Link: Brooks breaks down the blitz

We love our film breakdowns here at TJB and as an added bonus this one’s actually in English!

NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks provides some superb analysis of the Jets’ blitz packages, together with footage and diagrammed breakdowns like the one below.

Note that in the above alignment, Bryan Thomas, highlighted in red, is the weakside pass rusher. This is the role Quinton Coples will play this year, which will hopefully add a further dimension to the defense.

As Brooks says:

The bodacious defensive guru has promised to restore the aggressive mentality that carried Gang Green to consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances in the 2009 and ’10 campaigns. During those seasons, Ryan acted as the defensive play caller for units that finished first and third, respectively, in total defense. He utilized blitz-heavy tactics with his initial teams to create chaos for quarterbacks in the pocket, while limiting available seams and creases for runners in the ground game.

Let’s not forget that similar comments about the defense returning to their aggressive roots were made this time last year. However, the Darrelle Revis injury may have changed these plans.
