Link: NFL’s Mike Mayock releases positional rankings

Since the Combine starts later this week, NFL Network’s Mike Mayock has released his rankings for all positions.

See the full list here, but here’s his top five receivers prior to the NFL Combine.

Wide receiver
1. Sammy Watkins, Clemson
2. Marqise Lee, USC
3. Mike Evans, Texas A&M
4. Kelvin Benjamin, Florida State
5. Jarvis Landry, LSU

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

It seems rare to see Lee ranked above Evans, but Mayock is known for going against the grain.  His ranking might also speak to Lee’s ability to step into the NFL and produce.  Benjamin has seemed to emerge among pundits as the fourth best receiver in the group, but Landry rounding out the top five is a bit of a surprise and Odell Beckham’s name is conspicuously absent as the fifth best WR in favor of teammate Jarvis Landry.  Landry is regularly landing in the late first round, but also graces many lists as a mid second round pick … maybe this week in Indianapolis will help to change that notion of Landry?

Come on 57, jump on the Geno bandwagon, before you miss it! This kid is it!

Geno is now in Florida training with a QB guru! If that is not taking the bull by the horns, I dont know what is. If anything, this shows his desire to succeed. This kid is a fierce competitor and is hungry! He has all the physicals and just needs some weapons and some time to gel in a pro offense. Geno is for real!

  1. Marty Mornhinweg: “We’re certainly expecting Geno to take the next step." With experience + system knowledge, Smith played more "natural."

Marty Mornhinweg on Self-Scout: Geno “played outstanding 3 of those last 4 games… Those last 4 weeks were what really shined to us.”

So I am going through a 7 round mock draft and it has the Jets going WR, OLB, WR, OG, TE then I get to the 5th round and it has the Jets selection as Kiko ALonso!!!

Jarvis Landry is the guy I really like.

Why isn't Allen Robinson part of the discussion?

I can't wait to see what my first jets Christmas gift is when free agency starts! The draft seems so far!! Exciting season ahead next year boysss

i wanted Dion Jordan badly last year. Was annoyed at the Phins for trading up for him. shows how much i know. this year i think i want Ha Ha if he's there at 18. i'm not as down on the Jets receivers as many are. Kerley and Nelson are solid 2s and can move the chains and Cumberland is a solid contributor that is improving that I hope returns. a lower round TE(Niklas) and receiver(Brandon Coleman or Martavis Bryant) can be had and they can still contribute.

@ifti99  Mayock is the only good announcer other than Chris Collinsworth.  The  rest are useless.  Might as well turn teh sound down without him.

Way to early to say Geno is the answer. In fact it is just as likely that Sanchez will be the answer for another team.

@jake100  Don't get carried away man. He has the ability to, and the drive, but he has to put it together. There's no "train pulling out of the station" on Geno, people just have reservations still. He's starting, so people acting like the team is going to replace him (or should) are wasting time, but people don't have to accept Geno as a long-term answer before he's proven he is one.

frustjetfn
frustjetfn

@jake100 Put down the pom poms and let him prove he's real before you dub him the next coming. If he proves he's real over the next few years, he'll have a career, plenty of $ and plenty of acclaim, but finishing the season with two games that  limited the QB position and that he didn't manage to blow don't mean a thing. Given a similar game plan designed to minimize the position many rookie QB's could finish the game intact.

Bottom line is the jury is still out on him and the most we can expect to see this year is better fundamentals and fewer major mistakes. He's not even close to being a complete NFL starting QB yet. NFL history is full of QB's that looked like bigger stars in their debut and disappeared forever.

@jake100  "Geno Smith prepared for the NFL scouting combine by working out with quarterback guru Chris Weinke at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. A year later, Smith is taking the same approach to his offseason.

Guru? really?

@idothis2  It just goes to show what a crap shoot the selections can be...it's not you. This is why GMs are let go all the time. I'm pretty sure that when Brady got picked in round 6, their wasn't a whole of pundits saying....WOW!

@idothis2  I wanted Dion Jordan first last year too, and many mocks at this time showed him as our first pick... I didn't even study Milliner or especially Richardson much...

@Pat d

The Bengals should sign Sanchez. Let Dalton play the regular season and Sanchez the postseason.

@Brendan @jake100That's EXACTLY what some of us have been saying. Maybe the over-the-top guys will believe it coming from you. - Tks.

@jaygo @jake100Working to improve is great and at least Geno says the right things vs Sanchez, but he hasn't proven anything on the field yet. Just want to keep an even keel (like Geno is lauded for saying) and want to see mostly solid play this year. After all, this is NOT fantasy football. :)

@johnnyl65 Out of curiosity, can you name how many other QB coaches are successful NFL QB's?

My guess is that's a short list. Point? You don't have to be a good player to be a good coach/instructor.

UncleJoesJetFarm

@a57se @jake100  Sanchez won 9 games his first season with a top defense, oline and run game. Geno won 8 with a lot- lot less.

@kniff @idothis2 i liked Milliner, but i didnt look at Richardson until after the jets drafted him. I liked him instantly.

Brendan

@frustjetfn The thing is, a lot of people aren't saying that, and they're actually saying Geno isn't the guy. Or, they'll go on for 500 words about all the things that are bad with Geno's game, then throw a sentence at the end that says "but he could turn into a good QB" to try and get around the "hater" tag. You don't do that, but I do see both sides of it, only it's more obvious when someone on Joey's side does it because it comes off as just silly.

Cam and Russell were no where near as raw as Geno. Fact

Sanchez was outplaying Geno and would have been the starter. Fact

harold

If that is what you took from it, then your missing the point and may simply be stirring the pot

johnnyl65

@harold  Geno beating Sanchez and Wilson beating Flynn,Hmm not very convincing.

harold
harold

You don't have to agree the proof is in the pudding.

Cam broke records as a rookie and was expected to have a very difficult transition. Fact

Who predicted Wilson would be a starter? Almost no one. Fact

Geno was out performing Sanchez in camp until an ankle injury. Fact

MM and Lee get credit but part of that has to go to Weinke when you look at the other folks success.

johnnyl65
johnnyl65

@harold  I also wouldn't credit anyone but Lee and MM for Geno's improvement he still has a long way to go but play calling has a lot to do with the the turn around. I find that Geno wasn't prepared for the NFL so I don't agree.

@harold  I'd like to read something that  re enforces what you're saying Iv'e never heard or read  a word that's called him a guru before.

harold
harold

Cam was very raw and Weinke helped immensely. No one thought Cam would be ready to play at a high level that soon. Wilson was another player who surprised with his NFL readiness. Geno despite his strugles transitioned quicker than expected to a pro style attack. I would say his record is pretty good.

johnnyl65
johnnyl65

@harold  So he's made them the QB's they are today or is he the guy that prepared for the draft?

harold

Cam and Russell Wilson. He is working with Bridgewater this year. Pretty good

johnnyl65
johnnyl65

@Brendan @johnnyl65  I don't think I mentioned anything about how he played. Guru?really? was because I've never heard him turn anyone into top level QB's,I mean that's a big title to just put on anyone.

Brendan
Brendan

@johnnyl65 Fair question, I have no idea. I'm not saying he is, I'm just saying we can't rule him out since he didn't light it up himself (he was like a 45 year old rookie, remember).

johnnyl65
johnnyl65

@Brendan @johnnyl65  Fair enough, tell me who he's successfully coached to be named a guru and maybe I'll change my opinion .

So Geno had the #8 ranked running game & the 11th ranked defense and he was nearly the bottom ranked QB. He gets a pass as a rookie but you are overly optimistic as usual jake100 (just like you were with Sanchez)

Geno has much to prove. As usual you've fallen in love with a QB who has yet to prove himself. We all root for Geno....You just do it blindly based on hope.....Love is blindness. Geno has talent but he has not shown himself to be consistent and you are making assumptions with little evidence to support your claim that Geno will be the answer at QB. His stats were terrible

UncleJoesJetFarm
UncleJoesJetFarm

@bradysucks   Please, the oline this season was #25 with Geno, #3 in 09 with Sanchez. The run game with Sanchez in 09 was #1, almost 180 yds per game, with Geno, #8.   The defense back with Sanchez in 09 was #1 and legit with very few holes. With Geno, the defense  was 11, but at the bottom in pass defense, with Sanchez, the pass defense was #1. There is no comparison to what they had in their rookie seasons, please. Can you imagine if Geno had all that around him, YIKES! The difference is, Geno has the physicals where he doesn't need a top top supporting cast like that, just a solid one with some playmakers and he will do the rest..

bradysucks
bradysucks

@jake100 @a57se

Not really true....Geno had a pretty good running game and a good defense supporting him in 2013. Geno also had a much better offensive coordinator (Morninweg) than Sanchez had in 2009.

Geno is a better QB than Sanchez but he was still pretty terrible most of the 2013 season. Now it is true that Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Troy Aikman etc all had very tough rookie years so there is reason to hope Geno MIGHT improve.....but it is not a given which is why the Jets should draft another QB if a good one on their draft board is available.....
