Link: Peter King thinks Jets make “the most sense” for Vick

Where will Michael Vick land?  No one seems to know much, but Peter King, one of the most connected reporters in the NFL threw out some suggestions in his MMQB article today.

Michael Vick should be in more demand than he is. I keep saying this, and few believe me: Vick’s a very good locker room guy now, a leader, and he’d be a good team guy whether or not he wins the starting job. I think if Vick had been more accurate in his past two years in Philly (.581, .546), offensive coordinator Norv Turner could have been sold on him with the Vikings; I know Vick was very interested in Minnesota. The team that makes the most sense is the Jets, because they have no idea if Geno Smith is their quarterback of the future. Oakland makes sense because the Raiders have no idea what they have either. I’ll give you a dark horse here: San Francisco. Let’s say Vick gets only lukewarm interest to start, or to compete for a starting job. If so, and if the Niners want more than a third-string insurance policy for Colin Kaepernick, Vick might be willing to go to try to win a Super Bowl ring. He turns 34 in June.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

While the Niners offers him a spot among one of the NFL’s top five teams, the one thing it doesn’t offer is a chance to start.  From everything we’ve heard Vick very much wants to continue on as a starter, which is why Minnesota was of real interest.

The Jets have been connected to Vick in many reports over the last few weeks, but everything so far from the likes of King, Adam Schefter and others has been conjecture.  If the Jets are interested in Mike Vick, they are doing a very good job of keeping it quiet.

Vick? No thank you!

Draft a QB or keep developing Simms who DOES have an NFL arm

Its nice to see King has taken time to discuss football in the space he usually writes about bad airline and hotel experiences.

King said this like three weeks ago and we've already had several threads on this but here comes another gratuitous Vick thread.....count me out.

How many craft beers did Vick's agent buy off King with? Two? I don't think this blubbering fool could hold out for a full sixer.

Distraction?  i would give the starting job to vick.  i would make Geno a back up and there is no way Vick will play the whole season anyway so you have a dynamic QB in Vick who can still move as well as anyone and a possible future starter in Geno.

is he the vick of old?  no but he is the perfect combo guy for NY.  he can pass and he can run.  just get some actual receivers on this team.  I want Golden Tate and either Lee,  Cooks or Benjamin in the draft.  I'd also draft thomas from oregon if he is available in round 3. I am an Oregon fan and this kid would change third down as well as our return game.

I'm thinking more McCown. I just think if we need to go to someone besides Smith, he gets hurt less and can be more consistent. King also floated Julian Edelman to us...have to say hate him as a Pat, but damn he'd be helpful here recieving and as a returner.

Imagine "McCown to Edleman...jets score...jets win!"

These backups are getting PAID for some reason.. I wanted Cassell and he got 10 mill.... soo Vick???MMcCown??  probably too rich

Think we should just fall back and wait for Schaub or a guy like Hill.

It's the New NFL, This is Genos year, sorry to say but if he repeats last season we will be drafting a qb round 1.

@williamg1

I'm with you, Mr. G1. Peter King thinks everyone is interested in his coffee BS, but NO ONE is interested. Same for the beer critiques. But, the absolutely worst, which you may not remember, was his devoting page after page to the exploits of his daughter's high school SOFTBALL team. Excruciating. I can't read him anymore -- it's pure B__LS--T. He fancies himself the next Paul Zimmerman, but Paul's big toe knew more about football than King will ever know.

@nagel100  "

Your logic might make sense if you wanted Vick to compete for a starting job; but to just hand the job to someone who can't stay on the field for a full season ? That is not logical.

Geno Smith was the starting QB for a team that won 8 games ...be a little patient before you just throw him onto the bench.

How about Geno to Beckham for the 3 td advantage!!!!

Brendan

@Marvel  That is the going rate for a backup QB now. $4-$5 million.

Not sure that is true. Simms looked better than both Geno and Sanchez in pre-season of 2013 and none of us have seen him get any reps with the 1st team. He looks like his dad and his dad was a good QB and Matt has a stronger arm than Phil had. I think Simms is worth developing.

I personally think Geno and Sanchez have been unwatchable and combined those 2 guys have been horrendous decision makers\turnover machines! Hard to believe Simms would be worse. I'd love to see him get an opportunity with the 1st string offense in a pre-season game

Brendan

@Wilkershakes I picture King wakes up one day every year in October, jumps out of bed while shouting "THE PUMPKINS!" before racing out of his house, bath robe flailing in the wind behind him. He hops into his Mercedes, takes a meandering 45-minute drive to the beer distributor around the corner, runs inside and starts slamming his fist on the counter. "WHERE.....ARE....THE.....PUMPKIN......ALES!?" Before buying the entire stock of pumpkin-flavored beers, a good 2-3 weeks before they stop selling them.

Then he goes home, drinks them, and writes the next year's worth of Jet reports.

@Brendan

 Honestly didn't know that, I guess I was being naive.

I figured 2-3 mill.

@bradysucks  But Tom Brady and Tony Romo's dads didn't play for the NFL, so doesn't that mean they are doomed to failure like Geno apparently is? I don't see how you can use lineage and diamond-in-the-rough arguments at the same time. Simms is never a nobody because start throwing around Phil Simms every time he's mentioned. But think of all of the NFL QBs in history are aren't a son of another QB, and all of the sons of QBs that don't end up also being a QB. Statistically, Being the son of a QB is a detriment.

@bradysucks @Brendan

They are taking a good long look at Simms.  That is why he is on the roster and back-up QB.  If he shows through hard work and dedication he is better.  He will get a shot.

Obviously he has not earned that as of now.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

Being that idzik came from Seattle where Russell Wilson was given the job instead of Matt Flynn (who was earning more than 1000% more money at the time than Wilson) I'd say that Geno is not necessarily the starter......

My feeling is that Geno hasn't exactly convinced Idzik or Rex that he is the guy.....I think they are both hopeful for Geno....but I don't think Idzik runs the operation like Tannenbaum......I believe that Idzik will give opportunities to other players with potential......I think that NOT taking a good hard look at Simms who has elite arm strength is pretty foolish.....especially if his accuracy can improve with good coaching

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks  It's unreasonable in the sense that Simms isn't competing with Geno. Geno's the starter, he needs those reps more than Simms does.

bradysucks
bradysucks

@Brendan @bradysucks

Accuracy can be improved.....You can't teach arm strength....

Geno was also wildly inaccurate as was Sanchez before him....

I am not suggesting that Simms start......I just want a look at him playing with the 1st string offense against a 1st string defense in pre-season.....This really is not unreasonable considering the way Geno has played with all of the turnovers

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks  Simms definitely has a stronger arm, from what I've seen. He's wildly inaccurate, can't read a defense and struggles to move the ball consistently when he gets in there. He's a backup, no shame in that, but he went undrafted for a reason.

bradysucks
bradysucks

Simms might have a stronger arm than Geno. People have questioned his accuracy and I watched his accuracy in pre-season and he threw some very nice passes with great velocity all over the field.

Now Geno was not an Accurate QB in 2013. He was around a 29% passer in November which was unwatchable! If Geno was any good as a rookie we wouldn't be having this discussion....Geno was wildly inconsistent which invites competition

Brendan
Brendan

@bradysucks  Let me ask you something. Why does Phil Simms matter? Simms was a good (not great) QB who had a great team around him. A team so good it won a SB with the backup starting, in fact. I agree that genes matter, but as a part of the equation. People pumping up Simms act like that's most of the equation, imo.

Everyone's a nobody until they prove otherwise. Romo was a highly sought-after UDFA, so I disagree that he really counts on this. Teams knew he was good, his question was competition. Brady was a legitimate shock, but I don't think you should bank on that when bringing in young players.

Simms isn't very good, he could improve and become a solid backup, he could continue being not very good, I honestly have no idea. But I think the team would be presenting him as starter-quality if he was, because then they could get picks out of him.

bradysucks
bradysucks

Geno had so many turnovers in 2013 that he doesn't deserve to go into camp as the starter. I agree.

Competition is good

williamg1
williamg1

@bradysucks  I just want competition. If Geno can't beat out Vick (or any other FA) than we know he isn't the guy.

bradysucks
bradysucks

Brett Ratliff is a legitimate point BUT Brett was not the son of Phil Simms.

Obviously genes do matter as does DNA. Andrew Luck's dad was an NFL QB. I need not mention Peyton & Eli Manning....

While we are on the subject lets not forget that Sanchez and Geno were both turnover machines so I do not see any harm that can come from giving other QB's opportunities in the pre-season to show their stuff with the 1st team offense

Guys like Tom Brady and Tony Romo were considered nobodies until they got a chance (thanks to Drew Bledsoe) - it is important to give guys opportunities to sink or swim & I'm not saying Simms will be the next Brady..

Brendan

@bradysucks  Oh god.

Give Geno a puppy and a clue ..

Geno the turnover machine needs a clue (and I was a Geno fan)

If Geno keeps turning over the football then the Jets can toss him in the trash with Sanchez....

A puppy & a clue for Geno :)

Vick served his time and made his money but I will still have a hard time rooting for him as the Jets QB - torturing dogs = not cool with me

Brendan
Brendan

@Marvel In theory, I agree with you. But Jets fans were clamoring for Matt Simms last year, they will 100% be doing the same for Schaub at the first sign of trouble. That's why I ignore the fan aspect entirely, just bring in a guy who will give you the most faith if he's forced into major action.

Marvel
Marvel

@Brendan

 So aim for Schaub, safest, most cost efficient choice in all likelihood. won't get the starter cries early , won't get the useless backup tag, won't break the bank, could perform well.

Brendan
Brendan

@Marvel I think the team is giving Geno this year, but if he falls flat on his face (unlikely, IMO), the team probably isn't going to sink the entire season.

Marvel
Marvel

@Brendan

 Guess it depends on how the team plans on handling Geno, is he getting the year?  or does a 0-2 start get him the hook?

that's the difference between signing vick /mcCown or a guy like Hill.

Brendan

@Marvel Good ones? Nah. Hell, I bet even Mark will get a couple million on a 1-year deal.
