News: Bradway on hand Monday at Ole Miss Pro Day

Pro Day season began and Ole Miss was among the first group of schools to participate.

According to our own Jake Steinberg, Jets Senior Director of College Scouting Terry Bradway was spotted in Oxford Mississippi.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

If Bradway was in Mississippi he was there to see one man, WR Donte Montcrief. Montcrief is projected to go anywhere in the second through third rounds and was ranked No. 15 by Walter Football, 19 by Optimum Scouting and 11 by CBS Sports.

Moncrief is a big receiver at 6’2″ and 221 pounds. Scouts say that for his size he has good speed and already has excellent route-running skills. Montcrief rates lower than top receivers this year because he doesn’t have the same explosion that a player like Sammy Watkins has. Even so, he is good out of his breaks and has the size and suddenness to create space, especially off double moves. In addition, Montcrief is known as a good blocker for other receivers and in the running game. A trait that head coach Rex Ryan always loves in receivers.

The top five or six receivers in the draft will be easy evaluations for the Jets, but it is the players like Montcrief whch the Jets will want to take a closer look at since this is a deep class of receivers. Even with a full field, there are no guarantees that the Jets are going to get their man in the first round. Montcrief seems the type of player who might not have all the upside physical skills of other players but who regardless might adjust quickly in the translation to the NFL.

We expect that Bradway will spend a lot of time on the road over the next month, but having the Senior Director of College Scouting get on a plane, fly to Mississippi and watch the Pro Day for a second day prospect has to tell us a little something about the type of receiver they are keeping a close eye on in this year’s draft class.

My beef with Bradway is the mid to late rounds. He does well in the early rounds, but once the premiere prospects are exhausted he's lost. I'm not sure if he even knows what a small school sleeper is. Every year I see teams taking the coveted small school studs we spend months researching and talking about in the later rounds, while Bradway and this staff are taking scrubs that nobody wants from the big schools, like Aboushi or William Campbell.

Am I the only one who doesn't want Brandin Cooks at 18? If we're at a point where five receivers are already gone (Watkins, Evans, Beckham, Lee, Ebron counting as WR), I'd assume that either one of the 2 corners or outside linebackers would be there, and I'd rather take one of them.

If Jimmy Garoppolo is there at 80, do the Jets Bite?

I wouldn't be surprised based on their apparent interest.

They have already visited twice with him (E-W game and the Combine).

i've had a change if heart. with the plethora of picks this year and the supposed quality of this draft, if the jets really believe in their scouting dept's acumen to identify quality players in rounds 2-7, i wouldnt mind then trading the 2 1's for Mr Graham

Here's a joke for you and I mean no disrespect for those of you who love brandin Cooks as a prospect but Walter Footballs new Mock which they are running right now has the Jets picking Cooks at 18 because........Peter King says he would be perfect for the jets!

This is the kind of stuff that makes Walter Football appear to be a bad joke.

Troy Niklas is the 2nd round pick.

OK, 18 rolls around and the following are on the board:

Anthony Barr, Johnny Manziel, Eric Ebron and Mike Evans.

This is a HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION.

Who would you pick if you had to.....

a57se
a57se

@dobermite

Bradway is not the GM, he doesn't make those decisions so why do you blame him?

5 WRs will not be gone by 18.

@J. Smooth

I think that is fair...another possibility is Zach Martin or one of the other top linemen.

@a57se  My issue with Garoppolo is that because he came from lower-tier competition he isn't as NFL ready as other guys. We already have a raw QB prospect in Geno, I'd prefer to get a more ready prospect even if he has a lower ceiling. Prime examples being Aaron Murray, AJ McCarron, etc.

@a57se

At 80?  That would be worth considering.  He would probably fit well in a West Coast offense because he is definitely more of a timing and rhythm passer.

I think someone is going to reach on him though because they are buying the hype.  Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of his but he doesn't have the best am strength to consistently drive the ball outside the hashes or down field.

@a57se  I'm just posting so you know I'm here. Do I have to actually answer this?

Because he was the GM who oversaw many drafts and he's been the head of our college scouting department since he stepped down as GM, so he still plays a big role in who we draft, and I think he does a poor job at recognizing the small school studs, year after year we all know who those guys are, and year after year we waste mid to late round picks on big school UDFA's like Will Campbell when other teams are taking the sleepers we all spent months talking about. I just don't see him touting the most prominent sleepers and small school guys, ever. From my experience, since Bradway has been here, you can pretty much turn your TV off after the 4th RD. He might get lucky once in awhile, but he's usually taking consensus UFDA's from the 5th RD on.

a57se

@Pat d

Actually he had four WR's and a TE...which is very possible.

@jdb4 @a57se

I like to play with the Fanspeak Online Mock Draft simulator and Tuesday is when they update their player rankings so I just ran a mock and got the following:

1. Beckham jr.

2. ASJ

3. Allen Robinson

3. Garoppolo

4. Sankey

5. Gayle OLB

6. Davis CB

7. Saunders OW

Not a bad offensive haul.........I am looking forward to the end of the month when the Comp picks are handed out and we know what we have. Also by then, we'll have a good idea of where the teams' needs are after the first couple weeks of free agency!

Brendan
Brendan

@Marcus Armstrong @idothis2  I like the idea of trading back, picking up a pick, then sending those two picks, plus maybe one of the Jets' own, for Graham. What are the odds the Saints trade him for less than the two firsts compensation that comes with his tag?

Marcus Armstrong
Marcus Armstrong

@a57se  And if Mack is available, you trade 2/3/3 to get pick #19, and then take Mack and Evans.

a57se

@Brendan @a57se

Brendan, you can do whatever your little heart desires....:)

I would have thought you would jump on Evans.

dobermite

Anyway, its just frustrating because every year we spend months talking about the guys who could be mid to late round steals, then we never take any of them, we watch other teams take them while we take the Oday Aboushi's of the world.

I lumped in Ebron in just as J Smooth did. I doubt if all are gone.

@harold

Stop trading away our premium picks....YES, In this draft, a 4th rounder is a premium pick!

harold
harold

After that 4.6 40 he may drop him to at least late 2nd where if we like him we can trade up for a 4th rounder, depending on how late maybe even a 5th.

@a57se @jdb4  Love me some Allen Robinson. Let him drop to the third round for me...

Yeah, run another and he'll be in the late twenties like in mine!

jdb4

@a57se @jdb4

Neat tool, but I notice some guys go astronomically higher than they should.  Jordan Matthews went 8 to Minnesota in mine.

J. Smooth
J. Smooth

@Bent @J. Smooth @Brendan  I don't know about that. In this draft, you can argue that having 20 and 25 could potentially yield more value than just plain 5.

Bent
Bent moderator

@J. Smooth @Brendan  I was just talking from the Saints perspective.  If someone with a top 10 pick offered it to them for Graham, they'd be crazy to insist on two firsts and then end up with two late first rounders.

Of course, I'm still of the opinion that they put that in place to buy them time and perhaps allow someone else to do the legwork on a deal they ultimately intend to match.  Trading him should only be a last resort for them.

Brendan
Brendan

@J. Smooth Those picks could also turn into busts, though. So at that point you're comparing one bust vs. two busts.

J. Smooth
J. Smooth

@Brendan @J. Smooth  That kinda proves my point. The NFL is so wishy-washy year-to-year that you can't count on the fact that our 2016 1st rounder won't be top-5. In my opinion, there are maybe ten players in the entire league who are worth a pair of twos, and most of them are either Quarterbacks, Linemen, or Linebackers.

Bent
Bent moderator

@J. Smooth @Brendan @Marcus Armstrong @idothis2

Two late firsts and one mid first are pretty much the same value if one of the late firsts is a future pick.

Just like how a top pick is worth more than two low first rounders.

Brendan
Brendan

@J. Smooth They would've looked great if RGIII didn't regress and get hurt because his coach is a dumbo.

Bent
Bent moderator

@Brendan @Marcus Armstrong @idothis2  If a team did this, then they might be better served trading him for less than two firsts.

After all, if they know they're getting 32 and a late 2015 first, then they'd be better off trading him for a mid round first per the value chart.

Marcus Armstrong
Marcus Armstrong

@a57se @Marcus Armstrong  Given the depth in this class, and the fact that the points there are awfully close, I think the Dolphins would be thrilled to have three more picks in the first three rounds.

Brendan

@a57se Yes. Sheldon = Boss Hogg = The Boss = The BAWS

a57se

@gusto

I guess BAWS is Sheldon......that would be a pretty impressive group up front for years to come if we could PAY them all.....our D front 7 would be the most expensive in football in a few years!

gusto

Mack, BAWS, Wilkshake, Snacks, and Q for an entire decade is just more enticing than Geno and Evans for a decade to me. Especially if Milliner and Allen develop into top flight players the way I expect them to.

@harold

P.S.  If this happens the Jets will run to the podium!

We know Rex will run up there,  Idzik would have a nice debate with himself.  Evans fills the Jets bigger need,  and after that combine he is a top ten talent.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  That's fair.

And to reiterate, Mack is my irrational man crush for 2014, my favorite defensive player and I would attempt backflips through Times Square if they take him. I say "attempt" because I'd try once, fall on my neck and go home crying. But the excitement would burn for a long time if the Jets somehow got Mack.

harold
harold

I don't see it but it is possible.  Evans vs many others Evans probably wins out.   But vs Mack don't see it.

gusto
gusto

Personally, I believe Mack is the best defensive player in this draft when you combine measurables with talent and motor. The guy is just a physical freak and if you put that with our defensive line, you can trot out Geno Smith and the coaching staff on offense. Mike Evans is a great prospect, but Mack is a Von Miller level talent. You don't pass up on that for the next Vincent Jackson.

And in terms of 1st round selections, I firmly believe that defense in the first round is usually the way to go since there are more positions of impact on that side of the ball. Like interior DL can be the #1 pick overall but interior OL shouldn't be considered in the first unless you're a playoff team. In that same breath, I value edge rusher over receiver because you can get by without Calvin Johnson, but a good pass rush won the Giants two Super Bowls (Eli mattered, too, but he doesn't win if he has to have a shoot out with Rodgers, the 49ers, Tom Brady, etc)

a57se
a57se

@Brendan @harold

I think it would be a very difficult choice even with Barr instead of Mack. And you know how unsure I am of Evans.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  Okay, I'm not here to argue about our biased rankings, but I think you're kidding yourself if you think the Jets don't even entertain taking Evans there.

harold
harold

I just think Mack is a bigger Von Miller without the weed.

Don't think the Jets would even hesitate.

I see Evans a s a top 16 player.

I see Mack as a top 5 player.

Brendan
Brendan

@harold  You seriously don't think they look at Evans compared to Mack? I find it hard to believe the Jets will ever be like that under Idzik.

johnnyl65
johnnyl65

@a57se @johnnyl65 @Brendan  Mack,Evans,Ebron,Manziel.

I don't respect the TE position as a first round pick and Johnny football is a pick you make when you can afford the risk.

harold

@Brendan

I don't think Goddell would even get the words Jets are on the clock before we would have Mack's card turned in

harold
harold

@a57se

Mack is the best player/Evans/Ebron/Manziel.

P.S.  If this happens the Jets will run to the podium!

Brendan
Brendan

@gusto

I don't see why that'd be madness. Mack isn't a sure-fire prospect, he has question marks like everyone else.

I think the team would look long and hard at taking Evans over Mack, since they have been hurting for a vertical threat and I get the impression the new regime isn't fond of Hill.

Don't get me wrong, I would take Mack and then go tackle random strangers in Midtown to celebrate. I think my status as the unapologetic defense-homer is well known, but if not....I'm the unapologetic defense-homer who would draft defense in the 1st round every year forever and be happy with that.

@a57se @johnnyl65 @Brendan  If we get a WR in FA then Mack's your guy if not you have to go Evans.

a57se

@johnnyl65 @a57se@Brendan

Not at all...the idea is to sub Mack for Barr in the original scenario then see if brendan still takes Evans  or if mack supplants Evans as his pick.....

Then his order is either Mack, Evans, Barrr, Ebron and Manziel

or Evans, Mack, Barr, Ebron and Manziel.

Sub Mack for Barr and would your ranking change?

@a57se  That's what I was implying, that my position is so widely known and discussed that I don't even have to actually answer.

But, for the sake of discussion, my ranking of those players:

Evans/Barr/Ebron/Johnny FOOTBAW!!
