NFL: New York Jets at Miami Dolphins

Mornhinweg: ‘Nothing impedes the young quarterback’s progression’

Geno Smith will get the first reps with the team at minicamps, Marty Mornhinweg said.

“Geno will get a few more reps, but not many,” he said. “I would expect Geno to progress at a high rate with Mike’s help.”

The offensive coordinator had nothing but praise for Michael Vick, but said that the competition will be structured so that “nothing impedes the young quarterback’s progression.”

Vick is an “outstanding, dynamic” type of player, Mornhinweg said, and he expects his transition to the Jets’ system to be “seamless.”

“I think this thing is going to work beautifully,” the OC said.

When MM is in a groove, as was the case a few times last season, he is like a philharmonic conductor.  He seems to give you the feeling of being in control.  The feeling just returned.

So does anybody know how to get my livefyre avatar to show when I post on the Jets blog?

Both need minimum 3 additional weapons IMO..

WR of your choice, TE of your choice, DAT or Archer..

And the LG can't blow chunks..

I guess Martys gonna shut down the thought of controversy. at the QB position.

LOVE Marty... guy is a pro and has been doing this for a very long time.

Geno is better right now than Mark was at any point in his career. Let him play. He's got the arm, the legs, and the work ethic/attitude to excel in this league. He doesn't get caught in the bs. Just wants to be a better football player.

whoever crushes is it preseason is gonna start...

We all know this..

If it's a tie, Geno starts with slight wiggle room.. this we all know.

I didn't hear the call, but it sounds like Geno is the starter.  Is this not an open competition anymore?  Was it ever labeled that?

OT. Hopefully Roger Goodell, in the last hour, A) watched Adam Silver's press conference, B) grew a pair, and C) advised that Garden Gnome Snyder, to start brainstorming some new team names.....

@bradysucks Same problem over here. I have one, but it doesn't transfer over when I post

@Marvel  I don't think he's intriguing.  Highly inconsistent player who doesn't have what it takes for the NFL.

@Marvel I love it haha

@Marvel  He does, so some mid-round QB with flappy gums just lost himself a chance at the Jets.

Agreed.  On O we need a quality WR and a top TE, plus the wild card that is DAT or Archer, etc.

Would also add that on D we need a CB and an edge rusher.

And I'd still like to get a road grader for the OL...

No need to pencil-in the names.   There's multiple options for each of them, and we all know who the difference-makers are.

Go get 'em, Johnny.

gbrownn

ODB,ASJ, DAT in the 3rd. I think we are going to have to reach a little for DAT or Archer. There's some offensive coordinator day dreaming up a package for those guys.

@Marvel

I still think we should draft a box of o-line men with the first pic.

Dats Right you get six in a box. I think dats da way to go.

In the 2nd round we get a jar of receivers. they come 3 in a jar.

Dat da way to do it.....Ya ya dats right.

I've been a fan of his since watching the Eagles all those years. The man can design offense witht the best of them. He just gets a little too pass happy for me at times. That was his downfall amongst Eagle fans.

@Marvel  I'll make a friendly bet with you that doesn't happen.  I'll bet you Geno is starter unless he plays just god awful.

@t__k  No, that wasn't what was said.

He will get the first reps in minicamp and will get more reps than Vick at the outset, but they were still talking about a competition between the two of them.

@Brendan @Marvel  Kinda strange that this comes out with the news at around the same time Steiny posts a list of all of the people the Jets had visit, including Savage.

one will be there in the 4th.. if not there are similar players that can be had after the 3rd.

Hazard2012

@gbrownn

But a lot of them have GM's with less than 12 picks.   DAT's a luxury, for a team with lots of picks and who already has a stacked backfield. He's probably going to have to be one of our 4th round picks...but we can afford it.   Same applies for Archer.

Jesse DeBear

@gbrownn But paired with run-loving Rex... they could end up building something dangerous over the next 2 seasons.

@Marvel @t__k  before your A falls off from laughing, check my first comment.  I ididn't hear the call, but yea, that's what it sounds like.  Geno is the starter.  Clearly I'm attempting to read between the lines.

Hazard2012

@Bent @t__k

I take this to mean that "nothing impedes the young QB's progression" except the young QB.    It's Geno's job to lose...Vick is there if he falters.

No new news in that.

t__k
t__k

@bklyndude @t__k  I mean you hear competition at every position, then you hear that Geno is the starter basically...which is it?  I'd think Vick is the better QB right now.

He might not change it, that doesn't mean it doesn't get changed at some point. To me it's just a matter of time.

@Brendan @MPTG_Frank  It's worse in a sense.  One is a public statement.  The other was private.

MPTG_Frank
MPTG_Frank

His refusal to accept the fact that the name is indeed offensive, makes it similar if not exactly the same. I'm not calling for a ban or suspension, but I am calling for a name change. In his own city, they changed the basketball team name proactively.

Bent

@a57se @Bent  Didn't he have 22 visits and then had to start cancelling them or something?

Bent

@__fense @Brendan @Marvel  FWIW the teams do have to officially disclose their 30 visits and that is shared with the other 31 teams so does generally make it into the public domain eventually anyway.

gbrownn
gbrownn

@Marvel @Hazard2012 While I agree they are luxuries, I don't think thats going to stop those guys from being overdrafted. DAT scored 36 in 2 years. I have to think someone (even gms) have him circled on their draft board right now. Tavon Austin went in the top 10 out of nowhere it seemed. I see DAT having the same type of rise. To clarify, I don't see him going to the top ten. But I think the 4th is realllly stretching, if he's there in the 4th I'm taking him with that 1st pick no questions asked. I just don't know if that'll happen.

gbrownn
gbrownn

Hopefullly we pick up on that note we left on! It ultimately falls all on Geno(gonna be saying that alot this offeseason)

__fense
__fense

@gbrownn  But then they corrected that mistake and found a compromise, and that was when the offense was at it's absolute best.

gbrownn
gbrownn

@ Jesse DeBear I think it can go either way. I thought the offense was at it's absolute worse (thats saying alot) when Rex had Marty scale back the offense for whatever reason after the Saints game.

Bent

@a57se @Bent  Hey, if he's not the best man for the job, then starting Vick but not giving up on Geno is the best way forward.  Hopefully that's the plan.

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se @Bent @Hazard2012  I would interpret it to mean "Don't worry, if Vick does happen to become the starter, we're not going to forget about Geno and we're still going to try and develop him as best we can".

Bent
Bent moderator

@Hazard2012 @Bent @t__k  I think the headline might be a bit misleading.  To add context to that quote, what was actually said was:

"We'll structure the competition in such a way that ... nothing impedes the young QB's progression".

@boomer @MPTG_Frank  kidding me, right?

Nothing about the Redskins organization was meant as a term of respect. This is a team that refused to allow blacks on the team for nearly a decade after other teams signed blacks. They openly catered to racism, and when the owner died, he made it clear he didn't want his money going to anything related to racial integration.

boomer
boomer

@MPTG_Frank  Its offensive now.  It wasn't when the team was named.  Go take a look at the history of the Redskins.  There was an poll done in 2004 when this started becoming a media issue by the Annenburg Institute that asked native Americans across the country what they thought of the name.  9 in 10 had no problem with it at all.

Be as outraged as you want. This was meant as a term of respect and until the pc police got into this and started stirring the pot nobody gave a damn.

MPTG_Frank
MPTG_Frank

Thanks for the history lesson. Your premise is still silly. Just put it to the eye/ear test. Brave is not offensive. It is a term for a warrior, certainly not a savage. Redskin is incredibly offensive, akin to referring to any race, solely by the their skin color.

Bent
Bent moderator

@frankwhite @Bent @MPTG_Frank  Don't you think they'll make an absolute KILLING from merchandising?  Maybe he's just waiting until they're good again before he makes that move.

Bent

@boomer  When they make the Sterling-Silver movie, people are going to watch it and not realize it's based on a true story.  After all, Sterling AND Silver?  That sounds like a cliched pair of character names.

frankwhite
frankwhite

@Bent @MPTG_FrankDan Snyder paid 750 million dollars for the Washington Redskins less than 10 years ago (they are valued much higher now) and they gross somewhere around 350 million dollars a year.  Included in all that value is the brand that is the Redskins.  To think that a businessman is going to voluntarily relinquish something of value is laughable.

boomer
boomer

@Bent @MPTG_Frank  Only because people have become so politically correct over the last few years.

The Redskins actually started in Boston (where most good things come from) and started as the Boston Braves, the same name as the local baseball team (you might now know them as the Atlanta Braves).

When they moved to Fenway the name was changed to honor their coach who was a Sioux indian.  It was meant as a term of honor and not a slur.

I expect that soon some group will try to get the Celtics to change their name as it insults the Irish, or leprechauns or global warming.

Cordell C
Cordell C

I agree they should change the name but it would take threats from the fans it has to threaten the teams bottom line just like the whole sterling thing best believe if the nba wasn't looking at a loss of revenue they wouldn't have punished him so severely

Bent
Bent moderator

@MPTG_Frank  One day people will look back on what the team was called with disbelief.  I don't know if that's 2017, 2117 or 3017 though.

Bent
Bent moderator

@a57se @MPTG_Frank  That wasn't changed because it was offensive, it was changed because they didn't think it was a good thing to be associated with when many of their fans are kids.
