News: Jets release cornerback Antonio Cromartie

NFL: New Orleans Saints at New York JetsAntonio Cromartie has been a big part of the Jets defense for the past four seasons, but with a large unwieldy $5 million bonus (that to our knowledge couldn’t be restructured) looming on the third day of the league year  this Thursday, it is no secret that the Jets and Antonio Cromartie were heading towards a split.  The question since December has been whether that split would be permanent or temporary.

Since the season ended, Cromartie has been frank that he expected the Jets to release him, but he has also expressed his desire to stay with the Jets and finish his career with the team.  “This is where I want to be, that’s where I want to retire,” Cromartie told NBC Sports back in January.

Sunday afternoon the Jets released Cromartie, and the all-star took to Twitter to say his thanks to the organization and the fans in what seemed like a final goodbye to New York.

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

Cutting Cromartie represents an $9.5 million cap savings for the Jets, which is made more interesting by the interest the team expressed Saturday in pending free agent CB Alterraun Verner.  Cromartie was going to be cut one way or another between now and Thursday, but the timeline based on the team’s actions yesterday around the Titans cornerback make any interest in Verner seem a lot more compelling.

Cromartie came a long way in his four years in New York.  When he arrived, there were many questions surrounding his character and play on the field.  His four years in New York have put much of that to rest.  In that time, he has demonstrated the progress that he has made not only as a player but as a man.

It is our wish that Cromartie could return, but the finality in the tone of those tweets seems to indicate that both sides are moving on.  We thank Antonio Cromartie for his play on the field and his mentoring of younger Jets players over the past few years.

We wish Cro and his family the best in all their future endeavors.

Cro will always have a special place in my heart.

The day he called Brady an a hole is the day he became a real Jet.

Good luck to you Cro.

I know it's very unlikely but what would the cap situation look like if the jets were to sign Verner, Byrd, Tate and Ginn.. I think the jets should take an aggressive approach in FA so they can draft BPA.

If they strike our on a big fa corner I hope they have an arrangement with Cro to stay on touch. When a very good player is here loves to be here and is proud to get a jet we should do our best to keep him. J- co. Leon Washington cone to mind

Verner or Talib.. We need physical corners

It doesn't make sense to overpay CB's in today's NFL. The PI calls, the inability to play physical, your money is better spent elsewhere.

why are we all for bringing in another corner who likes to play off coverage instead of a guy like talib who plays the press man that rex LOVES??????????

Hey Brendan/Bent - hope this isn't stupid question but any chance they sign a verner AND bring Cro back at a cap friendly deal?

Cro looked so bad at times last year with his inability to change directions that i wondered why the Jets didnt protect him more in their coverages if he insisted on playing. i guess one reason they couldnt protect him more was due to Milliner being worse for much of the season. time will tell if it cost him $ going forward. he couldve shut it down early in the season and rested on his 2012 tape. hard not to appreciate what he gave in 2013

I enjoyed watching Cro grow as both a player and a person during his time as a Jet.  It's a shame that it had to end on such a down note in his play.

So thinking about the timing, Of the tree guys we're all assuming will be cut, the earlier it happens, the better it is for the player, isn't it? Cro now has time to talk with other teams, which he couldn't do while he was under contract and which Holmes and Sanchez still aren't allowed to do. Maybe he went first as a courtesy to him?

@jimjets  All those guys are asking for is a little respect.

@JCuratola3 Landry looks very solid if can get him in 2nd or 3rd depending on how he grades out.  I'll miss Cro.  He played hard for the Jets.

@JCuratola3

Not a bad plan....I like a different CB and QB in the draft but the concept is solid!

Brendan

@JCuratola3  Verner isn't physical, though. He's more an off-man cover corner who uses great anticipation skills, film study and athleticism to just stick in a wr's hip pocket. He doesn't beat up receivers like Talib does.

Brendan
Brendan

@Jimmy P.  Those are reasons you should pay top dollar to an elite CB. It's hard to find them, so you pay a premium to lock one up.

Brendan
Brendan

@phily kay  Rex just wants good corners, guys he can trust one-on-one with a WR. Verner can do that. As long as Rex can trust his CB to do that, it's fine.

@jimjets  Bringing in Verner will make a lot of people happy. And keeping Cro may prevent Kirk Michael from having a breakdown.

Brendan
Brendan

@jimjets  Probably not, and they wouldn't need to. They have Milliner who is going to start at one CB and Wilson who is a very good slot corner. They just need one more starter, not two.

@jimjets

Can't see that happening.

@__fense  No sense pissing him off. We may need to sign him back.

Lol yea but the jets do have the cap space. I figure those four guys would combine for about 32 million of the available cap space @jake100

Jimmy P.
Jimmy P.

Wrong. Because elite CB's can't play their game anymore. There is no need for a 10+ million dollar CB anymore. Just like there isn't a need to draft RB's in the top of the draft anymore.

Times change

Unless he's the best cb in the game, then you ship him to Tampa and keep the cb who sucks taint. But hey we got boss hog at the expense of our secondary so all is right!!

They won't be together long when their contracts come up. Sherman is still on his first deal.

Next.

@Bent @jimjets  But it is physically possible with the huge amount of cap space we have.

@brenden they can always sign Howard and draft a ol.. I know the scenario above is very unlikely and perhaps there are better ways to balance out the roster but I love dominant defenses

Brendan
Brendan

@Nick Congello  You're ignoring OL, where they're looking to bring back Howard and might go after someone like Asamoah.

j3tsfan29

So let's just get minimal talented cbs cause they are useless now that times have changed. Please stop. This is a passing league, to have revis back there means more to a defense then a great d linemen.

Brendan
Brendan

@j3tsfan29  I'll take Sheldon at $1 million over Revis at $16 million.

j3tsfan29
j3tsfan29

I'm not. Your comment said "lockdown cbs are hard to find so you pay a premium to keep them." Except we did the exact opposite and shipped our lock down cb out of town. It worked out but I'd take revis over boss Hogg at this point in their careers.

Brendan
Brendan

@j3tsfan29  Are you actually complaining about this? I think it's obvious that Idzik was never, ever going to put up with Revis' nonsense. He turned him into the DROY. Win.

Bent

@__fense @Bent @jimjets  Financially yes, but they'd never put that many resources into the CB position after releasing Revis because he wanted too much money.  They have other needs to fill.

@__fense Cro's was due Thursday by 4pm, Mark's is due the 25th.
