Over at ESPN New York, Rich Cimini shares the first part of his roster evaluation. While the format is the kind of arbitrary ranking list we can expect from everybody (including ourselves, probably) as we all strive for content/filler over the next 6-8 weeks leading up to free agency, there are a couple of interesting nuggets in there.

Firstly, on safety Antonio Allen, he states that “Barring a significant acquisition, Allen is a likely starter.” We’re interested to hear your feedback on this, especially in light of a story on the Jets official site today that reveals that Josh Bush will be staying with Ed Reed during part of the offseason which could suggest Reed is anticipating remaining in the team’s plans.

Secondly, Cimini says the following about right guard Willie Colon:

He’ll be a fallback option for the Jets, who hope William Campbell or Oday Aboushi can step into a starting role in Year 2.

Cimini doesn’t really indicate whether these assumptions are based on any inside information or just his own opinions, but again this would seem to be a strange approach for a team that spent much of the season underachieving on offense largely because they were fielding inexperienced players.

With their available cap room and a surplus of draft picks, how do you expect the Jets to approach filling the safety and right guard positions?

There is no way the Jets are ready to take on top defenses in the current  state of their offensive line.

We seen this year the pocket collapsing at the guard position. sloppy play at times from our right tackle and T.E's blocking however I'll give Howard a pass in the hope he improves his game. Hence getting to our QB to fast.

Mangold and Ferguson is just not enough muscle.

Teams with really good defenses ..Forget about it!... Jets are just no ready.

In the last month of the Jet season "we saw"  Geno progress. In fact Geno had the 2nd highest QB rating in that last month of the season. Indeed he even got better using his legs well. and had better pose in the pocket.

Ok.

The top guards in the draft so far. likely to go in day 2 in the draft are.

Baylors ..............Cyril Richardson

Missippi states... Gabe Jackson

LSU....................Trai Turner.

Stanfords .....David Yankee..( Interesting a nerd). Richard Sherman anybody?

Now there's some under classmen like:  UNC's...Russell Bodine  who can play center or guard..nice pick 3rd round if he's there

Keep your eye on Zack Martin....OT/OG

Martin can quickly develop into a premier starting guard at the next level if he's ask to move inside but based on his performance at the senior bowl it would be a surprise if his name isn't called in the 1st round in mays draft.. Justin Pugh type of player NY Giants 1st pick last year who graded out very well surprise for sure. OH MY a guy who can play guard or tackle very well...if he's there in the 2nd round for the Jets and if they don't pick him then the Jets are nuts.

Also I would like to say.... Thank you........ Thank you.............Thank you very much..

Bringing back Reed next year is a no brainer IF he is used properly in nickel packages and on passing downs. His prescense in the locker room, knowledge of the D and influence on the youngster such as milliner, Allen and bush could be extremely valuable. I don't think it was a coincidence milliners best play came after Reed was signed. Nothing wrong with having another veteran prescense in that secondary.

i could see a project in the mid round at safety. but isnt landry signed through next year. as far as gaurd, i think im the only one the would rather bring in vlad as vet insurance then colon

Based on last season, Antonio Allen has the inside track for starting strong safety. But, as Rex Ryan said about Geno Smith--Let's see who's on our roster before we go naming him the starter. Expect the Jets to pick up at least two safeties--by FA or draft to compete with Allen & Bush.

As for Campbell and Aboushi--they were never even activated for a game in 2013. I doubt either of them will be ready to start in 2014.

I want-no demand a strong draft from the "number crunching" idzik. I hope those new scouts he brought in will yield dividends. they need a huge "seattle like" draft. the kind of been harping about for years on this lovely site.

Yeah, Larry Fitz restructured his contract, so I don't have to live in fear of him winding up in NE, at least not for now.

Ok so now that everyone can see Martin overreacted and is a fraud is there the possibility of signing Richie to play LG?

Anyone have a guess how much Howard would cost? He has to be the biggest priority coming off the books on the offensive side of the ball.  I wouldn't be against giving him $5-6M/year.

What about Dakota Dozier? The "Bull" Dozier looks like he's got some serious muscle.

Oh That's right, Incognito Can't possibly be better than our Guards, right???

Ohh wait......Colon...he can't possibly be better than Colon because Colon tells us every day how GREAT he is and How GREAT the Jets are, right???

I know he can't  Be Better than Vlad....Our .#2 Pick will, without a doubt realize his #2 pick potential this his UMPTEENTH year, Right ??

Nah, Nah we have something better than both of them....Our rookie Winters...he has GREAT potential....must continue to start!!!

Now I got it Baro....you're right, we don't need Incognito !!!

@Hanknaples  "And FYI Almost every player to a man questioned in the NFL (All Dolphins players) said they would LOVE to play alongside Inciognito and have him as a TEAM MATE !!!!", sadly Brendan Hank is PARTIALLY right on this one. During the dolphins investigation several teammates from the dolphins (both current and former) did say that. What Hank is leaving out is that they were all Jeff Ireland guys, a man who's WELL KNOWN reputation can be summarized as "A$$hole", that alone tells you a lot about the guys who made those comments.

"You are INSANE !!....You have NO idea what you are talking about.....do your research !!!!" this is funny because that last time you tried to tell me Marvin Lewis and Brian Billick (a 4-3 coach who was gone from the ravens before they went to a 3-4 and the HC who by his own admission didn't get involved in the DC brought the 3-4 to Baltimore) shows you don't do your research, so here it goes:

1) college - suspended from Nebraska and dismissed from the team at Oregon a week after transferring there

2) Pre-Draft - Despite his impressive physical tools, ESPN Scouts Inc. noted "his inability to control his emotions both on and off the field is such a significant concern that he'll likely slip to the later rounds of the draft."

3) Steve Spags and Richie get into a heated sideline fight in 2009, Bill Devaney (Former GM) told ESPN "Spagnuolo had given Incognito numerous chances to clean up his act, and had put him on notice that the Rams would cut ties with him if he couldn't control his anger" In four years with the Rams from 2006 to 2009, Incognito drew 38 penalties, including seven unnecessary roughness calls, more than any other player during that span

4) Signed with Buffalo for the remainder of 2009 and at the end of the season they didn't want to resign him

5) 2010 signs with the ONE team that wanted him..Miami

6) 2012 - During the Dolphins' annual celebrity golf tournament at the Turnberry Isle Resort and Club in Aventura, FL, a drunken Incognito harassed a female volunteer at the club. He rubbed her private parts with a golf club, pressed his private parts against her buttocks and dumped water in her face. The matter was referred to Dolphins security. Although former Dolphins wide receiver Nat Moore (yet another teammate defending him) apologized to her, the volunteer filed a police report after Incognito didn't personally apologize; the matter was later settled after she signed a confidentiality agreement. This incident didn't come to public light until November 2013. Dolphins coach Joe Philbin subsequently confirmed that the Dolphins were aware of the situation, and had taken "immediate action" in response; he didn't elaborate.

7) how other players view richie - Incognito has garnered attention over the years for perceived dirty play amongst NFL players, coaches, and fans. He has been alleged to have gouged players' eyes, punched players, and made illegal tackles on a regular basis. In 2009, NFL players voted Incognito as the dirtiest player in the league, according to a Sporting News poll.- Just as Antonio Smith as to his long standing grudge with Richie

In all it seems the Jeff Ireland Dolphins seem to like Richie but if you did your research you would easily discover that he is trouble and not worth it.  Overall Brendan's comments "Incognito is still a scummy person. I always maintained that Martin didn't seem to be innocent like he portrayed himself, but Incognito is still an awful human being and a dirty player." are more based on reality and supportive by RE SEARCHABLE events and not opinion.

as for your comment that "Incognito would improve our OL three fold !!!!!" you do know that he is 31 next year right? How is remaining old at guard making us better?

@bradysucks  VLad and Hill were not overdrafted, 2nd rd is where you take a shot at a player with first rd talent but not experience or has a flag of some other sort.  Hill- most had him as a 1st rd grade.  He went to the same school and played the same position as Megatron and Demarius Thomas, but is taller and faster than both of them.  So I could see someone thinking he has potential and developing him.  Unfortunately, his hands were suspect and therein lies the problem.  However he definitely IMPROVED in that area this year and didn't drop many targets, he also improved at getting separattion off press coverage.  What he has a problem with is catching CONTESTED balls.  In the NFL you're not gonna always be wide open. COuple that with his Injury problems and we  are where we are.  But on talent alone he is def a 2nd rd pick.  As for VLAD, you could make the argument that he was drafted a rd too early but I would make the same argument for Winters.  Physically Vlad is the biggest, strongest, most Agile Lineman. You draft that kind f player early.  Problem is he doesn't understand the game, its not native to him, and he doesn't seem to have the mental part down for the NFL.  He's from UMASS and speaks like 5 languages so he's not dumb, but footall smart is a different thing and he just doesn't have it.  2nd rd is where you take a chance on a guy like this.  PAtriots are famous for it and sometimes it doesn't work out.  Remember all world 2nd rd steal WR Vincent Jackson?  How about the awesome CB from VA Ras-I Dowling ? Actually now the latter is on our practice squad.    SO What I'm saying here gents is the league is full of 2nd rd washouts beacuase it is the most dangerous Round- whee people really go into the potential even more than the 1st round.

bradysucks
bradysucks

I got no issues developing guys with potential. Vlad and Hill were overdrafted though and neither guy was worth a second round pick in my opinion. Vlad never cracked the starting lineup for more than a few games and Hill should never have been the starting receiver the past 2 years.

Sure I am going to be unhappy with starters who are not good in comparison to their peers around the NFL who play the same position. If you start for the Jets and don't produce you are gonna get criticized. I never had an issue with Hill, Vlad, or Sanchez as BACK UP players....but as starters they don't cut it in my view

@Disgruntled Jets Fan @bradysucks

I'd prefer to re-sign Colon and Howard but as you know the NFL is a "business" and Idzik I'm sure has a plan.....I am not betting on potential.....but I like to develop players with potential and if Campbell develops he can be another Brandon Moore....

I don't like it though when we draft guys high in the draft with potential and start them before they are ready (Stephen Hill)
