Michael Vick open to signing in New York, but more open to signing as a starter

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Back in 2012 when the ship was sinking on the 2012 season, there was a report that while Rex Ryan looked for answers on how to fix his offense, Ryan loved Michael Vick as a player and would consider bringing him in to New York had he become a free agent.  About a month after that Ryan story about Vick ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote a piece stating Vick wasn’t thrilled with the idea of reuniting with Marty Mornhinweg, most likely because Vick and Mornhinweg were at odds about his ability to help the team as a starter.

Now more than a year later, it is plain that Nick Foles has come a long way in a season and has cemented his status as the future starter for the Chip Kelly led Eagles.  But for Vick, the question remains what will happen with now-backup as he prepares to hit the open market?

According to Vick he wants to find a place where he can start, above all. Vick told a Philadelphia radio station this week that”I want to start” and while he would consider a contract from the Eagles he will test the free agent waters first to see what he can find first.

When asked about returning to Philly, Vick said he wants to explore all his options. “I want to see what’s out there for me. It’s only right,” Vick told the Philadelphia Inquirer this week in New York. “This is the first time and probably the only time I’ll ever have to do it in my career. So I just want to take advantage of it. I’m excited about it. It’s new and it’s kind of refreshing.”

Over on NFL Network this week, Vick was asked if the Jets would be a good fit.  Vick’s reply was wisely coy.  “Who knows? What I am is really excited about the opportunity to play again in 2014 and that’s what’s important.”

Vick is going to want to try and go to a city where he can start first and foremost.  If he was going to come to the Jets, one would think that they would have to give him a pretty good verbal indication that yes, he would become their starter in 2014 before he signed a deal.

That said, how many other teams might be willing to offer Vick a de facto starting position before even signing on the dotted line?  Wisely, Jets GM John Idzik has not committed to Geno Smith as the starter for 2014, but it seems likely that the Jets will move Mark Sanchez this offseason to clear cap space and will provide Geno Smith the chance to start in 2014 with a better supporting cast.  Sure, the Jets might be interested in Vick, but it seems like a long shot if Vick will want to start as a condition of joining a team.

While Idzik was panned for not committing to his starter after the 2013 season ended, his unwillingness to make bold declarations in January about his starting quarterback has left this option open without undue media hysteria.  And for a team looking for every way to get better and a lot of money to spend, that is a very good thing and allows them every option by not painting themselves unecessarily into a corner.

UPDATE: Let’s not forget the poll results when we asked what your reaction would be to getting Vick less than 14 months ago…

I have no problem with Vick coming in as a backup not a starter.  I think It will only help Geno more having a season veteran breathing down his back. What if the jets are 8-4 and Geno goes down? at least with Vick he knows the offense already along with the OC..  I really don't care about his past. Because if someone's past is  going to interrupt their success then why are we spending on rehabilitation which prison is part off.. . If that's the case just kill everybody who did wrong,.... than we wont have a human race left.... LOL I want to win a SB  Ill take whoever can help.  What killed Sanchez was  he never had any real competition. Vick will have Geno working....  43 years and waiting I'm in the heart attack years....Please can I see the Jets win.

Funny, because as I watched Geno play QB for the Jets this season the NFL QB he reminded me the most of was Michael Vick.

I shouldn't have read this before dinner.  Completely lost my appetite just thinking about Vick.

No to Vick! If the Jets ever want to get respect in the Giants backyard they have to stop considering guys with an awful history.

If they ever signed Vick that would be the end of buying anything Jets and of course being a Jets fan. If they want to stop multiple generations of bleeding green, sign Vick and set us all free. Hope Woody is listening. This is not Philadelphia. We don;t like dog killers in this area.

@Tyrone Garcia

If the Jets are going to start next season with Geno,  they need a veteran not named David Garrard.   I don't see Josh McCown leaving Chicago unless he has a chance to be a starter for another team.

I assume Michael Vick will try for a job as a starter somewhere first.  He would be a good choice if he agreed to be the backup for the Jets.  Geno needs a veteran who can be supportive on the sidelines,  meetings and watching film.

Just having another competent QB on the team should serve as insurance for either injury or bad play.

"Geno needs a veteran who can be supportive on the sidelines,  meetings and watching film"

Says who? We need to coddle Geno like another QB we had? Geno has David Lee and Marty Mornhinweg, if that isn't good enough for him then we should move on. None of this wasting roster spots for folks who hold hands and can't play.

@jake100 @frustjetfnI would donate all the money I spend every year on Jets memorabilia to the organizations you cited: ASPCA and PETA to support their protests.

@a57se @bklyndude   If you think Geno is in there class then I might understand not placing a priority on having a competent veteran backup.   But what you classify as coddling,  I would say it's smart to have somebody with playing experience other than coaches around him during the week to talk with.

The most important reason to have a veteran QB behind Geno is the fact that he might not turn into one of the above QB's that you mentioned.  Somebody like Vick or whoever could come in and the level of play would remain high. Throwing in Simms or some other rookie would probably mean the season has gone to hell.

@bklyndude

Tell me who the veteran is for RG3, Luck, Wilson, Cam, or Matt Ryan??

Who did they have to coddle them?

Garrard was a wasted roster spot......

@a57se @bklyndude

You are not big on developing rookie QB's.

I suppose David Garrard who is the current backup is a better option for the backup spot, or some other rookie like David Fales.
