Link: Shutdown Countdown ranks the Jets 23rd

Here’s a Jets season preview article by Frank Schwab of Yahoo’s Shutdown Corner blog. They’re counting down the teams from worst to first and the Jets come in at a disappointing 23rd position.

However, it’s not all bad. This is a balanced and quite optimistic preview in spite of the low ranking, with Schwab acknowledging that the offense will be better, he likes the Decker move and he can see Quinton Coples having a break-out season statistically.

Ultimately, his assessment is that the season hinges on the quarterback position, which is a reasonable position. Even there, he admits he likes Smith and that the Jets will be in the mix for a playoff spot if he makes a leap in his second season.

I wish the jets could have drafted in the order determined by the way they were ranked by the media. Last year the jets would have drafted 10th instead of 18th if Shwab was correct. And he is ranking them this low for 2014. Despite improving running back,receiver, QB, and tight end on the offense, and despite improving the secondary on defense along with defensive depth across the board...and the special teams should also be improved significantly. And stop with the points differential nonsense. The jets last year were a vey good defensive team with a very poor offense featuring a rookie QB. You would never expect this type of team to win by big margins. When the offense played good they won - usually tight games, when the offense was mediocre it was a toss up, but when the offense was bad, they had the potential to get crushed as their rookie QB who had no reliable back up, would implode.

Can you imagine if Geno takes the leap, Milliner continues from where he left off, Amaro catches on fast, Pryor terrorizes receivers going over the middle, Patterson stays healthy and is a solid #2, the dline plays light out, Decker and Kerley  keep the chains moving, the oline plays consistent, CJ gives defenses a fit, and Ivory grinds them down? We then go deep into the post season baby! Now, the Farm is out!

If the Farm was forced to rate this team even at this point where it is murky, it would be around #18.

The way the Farm sees it, is we have so many unknowns, that a rating at this point is meaningless. We have young unproven talent but with potential. One thing is certain and that is, that it will be an entertaining and interesting season.

If Geno takes a leap and Milliner plays like what the Jets expect, our chances of a post season increase big time. Then there are the coaches who must tie all the new pieces together and develop a rhythm. We also must avoid the injury bug with some key veteran players.

The talent is definitely there and aside from the oline, WR and LBer position, the depth is also there. We are real strong on the Dline, RB position and also have depth in the secondary. What it all boils down to is if Geno rises to the next level, a second wr steps up, Milliner plays like his high draft pick potential and Patterson plays solid on the other side.

Another factor is that we need some of the rookies, especially Amaro, Pryor and McDougle to be the real deal out of the gates. Yes, there are a lot of questions and geling to do, but the raw product is there and it will be up to the coaching to put the best players on the field and tie it all together. One thing is certain, and that is that we will be competitive but to what extent remains to be seen. Can’t wait!

Before camp

Before pre-season games

 Before final roster and proposed starting line ups.

Yeah.........good conclusion.

teams have won SB's without top corners, most SB wins have come from good overall defense and very good QB play

It's a good thing that these rankings are meaningless.  One hater's opinion.

we are going to have a rough stretch of opponents with real good qbs  this season and if geno and milliner don't improve from last year it could get ugly...cant wait for the season to get going we have so much young talent on this team I would love to see where these guys are at

23rd is pretty fair. We're relying on improved play from a young QB and young DBs in a pass heavy league that are by no means guaranteed. A little closer to 16, the middle, would've been nice. 23 is a big step up from 32 though.

What you say is interesting but not really correct. There are contingencies for all your required scenarios that would provide improved (or at the very least equal) performance from last year. I think what people are not quite getting is that the jets are focusing on DEPTH. More options at each position. Many will not rise ...but some will and the team will improve. If a player fails there are several guys with real potential waiting to step in at nearly every position.

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer   Doc, I agree it still can be effective but the league has evolved into a passing offense. I think if you have a a top run game and an elite defense you can go for a ride and even win the big one but that is getting more scarce. I think we will see the trend continue barring an anomaly here and there that the teams that make it to the big dance, will have a top passing offense. All the rules now days favor this aspect and it will continue.

@harvlis He really doesn't come across like a "hater" if you read the article.

Might be one of those situations where the ranking is determined by someone other than this writer of the article, or even by a group of writers.

@rstysanchz And the teams playing our opponents the week after we face them will be facing an easy stretch of opponents with their backup QB forced to start due to injury.

@juunit

It is also a bit of a step down from where we finished last season...

@Bent @harvlis

He didn;t rank the Jets in the top ten, he MUST be a HATER!!!

Are u aware that the "one man" in the Browns "one man offense" has been suspended for the season?

@Hanknaples Ah, the #Hankzone.  Where a 2-6 team fumbling in a tied game on the 46 yard line constitutes a guaranteed playoff spot, while a team actually going 8-8 doesn't count because they were "gifted 4-5 games".

Why even bother to keep score?  We should just play the games and have you judge who should have been the winner.

@Hanknaples No, I'm glad he went to Cleveland, screw the Heat and their "fans".
