Manish Mehta reports via twitter that things are still not looking good for Santonio Holmes:
Bent, TheJetsBlog.comOur own Jake Steinberg was at Holmes’ event this afternoon, where Holmes told the assembled media that he is taking things “day by day” but wouldn’t say whether he’ll be ready for week one. While Holmes reportedly still does not appear completely comfortable, he was not wearing any kind of protective boot, although he did have a compression sleeve on his leg.
If Holmes is placed on the active PUP list when camp opens, that will mean that he can be activated at any time, but he will continue to count against the 90-man roster limit. It’s only once a player goes onto the reserve PUP list that they no longer use up a roster spot, but at that point you are committed to the player not being available until week six of the regular season at the earliest.
It should probably be noted that no official announcement or decision has been made, so Mehta may just be making an informed assumption when he states that Holmes will go on the PUP list, but that is looking increasingly likely. Still, it’s not necessarily the end of the world – LaRon Landry and Demario Davis opened last year on the PUP list and both played 16 games.
