopped all the leaks and gives jack-sh-t to the beat writers consistently...I say fire him now)

Lankster has been on the team for a few years.  Rex knows what type of player he is capable of being.  The fact that Rex doesn't play him more speaks volumes.  I just don't see this as something that awful.  Lots of guys just got cut and everybody has a few favorites.

Which players have we released in recent years that have gone on and accomplished hugh things......Danny Woodhead ?

Maybe they do plan to bring him back. Seems like it's a process that could continue through the next few days.

He better eat this one , because the next 5 or 6 (assuming they all play) could be nightmares

Exactly. Rather face him in his 1st NFL game, regardless of what he turns into

@1969JAN12th @Ron Alexander @a57se

The GM got us to 8-8? You just said that QB had no weapons. Isn't that on the GM?

Fact is, it was Rex Ryan who got that 8-8. And the GM rewarded him with a 1 year extension, while he goes long term with the roster.

Agreed. Just pointing out that we cut two.

1969JAN12th

@williamg1 @1969JAN12th @Ron Alexander @a57se So....I get it. Every bad thing about the Jets is all on Idzik...and every good thing about the Jets is on Rex.

Convoluted logic.

How about Idzik being on the PLUS side of arguably the worst trade in NFL history. Revis to Bucs.

Drafting Pryor ? BossHogg ? Milliner ? ...and if Geno Smith becomes the QB that we have been looking for ?...who gets credit for that ?

Some fans on this blog can't wait for Idzik to be fired just because they don't like our CB situation (which as far as I can tell hasn't cost us a game yet). But hey....he kept Bush and not Lankster

He must be a bad GM.

@williamg1 You realize this is a regular occurrence in the NFL this time of year, right?

It's like fans completely forgot that turnover at the bottom of the roster is going to happen, and often.

bklyndude
bklyndude

@williamg1 @bklyndude @Disgruntled Jets Fan

And it's still possible for Lankster to return.  This is the time of the year when guys get cut and resigned all the time.  Guys are losing their minds about depth guys.

Every team goes crazy trying to get their 53 right.  We already resigned Edds.  Sometimes the timing of the cuts minimizes the risk in losing a player like Lankster.
