Link: GM for a day

While laced with predictably tiresome sarcasm throughout, this article from Sports on Earth does present an interesting outsider’s take on what the Jets should do this offseason.

The crux of their plan involves getting rid of dead weight, making moves to bolster the depth and dynamism on offense and setting a precedent by extending Muhammad Wilkerson early. They have some interesting ideas on potential offensive free agent additions.

So what do you think of this plan? Where would you improve upon it?

DRAFT - I'm a big believer in drafting BPA - especially in the first round. If Watkins falls I would consider trading up. If not, BPA - Lee, Donald, Ebron, Gilbert, Martin or Pryor. WalterFootball has us taking Kyle Van Noy in the second... I would love that pick. However, we may be targeting Garopollo in the second - I wouldn't mind that either. After that BPA leaning on needs - WR, OL, DL (depth) RB, OLB, S, TE. I wouldn't mind Allen Robinson in the second. Rounds 3-4 I would like either Ward, Abbrederis, Seastrunck, Billy Tuner, Grimble, Marcus Smith, Dakota Dozier, Deonne Bucannon, or McCullers. Fifth round on a would take some high risk high reward players like Colt Lyerla, TJ Jones, Pierre-Louis.

FA: This would depend heavily on the draft. I would not resign Cromartie. Grimes is a better option if we are looking to sign a CB over 30. Ideally, I would like us to target Verner (25 years old) as a long term No 1 CB. I would love Byrd @ safety but with the Bills almost certainly wanting a tag and trade deal, its a pipe dream. Ward? If we don't draft a QB this year, we need to sign vet QB to legitimately challenge Geno (possibly QBDK or McCown). Resign Pace if he comes cheap and depth @ the OLB position (possibly O'Brien Schoffield from SEA). Resign Austin Howard and a jorneyman G (Asomoah or Saffold) in case Winters, Aboushi, Campbell and any OL we draft this year doesn't pan out. I like to the idea of resigning Colon if he signs @ league minimum. If we don't draft a RB, I like the idea of Tate or Brown (which wouldn't certainly mean the end for Goodson). I am fan of Cumberland and wouldn't mind if he resigned - but we need to either draft or sign another decent TE. If we do not draft DL, I would sign some journeyman DL to ensure we are able to properly rotate players and keep them fresh. Resign Reed only if he is willing to take on more of a mentorship role, play situationally, and sign for cheap. Lastly, at minimum, we need to sign a FA WR with legitimate No.2 past performance (Sanders, Maclin, or Nicks) regardless of who we draft.

CLEANING HOUSE: I would cut Holmes, Cro, and Sanchez.

Kirk Michael
Kirk Michael

FA: Maclin offer him better then the eagles/ or if we could and had to would love Boldin for two years. Next Mccluster put him every where out of backfield in the slot on the outside and he would be our speed guy we need to catch the ball out throw back field while being a return man. Chad Winehart at guard so Winters can develope more. Clemons at safety to play along side Landry and Allen will be in the rotation and continue to learn so when Landrys contracts over Allen can hop in there. Vick because he knows the system plus he can teach Geno when to run.

Resign: Howard, Colon (leader ship), Folk, and Cumby.

Cut: Sanchez and Holmes

Renegotiate: Cro for a four year deal and I just know something like that's gonna happen but since he has done everything asked of him and he also has become a leader and our best corner and when healthy a top 3 corner in the AFC., Harris just renegoiate because anyone can play behind our front 3 if he wont say bye get a younger more athletic mlb in the draft.

Draft: 18. Ebron, than trade our 2nd and one of our 3rds to get Benjamin. After that draft depth at o line, safety, and olb.

Depending on the cutting of MS n Holmes + renegotiating of Cro and Harris plus the raise in the cap possibly moving up 5 mil more to 135 if we can extend Mo before the season we will if not we can wait becuz he said he wont hold out.

So Like usual our defense is going to be very good but better this year with all of pur young guys getting better and Coples expected to have a break out year along wit Milliner and Barnes back to terrorize qbs but this year we'll have an offense we'll have a tight end with Vernon Davis type athleticism, a back/ receiver who can catch out the backfield and all over causing mismatches, Benjamin causing mismatches with his size and now having a huge redzone target. We'll have a better line bringing in a vet guard. N we'll still have Kerley in the slot with our tandum of backs in Ivory and Powell n we wont need a back to receive out the backfield with little Dexter. If Geno steps up we are good enough to contend with anyone.

I wouldn't mind bringing in Kerry Rhodes at all.

j3tsfan29
j3tsfan29

If I was gm I would do the following:

Sign Byrd at S-11 mil lockdown the safety we haven't had since Rhodes.

Talib at CB-8mil replacing revis with a cheaper but better then CRo cb.

Cut/resign CRo 4 mil if not let him walk.

Sign roger saffold at G/T-8mil plays every position on the OL sans center.

Kellen Clemens at qb-1mil knows the jets, played well in Bradford's absence, we have a new OC, and is cheap. If we don't resign CRo I would invest more money into this position. Go after McCown, or Vick like it or not Marty is real familiar with Vick.

Knowshon Moreno at rb-4mil finally a rb who can catch the ball, pass block and run, may give us ability to cut Goodson.

Cut Sanchez and Holmes.

5 mil for rookies

Leaving 8 mil.

Resign pace and colon and Cumberland.

3 mil should cover that leaving 5 mil.

Golden Tate for 5 mil.

That gives us a S,CB x2, G,RB,vet QB,TE, WR and PR/KR. With the entire draft to concentrate on WR, TE, ILB with flexability to move up and get the studs we want.

Obviously the contracts at wich I'd sign the fa's are bloated. Still would be an awesome haul and allows us to move up and snag Watkins in draft. Also if they are bloated allows room for more wiggle or to carry over to next year.

Sorry for the long post, would love feedback.

Either way, he is very talented, but a month of sub-40 percent completion rates cannot be whisked away as "rookie lumps."

You know, as much as this guy really just focused on the offense, and the other glaring thing thats wrong with this article like the thought that Evans will still be there at 18, as well as leaving no solution for letting Cro go if thats what we choose to do... he was spot on with this statement, as well as putting "rookie lumps" in quotations. Because as much as Sanchez would have me like... "...what was that?..."... Geno's mistakes, most noteably the fumble in the end zone ball behind the back deal, stepping out of the end zone in preseason, and most of his interceptions... his mistakes made me wonder if he can really play the position at all because they were SOOOO BAD!!! Like REALLY BAD! As much as he looked good, his mistakes were downright confusingly disgusting. And yet I still have hope for Geno. As much he disgusted me with his mistakes, I've come to like Geno, and I'm rooting for him other than for the obvious reason that he is our QB.

And for everyone who wants to trade up in this draft... are you kidding? Does that really make sense with this particular draft and our needs? Doesn't trading down make so much more sense and picking up extra picks?

Bent Bassett, anyone who knows when does revis deals third round pick become official? Reason I ask is Tampa has listened to offers for revis already. Man imagine if the pats traded for revis. I'd lose it!!

Teams are exploring dealing for Bucs corner Darrelle Revis, according to league sources, with some believing there is a good chance he will be dealt by the start of the league year.

During the combine, sources from several teams began reaching out to the Bucs about the possibility they might deal corner Darrelle Revis, and rival executives believe a deal could be possible.

i wonder if we can  trade  sanchez ??? this may be our best chance   with so many teams that need QBs instead of cutting him and getting nothing

The Jets need to draft well.

Get a couple of hall of fame receivers, HOF safety, HOF Linebacker, HOF guard, and a stud Tight End and running back while we are at it.

I agree that this year we  "can finish building the foundation" ...

and I liked the "waiting for Hill is like waiting for the Great Pumpkin... "  quote.

Good stuff!!

Mike Evans can be the player the Jets thought Stephen Hill would become, because waiting for Hill has become like waiting for the Great Pumpkin.

so TRUE....hahaha....great point by the author -

I would pick up veteran WR and get the better TE in the draft.  If we can get Ebron, he is going to be light years better than the existing TE free agents.  Then, get a rookie WR in the third round.  In the second round, get one of the top OG's.   PS - I haven't given up on Hill.

scott g
scott g

we need WRs  see…what u can get for Hill he's hurt and he hasn't lived up to his potential   get a veteran  QB  draft a  cb  to replace cro if u don't resign him on a reduced rate  wilson is better in the slot and walls isn't a starter   id say draft a TE but after Ebron and Amaro the  TEs drop and the jets have at least 3 TEs to cover it up till next yr  o and we may need a RB depending on what happens with Goodson

jetlife

@jma020  He didn't play last year, wants too much money, and Rex disliked him enough to trash him in his book. I'd say there is very little chance of this.

I would draft a RB

j3tsfan29

I messed up my math.after the 5 mil for rookies It would leave 7 mil and 4 mil with incentives should get Tate.

Trading up in this draft makes more sense than trading down and getting more picks. How many picks do the Jets need. 12 should be more than enough. This draft is loaded with talent.

@j3tsfan29  Third day of the league year - March 13th.

What if the pats trade for him, before the deadline.... Ouch, the sting of that would last a long long time!

jdb4

@jaym

True, but the deal has to be done by March 13 for the Jets to not receive a 3rd round pick.  Could be very difficult to pull off.

Brendan
Brendan

@jaym  Lot of leaps in that report on NFL.com.

Of course rival execs think a trade is possible, they haven't been shut down yet, and the Bucs would be dumb to shut them down at this point. This is like when every team in the league calls Arizona about Larry Fitz every spring.

Brendan
Brendan

@scott g  Answer honestly:

You're the GM of Oakland, would you trade anything for Mark? Or sign one of McCown/Campbell/Hill/Vick to be the back-up/starter/mentor to the rookie that Sanchez would have been anyway?

a57se
a57se

@harvlis

I don't see anything that says Ebron will step right in and do anything other than be a rookie...... he is raw.

jdb4
jdb4

@harvlis

I haven't given up on Hill either. I don't know what most fans expected.  Everyone said he was going to need one season, possibly two to full develop.  He has already shown he can get open (see Bent)

Just be patient.

scott g

@harvlis  OG why ? we have aboushi and campbell we drafted last yr

Brendan

@scott g  Hill is only 22 years old, can't give up on him yet. He costs essentially nothing and he still has potential.

j3tsfan29
j3tsfan29

They might franchise him and if so I wouldn't go for it. I'm hoping they don't.

Bent

@j3tsfan29  Probably only need just over $2m to sign rookies ... but then again you need to leave a bit of a buffer for next season (guys on injured reserve that count against the cap, replacing midseason cuts etc).

You also need to account for a cap saving equivalent to the minimum salary for every player you add because one guy will drop out of the top 53 salaries.  And you can probably use lower cap numbers for each player because year one cap hits are usually lower than the average value.

Don't worry too much about the math though, you're in the right ballpark.

Alasdair Barratt
Alasdair Barratt

@j3tsfan29  I think he'd need to renegotiate a long term deal before being traded.  That's a hell of a cap hit otherwise.

And we all know how hard contract negotiations with Team Revis are.

bradysucks

I agree that Evans may be gone by 18 but don't forget that the Jets have a lot of draft picks and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Jets move up a few spots and trade for Evans just like the Rams did last year when they traded up for Tavon Austin....

Even if we miss out on Evans the Jets will end up with Matthews, Lee, or Ebron....and all of them would help the Jets

harvlis
harvlis

@a57se @harvlis Everybody who comes to the NFL from College is raw. He is as raw as Clowney or Manziel or any other rook.  Ebron has the size, athletic ability, and talent to become a serious weapon.  Like any rookie, it will be up to his coach and his teammates, as to whether he lives up to his potential.  When I watch him play, he reminds me of the best the NFL has had to offer at the position.  Picking at 18, if we can get the best player at his position, I call that a good pick.

@Brendan @scott g  His third year will hopefully be a charm...if not I think we'd both be ready to let him go...

Thanks bent. I figure honestly that roger saffold for instance would come cheaper and allow more room but wanted to paint the big picture that we could get quite a few pieces. Appreciate your thoughts nonetheless!!

Mike DeRosa

@j3tsfan29 Talib is a FA. So I doubt they can afford both Revis and Talib. But they could replace him with Revis. I don't think they have the money for it though.

@scott g Coleman in a later round would be a nice project pick. Benjamin is huge and fast, but his hards are suspect. I'd probably be okay if they took him, his potential is through the roof.

Brendan
Brendan

@scott g And that's all I'd ask you to do, if I was the team. He's young and was a project player when he was drafted, but he needs to start showing some returns now.
