OLB Antwan Barnes to return to field in July?

Jets outside linebacker Antwan Barnes said he “probably” expects to be back on the practice field by the beginning of training camp.

“I’m feeling great, continuing to get stronger,” Barnes said (Metro New York, June 8). “I’m getting there. It does feel better, it really does. I feel it getting stronger. I’m probably past 70 percent at this point. I think it will continue to get better and continue to not just heal, but get stronger.”

Barnes is recovering from an ACL tear that occurred during Week 5 of the 2013 season.  Prior to his injury Barnes was playing roughly 40% of the team’s snaps as a situational pass-rusher.

Barnes feels optimistic, but will abide by whatever timing the Jets medical staff tells him.

“I will let the trainers and the medical staff handle all that. I don’t put put timetables [on injuries], I just want to do work,” Barnes said. “But everyday I’m feeling better and I feel progress. It’s good. You don’t want to push too hard, hurry back too fast. Then you get hurt again and that doesn’t help this team.”

Bassett: There’s depth at OLB if you are looking in the right place (TJB, June 7)

Brian Bassett, TheJetsBlog.com

The Jets could certainly use more veteran experience and depth at the linebacker spot.  Last season in just four full games Barnes hurried (5), hit (4) or sacked (2) the quarterback at least once in each contest.  The presence of Antwan Barnes was definitely felt by opposing offensive lines and quarterbacks.  Getting him back and healthy could be a big help to the Jets defense, but after drafting two players at OLB in IK Enemkpali and Trevor Reilly it could be a numbers game for Barnes.

Head coach Rex Ryan knows Barnes very well from their days together in Baltimore, so expect Ryan to do everything he can to keep the skilled situational pass-rusher on the Jets roster.

Can we get a re-up of the "moving picture thing" (yes, I forgot what it's called. big deal, wanna fight about it? lol) of Barnes jumping over the OL and forcing the qb to throw the ball away immediately?

At this point Barnes = Tease

Barnes = Beast

Looking forward to his return

When are we trading Stephen Hill for Andre Johnson? Maybe the Texans will pick up some of that salary to rid themselves of a headache! Maybe the Jets can sell Houston on the idea that Hill is young and talented.....(just not productive)

So it is time for the Rangers to finish strong and take down the Kings!

Garden needs to really ROCK tonight!

With the DL occupying the OL and getting consistent penetration, now's the time for the DPR, whoever it is, to get in the teens in sacks.  A healthy Barnes would flourish, but if not him, the rookies, Coples and/or Guy McIntyre could all step up.  A beast DPR is the missing link from a good defense to an elite defense.

Do the Jets keep Barnes if he hasn't been able to show his previous speed and ability? For example if he is only 85% during training camp will the team just keep a Cunningham or one of the draft picks instead?  That was my thought last week but now I'm leaning the other way.

Who would typically come out when Barnes comes in? Pace?

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on SportsCenter Monday that the "feeling around the league" is the Texans will not try to trade Andre Johnson.

Johnson recently expressed displeasure with the Texans' latest rebuild. Rookie coach Bill O'Brien is already working to appease Johnson, likely pointing to Houston's revamped defense and what should be a much-improved run game with Arian Foster back. The Texans play in the NFL's worst division and can be competitive. They just won't contend for Super Bowls until they find a quarterback. Johnson is most likely to stay in Houston for his age-33 season.  May 19 - 9:44 AM

@SackDance99

McIntyre is 30 years old, I don't think we're gonna see much more than what we've gotten from him in the past which is inconsistent play.

If Coples doesn't do it, not sure who will............

That's a forward pass if I've ever seen one.  Not to mention the illegal contact. I think Barnes got a three game suspension for that.

@BDarc23 What Bent said.

Antwan Barnes has enough of a resume of top-shelf production from the DPR role (including here in Green and White just last year) that I'd be extremely surprised if the team just decided to say "Well, you're not 100% on Week 1, so we're dumping you and rolling with Jermaine Cunningham and Ikemefuna Enemkpali".

I'm sure they like Cunningham and Enemkpali a lot, but they're still just "maybes".  Barnes is legit.  He'll be given every opportunity to get healthy enough to play this year, including carrying him on the PUP or putting him on IR with a designation to return if necessary.

Rex and DT know how great Barnes is at what he does, and it would take a combination of a setback/reaggravation  of his injury come September + just amazing, stellar, lights out "OMG WHERE DID THIS GUY COME FROM?!?!?" play in the preseason games from both Cunningham and Enemkpali for Barnes's spot to be in much jeopardy.

@BDarc23

Goodson is still on the roster and the guy had all of 7 rushing attempts last year, due to either being in jail or being injured.  Barnes would probably have to perform a forced abortion on Michelle Duggar to get cut.  There's just not that much talent floating around out there.

@BDarc23 I don't see them cutting someone who always produces when healthy just because he isn't quite healthy yet for someone who hasn't proven they can be productive in that role which makes up just about everyone else.

Bent

@BDarc23 Yes.  Barnes and Coples were on the outside in the nickel package.

@Mathew Pelc I don't think it's likely but if he was cut, there would be a saving but less than $1m.

The only possibility I can see of him being cut is if he's still injured, in which case I'm not certain that his salary won't be guaranteed for injury, thereby negating any potential saving.

NO cutting Barnes! In fact I want to give him a raise!  So Mathew how much money do you have in your wallet?

@bob Still smarting over Chrome here. Despite the hoopla over coward shooters, trades say the horse got a quarter crack early in the race. If true, that would explain the outcome to me more than anything else.  Sort of like Barnes trying to compete with a bad wheel.

@tsjc68

I've been saying that since the Andre Johnson rumors started.....

SackDance99
SackDance99

@a57se @SackDance99  James Harrison had his first decent sack season at 29 and he had played in the NFL for 4 years before his breakout season.  McIntyre is entering his 4th NFL season.  It's not impossible for him to be a late bloomer......

Also, I said "Guy" but meant Garrett, not the old utility OL.

BDarc23

@tsjc68 @BDarc23 The only reason it's not the slam dunk you are making it out to be is that the injury is so serious. Barnes at 100% may not be nearly as good after major knee surgery.

The fix was in on that race.  They had Chrome so drugged out on Ketamine, I'm surprised he finished at all.  Belmont doesn't care about a triple crown winner; it cares about taking money out of people's wallets.  And I say this as a guy who put $50k on Tonalist.

Well, the typical injury parlance of "Barnes at 100%" would imply that he made it all the way back to pre-injury levels, but I think what you mean is that "Barnes may never make it all the way back to 100% again", and that he'll always be somewhat compromised post-injury.

And that's possible, yes.

The "slam dunk" aspect of it is, IMHO, Barnes is valued enough as a player by Rex and DT that the deadline for them to make a decision on Barnes likely isn't Week 1, it's next March (as in, they'll wait all year).  I think they'll wait on Barnes to get healthy enough to be near-100% all summer, and if he's not healthy by then, they'll carry him on PUP or IR-DFR to give him more time to get near-100%, and if he only ever gets back to 70% or 80% or 90%, they'll evaluate him then (in a PUP/IR-DFR capacity) and keep kicking the can down the road giving him more time to get strong and quick and as close too 100% as he can.

There's some guys Rex would be extremely patient with, and Barnes strikes me as one of those guys.  Ever since he left Barnes behind in Baltimore, Rex has been trying to get him back.

@tsjc68 @BDarc23 100% of a player's ability in 2014 is not always equal to 100% of the players ability in previous years.  You can get back to 100% health but not be as good a player.

This is a semantics disagreement and not worth belaboring.  I know what you're saying and you know what I'm saying, (and we're in agreement about it), we're just using different nomenclature to describe it.  Whatevs.

@ganggrncap @Ceifus Hornswoggle You think the Jets were unaware of Vick's past because of an insufficient screening process?  What's their screening process - put a bucket over your head for ten years and then sign the top fantasy players from five years ago?

And I wasn't "trying to make myself sound right", I was stating (in both comments) that both Bdarc and I are saying the same thing (just in different ways) and that BDarc is right in saying that Barnes may never be the same again.

But, as always, Hank is being Hank.

Q: Where in "all the way back" do you read that as being a "possibility" of not coming back 100%?

A: How about in the VERY F@#$ING NEXT CLAUSE OF THAT SENTENCE, HANK, where I said

"but I think what you mean is that "Barnes may never make it all the way back to 100% again", and that he'll always be somewhat compromised post-injury."

Nice try, though, Hanker.
